Accomplishment Statements

Use these three elements to create strong, concise bullets:

1. Challenge: What problem did you solve?

2. Action: How?

3. Result: What did you do/achieve? (For whom?)

You can use either form: RAC or CAR

Tip: Numbers and Technology stand out

Accomplishment Statement - Examples

Before: Worked in Sales Department using data to support marketing efforts and decision makingImproved customer reach and product placement by developing predictive models in collaboration with marketing managers

Before: Responsible for updating inventory databaseOptimized inventory management by redesigning database, which reduced excess stock by 15%

OR Optimized inventory management by redesigning database, 15% reduction of excess stock

Exercise: Write a Strong Bullet 1. Find a bullet from an internship, position or project from your previous resume.

2. In a breakout room with 1 classmate, discuss it and try to strengthen it using CAR (challenge, action, result) or RAC.

Keep in mind: How can it be more clear, concise, numbers orientated?

What Goes into Additional Information Consider including (some not all):

• Language Skills • Professional organizations and certifications• Journal contributions or other publications • Work authorizations• Interests and/or community service organizations

Sharing something personal/memorable will prompt the reader to ask you

Additional Information - Example ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

Resume Pitfalls • Too wordy and hard to read because if you do this a recruiter will stop

reading your resume because they don’t have time to read a diary of all of

your thoughts. Then they will not learn who you are and your resume will end

up in the special bin.

• Spellin or grammer errors.

• Using the same words over and over and over and over and over and over

• Being too general

Tips to Remember• CONTENT: Must be relevant to the reader

• ACCURACY: Dates, titles, spelling (error free!)

• PRESENTATION: Consistent formatting is key

• RESULTS/IMPACT: Quantify/qualify your results or business impact as much as possible - ($ saved or $ generated, %, #’s)

• TECHNOLOGY: Talk tech to me, they really want to know when you used the tools

• ACTION VERBS: Use a variety of action verbs to begin each bullet
