Telling Apart Legal Separation from Divorce

The main difference between a divorce and a separation is that a divorce legally puts an end or terminates a marriage.

Tips and other important facts about separation

Try not to keep the children in the dark.

The spouses are not the only people who can be deeply affected by a separation, because their children can be just as or even more affected by it.

Both spouses do not have to agree on the separation. It does not matter if either both or one of the spouses wishes to separate, because all it takes is just for one spouse to want a separation.

It is important to have legal assistance. To prevent couples from making rash and vague agreements and from missing out on important aspects in legal separation, they are recommended or even required to have a lawyer to assist them.

Cohen Buchan Edwards LLP is among one of the firms here in Richmond with experts in family law who can provide solid legal advice and assistance.
