Newsletter Issue No.10 17 July 2015 P & C Meeting - Tuesday 21 July 2015, at 7:30pm in the Admin Building. All Welcome Telopia Avenue, Wavell Heights, PO Box 384, Nundah 4012 Ph: 07 3350 0333 Fax: 07 3350 0300 www.wavellshs.eq.edu.au From the Principal NAIDOC Week The NAIDOC theme for 2015 was ‘ We all Stand on Sacred Ground: Learn, Respect and Celebrate’ . This theme highlighted the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s strong spiritual and cultural connection to land and sea. It was an opportunity to pay respect to country; honour those who work tirelessly on preserving land, sea and culture and to share the stories of many sites of significance or sacred places with the nation. This theme was also chosen specifically to highlight and celebrate the anniversary of the ‘Handback’ of Uluru, one of these sacred sites, to its traditional owners on 26 October, 30 years ago. Our indigenous girls’ dance group (pictured) proudly performed at Wavell Heights State School NAIDOC assembly. Work Experience For six months, the Year 10 students have been preparing themselves for this important week. 254 students entered the world of work for four days from Tuesday, 23 to Friday, 26 June. The aim was to make students work ready and to help them make informed choices about their career paths, beginning with subject choices to be made shortly for Year 11 and 12. The industries that offered placements were diverse and interesting and students are to be congratulated on their hard work in securing jobs on their own! One student went to New South Wales for interstate placement and several students proactively completed work experience in their own time. Students were supported by 37 staff members who monitored their progress via phone calls or visits. Initial feedback is that our students were fantastic ambassadors for our school and found work experience very valuable. Pictured: Cameron Rath and Georgia Howlett enjoyed working at Northside Produce looking after a menagerie of animals. Dear Parents, Last term saw some great activities conducted for Wavell students. The Year 7 camp was a fantastic success and enabled our first Year 7 cohort of students to truly feel part of their new school. Thanks to our Junior School Coordinator, Mrs Hickman and the wonderful Year 7 teachers for running a tremendous camp at Noosa North Shore. I attended the camp and was impressed with their enthusiasm and energy. In the final week of term, Year 10s went off to the world of work on their work experience placements. I am proud of the excellent feedback with regard to their diligence, initiative and willingness to learn. Thanks to Mrs Peinke, our Work Experience Coordinator, for her many hours of organisation and leadership of this program. Semester report cards were posted over the winter break and should now have been received by all parents. If not, please contact the school for assistance. Parents are reminded that they are now able to access a full range of their child’s information if they register for QParents. This enables parents to view report cards, attendance, behaviour and financial information. Registration can be requested by emailing [email protected] . For further information, please visit https://qparents.qld.edu.au. Also mailed out was information about online bookings for the Parent Teacher Night which will occur next Tuesday, 21 July from 3:30pm to 7:00pm. If you encounter difficulties with making bookings, which close on Monday, 20 July at 8:00am, please contact Mrs Minter on 3350 0301. Closure of bookings allows teachers time to prepare for interviews. The semester results were again very pleasing – I am particularly impressed with how well our Year 7s and 8s have settled and performed in their first semester at high school. Students will engage in academic monitoring over the coming weeks to review their individual performance and plan strategies to build on their success. I look forward to the Academic Excellence Ceremony on Monday, 3 August at 2:00pm, for the top five per cent of academic students and families who will be invited to attend. The Queensland Government is conducting the Early School Leavers Survey. It is a short confidential survey that collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. It helps our schools understand pathways post secondary school and guides support services for successful transition into other study or employment. Wavell High has a very good student retention rate and most students graduate from school with a QCE or VET qualification, however there are some students who leave school prior to completing Year 12. If you know any past Wavell student who left school in Years 10 or 11 or prior to completing Year 12 last year, please encourage them to take part by visiting www.education.qld.gov.au/nextstep/ or phone 1800 068 587. The term ahead is a very busy one with a range of special events scheduled: School, District and Regional Athletics, the annual Ski Trip, our Year 12 Formal, election of 2016 Prefects, the Queensland Core Skills Test, Year 10 SET Plan Interviews and Career Day, Years 8 and 10 Subject Selection Evening, Year 7 2016 Parent Evening, Literacy Olympics, several drama, dance and music performances and Wavell Classics. These events are in addition to the main focus for all Wavell students: the unrelenting quest for continuous academic improvement. It is important for all, that Wavell continues to be a vibrant and exciting place to learn. Year 7 Camp

Athletics Carnival

In the last week of Term 2, over 200 of our Year 7 students, along with prefects and teachers enjoyed three days at Noosa. Students faced a variety of challenges (as pictured) and included kayaking or mountain biking, high ropes, beach games and initiatives. The camp went very well. The weather proved very kind despite the overcast skies. Students who attended are commended on their attitude and behaviour. The days went fast and many wished they could stay and holiday on camp! Thanks to our prefects and teachers for their support.

Our Annual Track and Field Carnival is next week. Pre-carnival events will be on Wednesday, 22 July in Form Class, Lessons 1 and 2: 12 years 800m (L. 2A); 13-18 years 1500m, Javelin and Triple Jump, and 13 and 14 years High Jump. Students participating in these events must nominate by lunchtime Tuesday, 21 July. Competitors then go to normal classes for lessons 3 & 4. On Wednesday, 22 July, normal classes run for all other students not involved in the pre-carnival competition. On Thursday, 23 July the Annual Athletics Carnival for 2015 will be held. All students are expected to attend this compulsory whole school event. Students are permitted to wear their sports uniform and may add their house colours at school (hair spray is not acceptable). Last year’s event was very successful with the majority of students participating, while others enjoyed supporting their house. This year’s carnival looks to be bigger and brighter. Can back-to-back champions Keren hold off the challengers this year? Who will be the Age Champions for 2015? Events commence at 9:30am sharp with a variety of activities scheduled.
