Matt GreeneSupplier Diversity Assistant Manager

FROM THE EDITORDuring my flight home from the 2014 NMSDC

Annual Conference, I had some time to reflect on

the exciting news and activities of the past several

months. What a busy time! That also means we have

a lot to share with you in this final TEMA Supplier

Diversity Newsletter of 2014.

In late October, Toyota hosted our 25th Annual

Toyota Opportunity Exchange (OE). I would like to

once again thank our strategic partners, esteemed

speakers and panelists, Tier I Suppliers, MBEs and

WBEs for being such an important part of the event’s

continued success. Read more about the 2014 OE

and how we celebrated this important milestone in

Toyota’s history on pg. 6.

Soon after OE, many of us were in Orlando for the

2014 NMSDC Annual Conference, which always

serves as a great time to take inventory of our

progress over the year. The conference also reminds

us of the value in continually cultivating and

nurturing relationships. You’ll find a special ‘thank

you’ message on pg. 11, recognizing the many diverse

businesses we’ve met through the event.

And we are especially thrilled to tell you about the

achievements of two valued WBE suppliers: Rosa

Santana of Forma Automotive, who recently made

history as the first Hispanic Woman to become a

Tier 1 Direct Supplier (pg. 5), and Donna Cole of Cole

Chemical & Distributing, Inc., (pg. 10), a longstanding

Toyota partner and outstanding advocate within the

Asian community.

As we close out 2014 and head into the new year,

I encourage you to remember that we each have

opportunities to be agents of change every day by

demonstrating what it means to be inclusive as we go

about our daily routines at work, at home, and in our

communities.

We’ve accomplished much together already, and

Toyota joins our diverse suppliers in looking forward

to continued success in this coming year and beyond.

Thanks for your continued commitment to excellence!

Best Regards,

Matt Greene

A SPECIAL MESSAGE TOOUR SUPPLIERS

BLAZINGTHE TRAIL:ROSA SANTANA

Jason ReidGeneral Manager,

Rosa Santana and daughters, Nicole Navarro-Velesiotis and Lisa Navarro-Gonzales, at the TMMTX facility.

Simply put, Rosa Santana is a groundbreaker.

As the first Hispanic woman to provide

vehicle content as a Toyota Tier I Supplier,

Ms. Santana is blazing the trail with her latest

venture, Forma Automotive.

Our July Supplier Diversity newsletter

featured Ms. Santana and Integrated Human

Capital in the Supplier Spotlight for her

commitment to excellence in the staffing

industry. As a Tier II Supplier, Integrated

Human Capital is among the group of

suppliers located on-site at our San Antonio

manufacturing facility.

Recently, Ms. Santana embarked on a new

journey, launching Forma Automotive. This

company will provide all parts needed to

assemble Tacoma truck beds as well as also

selling assembled beds to Toyota.

The Toyota team is thrilled to work with Ms.

Santana in this expanded capacity. “From the

beginning of our relationship, Rosa’s staffing

At our recent 25th Annual Toyota

Opportunity Exchange celebration, Simon

Nagata, TEMA President and CEO, said it best:

Toyota is always searching for new MBEs and

WBEs to help Toyota and our Toyota suppliers

add value and innovation to our products.

Building relationships with potential MBE and

WBE suppliers through our supplier diversity

processes and programs allows us to empower

diverse entrepreneurs in the communities

where Toyota designs, builds and sells

vehicles. For example, through our mentoring

services and supplier development events

such as Opportunity Exchange and Power

of Getting Connected (POGC) workshops,

we’re able to help equip and prepare diverse

businesses for long-term growth and

sustainability.

Toyota is continuously searching for

creative ways to involve MBEs and WBEs

company has been providing services to

many of our on-site suppliers in Texas,” said

Jim Holloway, TEMA Purchasing General

Manager. “Rosa has always demonstrated

initiative in developing a relationship

with Toyota not just locally in Texas, but

throughout TEMA.”

Mr. Holloway notes that TEMA recognized

that Rosa operates her business much like

Toyota — continuous improvement, respect

for people, mutual trust and mutual benefit.

“Rosa has demonstrated a willingness and

capability to expand into a space that is new

to her and, as a result, we are confident that

through strong partnership and collaboration,

this [venture] is a huge win-win.”

Forma is expected to begin trial activity for

assembling the truck beds in January 2015.

in our business through innovative

internal and external sourcing strategies.

An important aspect of that commitment

is to enhance communications, such as

this year’s reintroduced newsletter and

revamped Supplier Diversity website to keep

diverse businesses informed of upcoming

opportunities.

By helping our MBEs and WBEs become more

sustainable, they are better positioned to bring

innovation to the marketplace, to enhance

the vitality of the business community, and

to improve the future for themselves, their

families and their employees. We appreciate

our diverse suppliers for their partnership

and their continued dedication to providing

outstanding service and product excellence.

A SILVER AFFAIR:

CELEBRATINGTHE 25TH

TOYOTA OPPORTUNITY

EXCHANGE

In his rousing breakfast keynote at the 2014

Toyota Opportunity Exchange, Dr. Randal

Pinkett, Chairman and CEO of BCT Partners,

movingly stated that, “The most fundamental

building block of any successful company is

relationships.” Encouraging the hundreds of

diverse entrepreneurs and Toyota suppliers

in attendance to look back, look within, and

look ahead, Dr. Pinkett eloquently articulated

the importance of networking and building

meaningful connections – the very focal

point that has driven Toyota’s Opportunity

Exchange over the past 25 years.

Toyota proudly celebrated Opportunity

Exchange’s silver anniversary, a special

milestone that reflects an ongoing

commitment to generating tangible business

opportunities for minority- and women-

owned businesses. This year’s theme —

“Driving Results: Past, Present and Future”

— captured not only the spirit of OE’s

track record of success, but also reminded

attendees, partners, suppliers and diverse

entrepreneurs that this conference is also

about looking ahead to what’s next for Toyota

and for diversity in business.

In honor of this year’s event, please join

us in reliving two days of professional

development, networking and discovering

new business opportunities in a special recap.

Beginning with a fantastic luncheon, the

first day of the 2014 Opportunity Exchange

fittingly reflected the amazing growth,

progress and positive outcomes the event

has generated since 1990. In commemoration

of the 25th anniversary celebration, Toyota

presented a fresh look and direction at the

luncheon, including a new Opportunity

Exchange logo with the tagline, “Engage.

Learn. Grow. ”

Leading guests in invocation, the Rev. Jesse

Jackson, Sr. commenced the luncheon, and

soon, guests were reminded of the event’s

remarkable 25-year history thanks to the

firsthand experiences of Purchasing General

Manager Gene Tabor, who has attended 24

out of the 25 Toyota Opportunity Exchange

events, and Eric Ellis, President and CEO of

Integrity Development Corporation, Toyota’s

diversity consulting partner for 18 years.

After a brief break for lunch, the highly

anticipated “fireside chat” segment of the

program began. To discuss insight and ideas

on Supplier Diversity over the last 25 years,

it was an honor for Toyota to welcome back

the ever-intuitive and engaging Dr. Robert

Wallace, President & CEO, BITHGROUP

Technologies, Inc. to moderate a discussion

with three key strategic partners: Joset

Wright-Lacey, President of the National

Minority Supplier Development Council;

Javier Palomarez, President & CEO of

the United States Hispanic Chamber of

Commerce; and Pamela Prince-Eason,

President & CEO of Women’s Business

Enterprise National Council.

Throughout this informative panel, these

‘Jedis’ of Supplier Diversity, as Bob put

it, shared their thoughts on how best to

capture and prepare for the future by

anticipating and creating rather than

waiting and reacting. They also discussed

why innovation and “grit” are two of the

biggest assets of diverse businesses. Panelists

each touched on the benefits of 360-degree

strategic partnerships, and how to be small,

lean and flexible enough for continuous

improvement. Talk about an action-packed

hour!

After a brief break, conference attendees

then headed to a seminar of their choice

between two outstanding speakers in Ed

Rigaud, owner of EnovaPremier, LLC, and

Michele Ruiz, President & CEO of Ruiz

Strategies. With a focus of business growth,

Mr. Rigaud detailed how diverse businesses

can expand their business in his seminar

entitled, “An MBE Success Story: What It

Takes to Win with a Big Customer,” while

Ms. Ruiz began an encouraging dialogue

during her session, “Taking Brand &

Business To Next Level,” on how companies

can elevate their brand and business

through social media.

Attendees then joined once more for a

powerful collective group seminar session

entitled, “Succeeding in Tough Economic

Times: The Power of Importance and the

Relationships in Our Lives.” Led by the

renowned Dr. George Fraser, Chairman

and CEO of Frasernet, Inc., the seminar

reminded us all that we were born to

network. One of the most important

takeaways from Dr. Fraser’s speech was that

each of us are in the business of building

relationships – whether personal, operational

or strategic – and that there are small steps we

can take daily to not only build our networks

but to sustain them as well. Dr. Fraser also

led an honest panel discussion on Supplier

Diversity today, featuring Michael Pagliaro

of IBM, Reginald Layton of Johnson Controls

Inc., and Denise Thomas of the Kroger

Company, who provided their opinions how

Supplier Diversity can improve and expand

for future success.

In one afternoon, Opportunity Exchange

opened the eyes of suppliers, diverse business

owners, and even Toyota team members to

some new and innovative ways to consider

when growing a business. Judging by day

one alone, it was clear that attendees had a

lot to look forward to on day two at the Duke

Energy Center.

DAY 1

continued

“BUSINESS

IS ABOUT

RELATIONSHIPS

AND WITHOUT

RELATIONSHIPS

YOU HAVE NO

BUSINESS...”

Dr. George C. FraserPresident & CEO, FraserNet, Inc.

The energy from Monday undoubtedly

carried over as the second day of Opportunity

Exchange kicked off bright and early with the

breakfast program.

In support of Toyota’s ongoing commitment

to diversity and inclusion, guests were

treated to inspiring messages from Toyota.

Expressing their excitement and gratitude for

the event’s support over the past 25 years,

TEMA President and CEO Simon Nagata gave

a special Toyota message, while Latondra

Newton, Chief Corporate Social Responsibility

Officer of Toyota Motor North America

Inc, and Robert Young, Vice President

of Purchasing, shared special Diversity

and Inclusion and Purchasing messages,

respectively.

Dr. Randal Pinkett delivered a timely and

dynamic keynote for the 25th Toyota

Opportunity Exchange, entitled “Everything

You Already Know About Business

but Were Afraid to Tell: Looking Back,

Looking Within and Looking Ahead.” The

importance of partnerships, particularly

within Supplier Diversity, was intricately

threaded throughout Dr. Pinkett’s remarks

as he declared that it is who we have on our

team that is most important. Acknowledging

that “we must become more aggressive

in pursuing a new paradigm” on how we

develop relationships, Dr. Pinkett encouraged

new potential partnerships through joint

ventures, mergers, and acquisitions as

a way for minority- and women-owned

businesses to scale and turn the needle on

Supplier Diversity in the 21st century. Just

as important, Dr. Pinkett called for attendees

to “look back” by lending a helping hand

to aspiring entrepreneurs. Reminding the

audience that we all stand on the shoulder

of giants, Dr. Pinkett encouraged attendees

to keep building and striving toward earning

their professional and business endeavors.

After breakfast, the trade show began! The

sight of the expo floor filled with Toyota

Tier I Suppliers, each ready to discuss real

business opportunities with MBEs and

WBEs, is one that continues to be one of the

most remarkable parts of the event. Being

immersed into the crowd, navigating the

trade show floor and engaging in meaningful

conversations is exactly what the Toyota

Opportunity Exchange is all about.

There were several new additions to this

year’s trade show festivities. For example, an

OE Selfie Zone and Photo Booth invited guests

to capture and share their OE experience

online as they posed with new friends and

hopefully, future business partners. With just

a quick search for #ToyotaOE on social media,

it was clear that attendees couldn’t wait to

share these fun moments. There were also

four satellite Toyota areas, in addition to the

center Toyota booth, to better help MBEs and

WBEs identify Tier I Suppliers who need their

products/services.

The chance to win a one-year lease for

a Camry SE resulted in a flood of survey

entries throughout the event and generated

even more buzz on the trade show floor as

hundreds awaited the big announcement.

Tina Nowak, a sales executive with MMSDC-

certified Grand Aire, a leading provider of

on-demand freight and passenger air charter

services, walked away as a very deserving

winner. Congratulations to Tina!

From Dr. Pinkett’s dynamic keynote to one

of the most memorable and eventful trade

shows in recent memory, day two was the

perfect way to end the two-day conference

full of opportunities.

25 Years And BeyondCelebrating the 25th year of Opportunity

Exchange was truly a moment in the event’s

history that will never be forgotten. As the

event came to a close once more, it was clear

that it’s been these long-term, sustainable

relationships that have driven the success of

the event’s history and will continue to do so

for future OEs to come. Here’s to continuing

the ongoing dialogue about the importance of

diversity and inclusion in American business

and many more years of generating tangible

business opportunities for minority-owned

and woman-owned businesses.

SUPPLIER SPOTLIGHT:

DONNA COLE,COLE CHEMICAL & DISTRIBUTING, INC.

Diversity and inclusion are a top priority for

Toyota, a commitment that extends across all

aspects of our business operations. In each

issue of our quarterly newsletter, we spotlight

certified MBEs and WBEs supporting Toyota’s

success through their innovation and

expertise. Some are smaller, local companies,

others are larger, national or even global

operations, but each diverse supplier is chosen

to join our supplier base, because they share

our commitment to excellence.

In this Supplier Spotlight, we introduce you

to Donna Cole, President & CEO, of Cole

Chemicals & Distributing, Inc., and a long-

time Toyota Tier I Supplier.

In 1980, Donna Fujimoto Cole – a divorced

mother of a four-year old daughter – made

one of the biggest leaps of faith in her life,

starting Cole Chemical & Distributing, Inc.

with $5,000 from her savings.

Initially launched as a chemical trading

company, Cole Chemical & Distributing, Inc.

evolved into a global chemical supply chain

manager by providing management services

as an independent petrochemical distributor.

Ranked by ICIS Chemical Business Magazine

as one of the top 140 distributors globally,

Cole Chemical & Distributing became the first

chemical distributor to become ISO certified.

Headquartered in Houston, TX, Cole Chemical

& Distributing, Inc. is both MBE-certified with

the Houston Minority Supplier Development

Council and WBE-certified with WBEA Texas.

The Tier I Supplier’s relationship with Toyota

began years ago through a conversation

initiated by a Cole Chemical supplier at an

International Petrochemical conference. A

sustainable partnership that resulted from

that meeting ultimately led to the company’s

management of Toyota’s supply chain for

engine coolant, windshield washer fluid, and

adhesives in both the U.S. and Mexico.

One of Ms. Cole’s proudest accomplishments

is her company’s personal commitment to

ensuring the Japanese American soldiers

who served in the 100th Battalion, 442nd

Regimental Combat Team and Military

Intelligence Service in WWII receive the

Congressional Gold Medal and also be

honored through a permanent exhibit at the

Smithsonian Museum of American History

by 2016.

Such community activism exemplifies Ms.

Cole’s ethical and compassionate leadership

that has resulted in Cole Chemical &

Distributing, Inc. in becoming one of the most

successfully owned woman and minority-

owned businesses in the country and one of

Toyota’s valued strategic partners.

SPECIAL ‘THANK YOU!’ FROM THE TEMA TEAM

Toyota recently had the opportunity to join

our friends at the 2014 NMSDC Conference

and Business Opportunity Fair in Orlando,

Florida.

Each year, the NMSDC Conference provides

us with a venue to create and cultivate

meaningful business relationships that quite

often result in tangible business opportunities.

At the conference, Toyota had the

opportunity to meet some innovative

entrepreneurs and as a result, would like

to extend a special appreciation to all of the

MBEs who we met and spoke to at the 2014

NMSDC Annual Conference.

In communities throughout North America,

we’re continuing our efforts to generate

opportunities for MBEs and WBEs to help

us design, build and sell quality vehicles. We

appreciate the opportunity to work together

with diverse suppliers and strategic partners

and look forward to creating a more inclusive

and sustainable business culture.
