Telling Tales
Mrs Daniel loves telling stories and can
remember those her Great Aunt used to tell
her BUT has run out of stories to tell her
granddaughter, Lola. She has therefore
challenged the children to write some new
stories for her to learn.
Children will learn to retell three traditional
tales. They will be challenged to adapt and
innovate these tales to create new stories to
tell. They will research how storytellers
enhance their performances and create
masks, puppets and music to accompany a
performance of their new tales. These tales
will be performed for the rest of the school
and Mrs Daniel.
English
They will produce three stories of their own
based on The Three Little Pigs, The Magic
Porridge Pot and We’re going on a Bear Hunt.
They will learn to tell these tales with actions
and create a story map. They will then use
these tales as templates to create new
stories. They will write and record their own
versions of these stories and make puppets to
accompany them.
Art
The children will learn techniques to make puppets
and masks to support the telling of their stories.
They will develop ideas by looking at a selection of
puppets and masks, make a plan and identify
simple design criteria. They will evaluate their work
against the design criteria.
ICT
They will learn to record and edit their ideas in
textual and pictorial formats and to share their work
with others. They will use a recording device to retell
a traditional story. They will use
Video to record acting out a traditional story through
role play or puppets and add captions.
Retell a traditional story through a media program –
Purple Mash.
Creativity
Their creativity will be developed through innovating
traditional stories. They will confidently generate and
discuss new ideas. They will use imagination and
“what if” to create a new idea.
Thinking
The children will develop their thinking skills by
using their imagination to generate ideas and make
connections to create innovative outcomes. They will
evaluate their learning and achievement based on
self generated and agreed criteria.
