Rebar Locators

Rebar Locators Designed specifically to identify the location and orientation of reinforcement bars and other below surface metal objects. Locating steel reinforcement bars and metal pipes is essential in the construction and maintenance of structures. Damage caused when a drill or a fastener makes contact with a pipe is costly. A drill making contact with rebar, however, not only destroys the drill bit but also can seriously weaken the rebar, leading to serious structural damage. Before carrying out any maintenance work, it is vital to identify the location, orientation and depth of sub-surface metalwork.

The Elcometer Protovale 100 is a robust and economical gauge designed to identify the location and orientation of metal reinforcement bars, gas and water pipes.

Mild steel and stainless steel galvanised wall ties can also be found with the addition of an optional Search Coil (or probe).

Simple to use, the Elcometer Protovale 100 is supplied in an ABS plastic carry case, together with a 100mm (4”) search coil and batteries.

• Fast and accurate - gives a loud audible signal when the exact location of the rebar has been found.

• Directional Search field - distinguishes between horizontal and vertical bars – see diagram.

• No need to re-zero - Unaffected by moisture, temperature changes and electrical interference.

Rebar Locators

The Elcometer Protovale 120 Rebar Locator, is perhaps the easiest and fastest way of detecting reinforcing bars in concrete.

Widely used before coring or drilling holes to find “safe spots”, the Elcometer Protovale 120 will not only indicate the rebar’s location and direction but also will give an indication of the depth of concrete cover.

Available in both metric and imperial versions, the Elcometer Protovale 120 is supplied together with a 100mm (4”) search coil, leather case and batteries.

• Fast, accurate and stable - A loud audio tone and a clear analogue meter for quick accurate scanning.

• Focussed search field - The Elcometer Protovale 120 is accurate even when working at close rebar centres, or near metal objects such as scaffolding or metal window frames.

• Highly directional detection field - The Elcometer Protovale 120 rebar locator can distinguish between horizontal and vertical bars.

• Headphone socket – Clearly detect the rebar in noisy environments.

Identification and Orientation of the bar

The Elcometer Protovale 120 can distinguish between horizontal and vertical bars.

After locating the steel reinforcement bars in the concrete, rotate the rebar locator’s search coil (probe) until the maximum and minimum signals are found.

The maximum signal indicates the bar is running parallel to the search coil’s handle, the minimum signal indicates that the bar is running at 90° to the search coil’s handle – see diagram.

Concrete Covermeters Locating steel reinforcement bars and metal pipes is essential in the construction and maintenance of structures. Damage caused when a drill or a fastener makes contact with a pipe is costly. A drill making contact with rebar or tendon ducts, however, not only destroys the drill bit but also can lead to serious structural damage. Before carrying out any maintenance work, it is vital to identify the location, orientation and depth of sub-surface metalwork. Elcometer has three covermeters in their range, these are listed below.

This simple to use gauge quickly and accurately locates, orientates and measures the depth of cover over reinforcement bars. Designed to meet IP65 this rugged waterproof gauge, supplied with a backlight as standard, can be used in the harshest of environments. Measuring concrete cover thickness with unparalleled accuracy the Elcometer Protovale 331 Model B is an entry level gauge for users who simply want to identify and measure the depth of the rebar.

ELCOMETER PROTOVALE BOREHOLE PROBE

The range of Protovale by Elcometer Concrete Covermeters are unequalled at finding the precise location and orientation of the first layers of reinforcing bars (rebars) with the transverse bar tied to it.

No covermeter will find subsequent layers of steel reinforcement deep within the concrete. Nor can they locate pre-stressing or post tensioning tendons underneath the top reinforcement. When the Elcometer Borehole Probe is connected to the Elcometer Protovale 331 the user can now locate rebar and tendon ducts at greater depths than any other covermeter on the market today.

• Reduce unnecessary boreholes - Significantly reduces abortive drilling that not only costs both time and money but also weakens structural integrity.

• Protect drills and reinforcement - The Probe warns you before you hit metal, reducing damage to drills, tendons and rebars.

• Drill holes faster and more safely - Drill with confidence knowing that you’re safe from hitting metal in the concrete over a measured distance

• Install anodes accurately - Use the Probe to install anodes at the correct distance from steel reinforcement.

• Directional location field - Rocker switch on probe head allows fast, easy change between forwards or sideways detection

• Measures depth of hole - The probe shaft is calibrated to measure depth drilled.

The 'easy' solution for finding tendon ducts and 'hidden' layers of rebar using a simple and reliable detection method.

Using the Elcometer Protovale 331 Covermeter, identify an area between the first layers of rebar - allowing you to drill a hole with a large enough diameter to fit the shaft of the Elcometer Borehole Probe.

The Elcometer Borehole Probe is then carefully pushed into the hole and information about the 'hidden' reinforcement, either (a) to the side of, or (b) in front of, the end of the probe, can be determined - see diagram. By rotating the probe and selecting the forwards or sideways sensing mode, reinforcement lying below the first layer of rebar can be quickly located.

By increasing the depth of the hole (if possible), and re-inserting the probe as necessary, the operator can quickly find steel rebars or tendon ducts deep within the concrete.

Concrete Test Hammers

Concrete Test Hammers

Test hammers are used to determine the surface hardness of concrete and are one of the most widely used instruments in the field of non destructive testing (NDT) of concrete compressive strength. It is the quickest, simplest and least expensive method to obtain an estimate of the quality and strength of the concrete.

Both mechanical and digital test hammers are available. This simple to use gauge consists of a spring loaded plunger which, when released, strikes the surface with fixed and constant impact energy. During the rebound stroke, the mass moves a pointer that indicates the maximum point of return and at the same time indicates a reference value called Rebound Number. This number, converted by the correlations available on the hammer, gives the compression resistance value in respect of the impact angle.

• Impact Energy 2.207 Nm • Supplied with abrasive stone to prepare test surface • Aluminium body • Rebound value indicated on test hammer • Rebound value chart on body, for quick calculation of compressive strength • Curve selection on chart dependant on testing angle

The concrete hammer is supplied with plastic carrying case, grinding stone and instructions.

Concrete Compression Testing

Concrete Compression Testing

The strength of the concrete is key in the construction process. The compressive strength of concretes and cements used in a structure are specified and carefully monitored. In order to control the quality of the mix, cubic or cylindrical concrete test samples are made and their compressive strength is tested by applying load. The Elcometer 190 Quick Beton® is an innovative, low cost, accurate cube mould for use in concrete compression and quality testing. Until now, in order to meet the stringent requirements of UNI EN 12390-1:2002, moulds have usually been solid metal castings – making test sample removal very difficult. This lightweight (800g, 1.76lb) mould is designed to allow samples to be removed with minimal effort. Two modular, identical half-shells are brought together and two side-clips are fixed into place in order to prevent them accidentally separating when the cement mix is poured in. The Elcometer 190 standardised cube mould is manufactured out of rigid plastic and generates precise cubic test samples of 150mm (5.9”) dimensions.

• Easy to assemble and breakdown - you do not need any tools for mounting the mould, no compressed air or chemical products to extract the sample – simply slide the side-clips away and remove the concrete cube.

• Cost & time saving - as the concrete sample manufactured with the Elcometer 190 has all the geometrical and physical specifications required to comply with the dimensional tolerances specified by UNI EN 12390-1:2002, there is no need to grind the surface of the cubes to get the end faces flat and parallel.

• A fully recyclable product - can be re-used at least 15 times • Immediate mould marking - print your test reference information on the

cube (concrete manufacturer, project name, etc.) – as early as immediately after pouring.

Each Elcometer 190 is supplied in a kit which contains 6 moulds, 6 side-clip pairs and 2 tamping rods.

Adhesion & Bond Strength

Adhesion & Bond Strength

Adhesion gauges are essentially used to determine the bond strength between two layers. In this way, these easy to use gauges are ideal for measuring a wide range of applications, which include concrete structural repairs as well as other types of coating adhesion on concrete - such as paint, cement, wall plaster, etc. The basic principle of all the Elcometer Adhesion Gauges is as follows: a test dolly is glued to the surface and, once cured, pulled off. The tensile force required to remove the test dolly together with the coating is measured by the gauge. The Elcometer 106 adhesion testers have been specifically designed to measure paint on concrete, but can also be used to measure the bond strength of structural repairs.

Once the dolly has been adhered to the surface, the Elcometer 106 gauge is simply positioned over the dolly and a load applied using the handle. As the handle is rotated, the force applied increases and the scale on the side of the gauge indicates the force applied. Each gauge is supplied in a carrying case together with either 20mm (0.78”) or 50mm (2”) dollies – dependant on model version.

Salt Contamination

At a glance • Fast field test for measuring the

concentration of chlorides in concrete.

• Generate depth/concentration profiles of your concrete structure.

At a glance • Simple low cost test for field testing of Chloride Ions in Water. • No laboratory test required.

Salt Contamination

Structures located near the sea, or in countries where freezing conditions occur, are prone to chloride or salt contamination issues. Moist sea air, or salty water created from de-icing programs on road surfaces, can be absorbed by the porous concrete. Even when the moisture evaporates, the salt remains in the concrete – potentially increasing the risk of accelerated corrosion of the steel rebar.

Chlorides deposited on a concrete surface, either during gritting or salting of roads during freezing conditions or due to moist salty sea air, can be absorbed into the concrete.

As the water evaporates, the soluble salt is deposited and remains within the concrete structure. As more water is absorbed into the concrete structure, the level of salt contamination, together with the penetration depth, increases and may eventually reach the layers of rebar, increasing the rate of corrosion.

The Elcometer 134A is an easy to use, fast and accurate field test which allows you to determine the concentration of chloride ions of your structure and help you create a depth/concentration profile of the concrete. Simply drill a hole into the concrete and collect the required amount of waste material and pour in the test solution. Insert the titration tube and record the chloride concentration. By removing samples at known depths and recording the result, you can quickly generate a profile of the chloride concentration at different depths.

When mixing concrete it is important to monitor the level of chloride in the water. The Elcometer 134W Salt Detection Kit for Water is a simple to use, field test, which gives you an accurate value for the chloride content in the water. Simply pour a water sample into the box and test with the titration tube. The colour change indicates the chloride concentration.

Surface Roughness

Surface Roughness Measuring the surface roughness of concrete is essential in many areas, in particular in areas where a non-slip coating is required.

If the concrete profile is too low, there is a higher risk of skidding, if the profile is too high, the customer may view it as a poor surface finish.

This is an easy to use gauge that measures the point-to-valley height of a concrete surface.

The average of a series of measurements provides an indication of the surface roughness and allows the surfaces to be compared as polishing and inspection proceeds.

The Elcometer 225 Profile Putty Kit is an easy-to-use system which provides a permanent replica of the surface profile of concrete and other materials. A mould is used to force a two-part putty onto the concrete surface. When the putty has set, it is peeled of the concrete; the profile of the surface of the concrete is permanently recorded in the putty. The putty replica may then be visually compared to standards or analysed to provide quantative measurement of surface profile.
