Indy) was humanely euthanized Sunday evening at the Hagyard-Davidson-McGee Veterinary Clinic in Lexington after developing colitis and laminitis. The Godolphin colorbearer, who was being pre- pared for the GI Kentucky Oaks, came down with a fever Friday and was sent to the clinic Satur- day. “It is hard to believe, but her condition went so bad in 24 hours they couldn’t do anything to help her,” Tom Albertrani, as- sistant to trainer Saeed bin Suroor, said. The winner of the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies and GII Sorrento S. at two, Tem- pera had started twice this sea- son, finishing second in both the UAE 1000 Guineas and the UAE Oaks. In all, the dark bay had three wins, two seconds and two thirds from her seven career starts for earnings of $770,240. Trainer Eoin Harty, who guided the filly through her juvenile campaign, said, “I am devastated. One minute I thought she had a temperature and would miss the Oaks and here it is 48 hours later and she’s dead. It’s all very sudden. She was the horse that put the [Godolphin] two- year-old program on the map and showed the world what Sheikh Mo- hammed’s goals are with his two-year-olds. She’s the one that did it for us; she was a very special filly.” Simon Crisford, racing manager for Godolphin, added, “It’s a tragic loss, it’s so sad that her life was so short. What a brilliant filly she was when she won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies...it was one of the greatest moments for Godolphin with the 1-2 in that race. She was a very sweet-natured filly and she’s going to be a great loss to the stud and Sheikh Mohammed’s broodmare band.” Top Contenders Get Their Finals Works: GI Santa Anita Derby winner Came Home (Gone West) had his final Ken- tucky Derby prep yester- day morning, going five furlongs in 1:00.60 under jockey Chris McCarron. The once-beaten colt gal- loped out six furlongs in 1:13.20. “He went very well,” McCarron said. “He felt good going across the ground. He showed us good signs. This is a determined colt with a lot of try in him.” Also stretching his legs under the Twin Spires yester- day, Medaglia d’Oro (El Prado {Ire}) went six furlongs in 1:13.80 after cruising through splits of :24, :36, :48.60 and 1:01.60. The dark bay galloped out seven-eighths in 1:28.20. Jockey Marco Ramirez, aboard the Bobby Frankel trainee for the move, said, “He felt good--he likes this track.” Trainer Steve Asmussen sent his Derby duo, GII Arkansas Derby hero Private Emblem (Our Emblem) and Windward Passage (Captain Bodgit), who dead-heated for third in the race, out for workouts yesterday. Wind- ward Passage went a half in :48.60, galloping out five- eigths in 1:02.40. A half hour later, his stablemate went the same distance in :48.80, but galloped out in a sprightly 1:01.80. “I’m pleased with the way they are getting over the track,” Asmussen said. “Both horses are handling their surrpundings. In his last work, Private Emblem was noticing things in the infield and not really paying attention. Since then, he’s acted like he knows where he’s going.” Saarland (Unbridled), fully recovered from minor throat surgery, worked five furlongs in 1:02, dashing through the final eighth in :11 and change before gal- loping out six furlongs in 1:15.60. Derby Works cont.

Proud Citizen (Gone West), winner of the GIICoolmore Lexington S. last time out, zipped five fur-longs in :58.80 when the Churchill strip first openedyesterday morning. “He looked fine and everythingwent smooth,” trainer D. Wayne Lukas said...SantaAnita Derby runner-up Easy Grades (Honor Grades),working after the break, went five-eighths in 1:01.40.Jockey Jorge Chavez, who rode Monarchos to victoryin Derby 127, was in the irons...Lusty Latin (El Prado{Ire}) also went five panels, going the distance in 1:01.“I let him do his own thing early and then, turning forhome, I kind of clucked to him and let him stretch onout down the lane and he finished up real well,” jockeyGlenn Corbett said...Blue Burner (French Deputy)clicked off his five furlongs in a shap :59 flat. “I wantedto put a decent work into him and I got what Iwanted,” trainer Bill Mott said...Sunday Break (Jpn)(Forty Niner), third in the GI Wood Memorial last timeand still hoping for a Derby berth, went six furlongs in1:14.40. “He was spot on,” trainer Neil Drysdale said.

Take the Cake Drills for Oaks: Take the Cake (Fly So Free), third in the GI AshlandS. last time out, worked five furlongs in 1:01.60 yester-day at Churchill Downs as her final prep for Friday’s GIKentucky Oaks. “She’s ready,” trainer Carl Nafzgersaid. “She came off the track looking great, just theway she’s supposed to.” Nafzger is still undecided as towhether to run Belterra (Unbridled) in the Oaks. The fillyunderwent throat surgery Apr. 8. “The question I keepasking myself is if she’s 110-percent fit, which youhave to be to run in the Oaks,” he said. “If she’s notcompletely ready, a race like that could set her back sixor eight weeks. I’d love to go, but I don’t know rightnow.”

Equality Breezes at Delaware Park: He won’t be running in the Kentucky Derby, butEquality (Mt. Livermore), a possible for the May 18 GIPreakness S., worked five furlongs in 1:00.80 at Dela-ware Park yesterday morning. The three-year-old, win-ner of the GIII Tampa Bay Derby, comes off a second-place finish in the Apr. 6 Aventura S. at GulfstreamPark. “I thought his work went super,” trainer GrahamMotion said. Explaining why he is waiting for the sec-ond leg of the Triple Crown, Motion said, “The Derby isprobably the toughest race in the world to win. We alsofelt he might not be quite ready at this time. ThePreakness will give him a little more time and it is notquite such a mad house.”

Ballydoyle Duo Fly Out: Johannesburg (Hennessy) and Castle Gandolfo (GoneWest) fly out to Keeneland today to begin their quaran-tine ahead of their GI Kentucky Derby bids at ChurchillDowns on Saturday. Jockey arrangements have yet tobe announced for the pair, although Jerry Bailey andGary Stevens were named by O’Brien yesterday, as hetold the Racing Post, “Jerry Bailey will ride one andGary Stevens is a possible for the other, but we haven’tyet decided who will ride which.”

Comfy Withdrawn from Guineas: Sir Michael Stoute’s Comfy (Lear Fan) was the mostnotable withdrawal from Saturday’s G1 Sagitta 2000Guineas S. at Newmarket at the five-day entry stageyesterday. The absence of Listed Acomb S. winnerComfy, quoted at 20-1 by Coral Eurobet before beingtaken out of the mile Classic, as well as the HenryCecil-trained Western Verse (Gone West)--also with-drawn yesterday--means that Khalid Abdullah will bewithout a runner in either of the two Classics. Alsopulled out at yesterday’s confirmation stage was RogerCharlton’s Tikkun (Ire) (Grand Lodge), leaving a list of29 colts still engaged in the £300,000 contest. AidanO’Brien is responsible for nine of those, including the 6-4 ante-post favourite Hawk Wing (Woodman), and heis likely to confirm jockey arrangements mid-week.Godolphin have left in four colts, headed by Naheef (Ire)(Marju {Ire}), but have withdrawn long-time doubtfulDubai Destination (Kingmambo). In the fillies’ equivalent23 remain, but Richard Gibson has taken out Danseused’Etoile (Fr) (Highest Honor {Fr}), while Pascal Bary hasleft in Glia (A.P. Indy), although she is more likely tostay at home for the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches(French 1000 Guineas) at Longchamp May 12. Classic Corner cont. p3

During the first two years of the ‘noughties,’ therewere plenty of Grade I winners in the U.S. and Europewhich were inbred within the first four generations toNorthern Dancer. There were also several inbred to Hailto Reason, among others, and even two with two linesof Caro. Bearing in mind how deeply Raise a Native’s bloodpermeates the American stud book, one might alsohave expected his name to be duplicated in the pedi-grees of a significant number of this period’s majorwinners. Surprisingly, though, there were only twoinbred to this tremendous stallion, who founded a dy-nasty through the likes of Alydar, Exclusive Native,Majestic Prince and Mr. Prospector. Maybe it is theunsoundness which is almost synonymous with Raise aNative’s name--or the fear of this unsoundness--whichhas limited the number of major winners bred this way. I should quickly add that one of the two recent GradeI winners inbred to Raise a Native was none other thanthe outstanding Point Given, and that the previousGrade I winners inbred to him include champions RealQuiet and Anees. This type of mating can clearly payenormous dividends, an excellent recent example beingProper Gamble, who improved her record to five winsand a second from seven starts when she narrowlylanded the GII Stonerside Beaumont S. This daughter ofProspectors Gamble is inbred 4x3 to Raise a Native.

What is especially noteworthy about Proper Gamble’spedigree is that it also contains 4x3 inbreeding to InReality. In Reality also appears in the pedigrees of RealQuiet (through Believe It), Point Given (through Re-launch) and Anees. Could it be that the toughness of InReality--a horse who reached the first two in 23 of his27 starts--helps stabilize the brilliance of Raise a Native, who burnt out after only four starts? Of course, the Raise a Native male line has long en-joyed a fruitful relationship with mares with In Realityblood. Good examples are that admirable stallion CraftyProspector and the Belmont S. hero Commendable, both sons of In Reality mares, while Unbridled andChester House both have In Reality mares as their sec-ond dam. Winning a Grade II has to be considered a consider-able achievement for Proper Gamble, who appeared inBook 7 as Hip 4605 of the sale’s 4650 yearlings, atKeeneland’s September Sale in 2000. Proper Gamblemust have done well after being bought for $20,000 asa weanling because her price rose to $80,000--morethan three times the next-best price of $25,000 paidfor a Prospectors Gamble yearling that year. The incentive to send her dam Bare It Properly toCrafty Prospector’s son Prospectors Gamble in 1998possibly owed something to the success enjoyed in1997 by Crafty Prospector’s son Crafty Friend. Thisaccomplished miler is inbred 3x3 to Raise a Native. Prospectors Gamble is now a resident of Wafare Farmin Kentucky, but he began his stallion career in 1991 inFlorida, where he quickly established his ability to sireplenty of juvenile winners. He earned promotion to theKentucky league by the summer of 1995, moving firstto Pin Oak Stud. Whether he has justified the move toKentucky is open to question. His only American gradedwinner prior to Proper Gamble was Bevo, one of the topjuveniles of 1999, but his record has to be consideredrespectable for a Grade II winner whose best figure onthe Blood-Horse Free Handicaps was the 113 he re-ceived at three and five years.Pedigree Insights cont. p6

Needless to say, the mares sent to Prospectors Gam-ble will not have been of the highest quality, ProperGamble’s dam being a good example. A $6,000 year-ling, Bare It Properly won only four small races, but shehas some notable relatives. Tribal Hill, a half-sister toBare It Properly, produced that good filly Aztec Hill, andProper Gamble’s second dam, Cypress Bearer, was ahalf-sister to the high-class Pine Circle. As her fourthdam is Classicist, Proper Gamble comes from the samefamily as Danzig Connection.

Sires of G1/G2 Winners k

www.claibornefarm.com

TOP OF THE CLASSby Bill Oppenheim What's the ultimate class measurement of sire suc-cess? The commercial marketplace tells us which stal-lions command six-figure stud fees and seven-figureyearlings, but there has never been a defining statistic--one number--which we can look at and say, this is howgood a sire is, and here is where he ranks among thetop sires. Progeny earnings in a year, or season, has alwaysbeen the most popular standard, and topping one ofthose lists makes a horse the Champion Sire in thatcountry, in that year--so, Bold Ruler was Champion Sireeight times in North America, Sadler's Wells has been11 times champion sire in Britain and Ireland, etc. Thecumulative average-earnings index has its adherents, too, and Marketwatch newsletter introduced an inter-esting variation on that statistic in its February 28edition which does succeed in refining that rating. This TDN Special Edition sees the introduction of anew sire rating statistic: an index of 'real-world' Gr. 1and Gr. 2 winners/foals, based on racing of 1983-2001. Let's abbreviate that as G1/2 Index, and I needto just explain a couple of things about the statistic, and how it was derived, before revealing all. The statistic was generated under the direction ofStew Winstandley of The Jockey Club InformationSystems. I almost said "the long-suffering StewWinstandley," because for about 15 years now, everytime I call up with a new brainstorm, Stew threatens toretire. TJCIS performs an invaluable service, at least inmy opinion, because their database and expertise atmanaging it enables people like me to ask questionsthat couldn't have been answered 20 years ago. Sotheir information provided the starting point. To make a long story shorter, they generated a list of

Gr. 1 and Gr. 2 winners since 1983, according to thecataloguing standards accepted by the industry. Thosewho have followed my work in stallion statistics overthe years will be familiar with my contention thatachieving accuracy for the objective of practical applica-tion usually means limiting the population in some way. Again I have done this, by throwing outabout 20% of the Gr. 1 and Gr. 2 winners recognizedby the industry. Over the years various countries--Peruand Panama are two examples--have had races recog-nized as being of the highest possible standard, whenthey patently are not. My revision of TJCIS' list com-prises 4,080 individual horses who won Gr. 1 or Gr. 2races from 1983-2001 in North America, Great Britain,Ireland, France, Germany, Italy, and, very recently,Hong Kong and the UAE. Japan is unfortunately notincluded, and all I can say is don't blame me, talk to thecataloguing standards committee. Some might argue that an 'ultimate class measure-ment' should be based only on Gr. 1 winners. Aftermuch deliberation, I think not, and that's why Gr. 2winners (in the right places) are included in this indexstatistic. Three reasons: one, the sample of Gr. 1 win-ners is too small for sire statistics based on them to bereally meaningful; two, because some Gr. 2 racesshould be Gr. 1, and vice versa; and three, my analysissuggests Gr. 2 winners are markedly better than eitherGr. 3 winners, or Gr. 1-placed horses. My argument isthat, both statistically and practically, measuring Gr. 1and Gr. 2 winners is the best available pointer to high-class sires. Finally, why have we indexed the measurementrather than simply list sires' 1983-2001 percentage ofG1/2 winners to foals? The answer again has to dowith practical application, in two ways. To relate thestatistic to currently active sires, I found that the per-

centage for 1,150 sires who had APEX ratings (as longas the majority of their foals aren't in Japan, as noted above) is 0.82% G1/2 winners to foals (coveringracing 1983-2001). In other words, for the 1,150 siresselected as a representative sample group, about 1 ofevery 122 foals is a G1/2 winner. There are 403 of the1,150 who have sired a G1/2 winner: for those sires, the G1/2 Index is their percentage of G1/2 winners, divided by 0.82. This enables us to truly assess the sirerelative to his contemporaries, and has the added bene-fit of enabling comparisons with the APEX indices, which also involve class gradations, though based onearnings, and covering the period 1995-2001 ratherthan 1983-2001.

DANZIG TOPS THE CHARTS That's the theory; then what do we learn in practice? The tables on the following pages list the top 50 sireson G1/2 Index, then all 403 sires who had both APEXratings 1995-2001, and had sired a G 1/2 winner since1983. Danzig tops the charts with an 8.20 G1/2 Index, which is 6.72% of his foals. He is one of eight sireswith a G1/2 Index of 5.00+. The top 10, as you cansee from the accompanying table, are:

1. Danzig - 8.20 2. Mr. Prospector - 7.853. Sadler's Wells - 7.554. Nureyev - 7.375. Storm Cat - 6.126. Rainbow Quest - 5.307. Seattle Slew - 5.208. A.P. Indy - 5.029. El Gran Senor - 4.8510. Seeking the Gold - 4.72

I would just add that, for each sire, you will see sixcolumns of index figures. The four indices to the leftrepresent class gradations, while the two right-handcolumns are percentages of the two highest class gra-dations, A Runners and G1/2 winners. The G1/2 Index, and those two right-hand percentage figures, are basedon racing from 1983-2001. The three left-hand indices--C, B, and A indices--are based on racing 1995-2001.Nonetheless, indexing the scales does give us someidea about a sire's performance as you go up the classladder.

GODOLPHIN ARRIVALS Godolphin flew in a selection of their horses to theirNewmarket base of Moulton Paddocks yesterday.Trainer Saeed bin Suroor was on hand to oversee thearrival of a core of 60 horses set for a European cam-paign. Among them were Naheef (Ire) (Marju {Ire}) andMeshaheer (USA) (Nureyev {USA}), the operation’smain hopes for Saturday’s G1 Sagitta 2000 Guineas atNewmarket; and Kazzia (Ger) (Zinaad {GB}), who maycontest the fillies’ equivalent a day later. Suroor toldGulf News online: “I’m really excited about the newinternational season. Every year presents a new chal-lenge. But we have been preparing for this all throughthe winter and we’re ready to challenge for the bestraces. This year we have a big chance with Naheef. Helooks like a Guineas horse and he’s done everythingright over the winter including winning his trial at NadAl Sheba. We might run Meshaheer as well, but we willdecide later this week.” Moon Ballad (Ire) (Singspiel{Ire}), fourth in the G2 UAE Derby at Nad al Sheba Mar.23, may be the first representative of the operation inEurope in Friday’s Listed Pearl and Coutts NewmarketS. MAY THE FIRST DEADLINE ARRIVES Tomorrow will witness the first day of broadcastingof the new attheraces TV channel, providing 14 hoursof coverage each day from 49 of Britain’s racecourses, with a series of new features. However, bookmakersare unlikely to be showing pictures or commentary inbetting shops as the issue of picture rights enters theeleventh hour. Punters may have to contend with lim-ited terrestrial coverage of racing, as well as coveragefrom the 10 GG-Media tracks, in their local bettingshops as negotiations between bookmakers’ represen-tatives and the Racecourse Association failed to con-vene yesterday. Stephen Atkin, chief executive of theRCA, is still hoping that bookmakers will agree to theirdemand of £4,000 per betting shop per year for picturerights. He told PA Sport, “We’re pretty much where wewere on Friday. We are available for meetings but thereare none planned at the moment. Nothing has changed. The RCA are here to talk, but we have not got anyplanned. I am always hopeful, but I am not over opti-mistic.” Satellite Information Services (SIS), meanwhile, announced yesterday that they will screening TRNi inbetting shops from tomorrow. American racing will beshown nightly during the summer on quieter domesticevenings.
