SONS SPONSOR EFD DIVE TEAM TRAININGWe received the following E-mail:

This past fall, with the generous help from the S.O.N.S. of Lake Erie, the Erie Fire Department was able to train nine firefighters to become new divers for our water rescue team. The new divers were trained in basic scuba which consists of six 2 hour classroom sessions, six 2 hour pool sessions which were held at the Prep Events Center swimming pool, and five open water sessions that were held in different open water areas throughout Erie County.

With your help the nine new divers, along with several divers already trained in basic scuba diving, started to train in advanced scuba diving. Unfortunately Erie’s fall weather didn’t cooperate with the class and the open water boat dives were postponed until spring when the weather improves.

We would like to sincerely thank you for your continued support to the Erie Fire Department and we look forward to serving the citizens of Erie.

Thanks again and stay safe. Donald Sauer, Dive Coordinator / Erie Fire Department

GREAT LAKES WATER LEVELS TO BE NEAR RECORD HIGHS

IN 2020Mark Hicks, The Detroit News

Published 12:16 a.m. ET Dec. 6, 2019 | Updated 10:00 a.m. ET Dec. 6, 2019

Despite below-average precipitation and seasonal decline, Great Lakes water levels remained near record highs in November, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers reported.

After a year of some of the worst flooding ever in parts of the Midwest, concern is rising that the spring of 2020 may see more high water in areas that still are struggling after deluges. The Army Corps projects that each lake will continue to be at record or near-record levels for the first six months of next year.

The findings released this week come after the Great Lakes Basin saw its wettest 60-month period ending Aug. 31 in 120 years of record-keeping, according to corps records.

The mean levels for lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, St. Clair, and Ontario were about a foot higher than the same month in 2018, according to the monthly bulletin from the Army Corps’ Detroit office.

The November mean water levels were: Superior, 603.05 feet; Michigan-Huron, 581.56; St. Clair, 576.48; Erie, 573.10; Ontario, 246.19.

The report showed those levels all were within 1-2 feet of record highs set in 1945, 1985 and 1986.

NOAA PREDICTS ICE – BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

By Paul Pedro January 5, 2020 6:15 a.m.@Paulpedronews

Residents living along the Lake Erie shoreline can breathe a sigh of relief this winter.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), a U.S. government scientific agency, is predicting that ice cover on Lake Erie this winter is expected to be a maximum of 80 per cent, which is the highest projection for all of the five Great Lakes. The NOAA said maximum ice cover on the lower lakes, such as Lake Erie, normally occurs between mid-February and the end of February and Lake Erie has the highest ice cover because it is shallow.

Preliminary findings released in a January 2, 2020 report from the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory showed ice cover on Lake Huron should be up to 66 per cent this winter, Lake Superior 54 per cent, Lake Michigan 41 per cent, and Lake Ontario with the lowest level of ice cover at 32 per cent because of its depth.

The ice will replace splashing waves along the shoreline caused by strong wind, meaning that properties along Lake Erie will get a break from erosion, damage, and flooding caused by pounding waves and record-high water levels in 2019.

The NOAA said as of January 1, 2020, the total Great Lakes ice cover is 1.3 per cent, which is about two thirds less than around this time last year, and barely anything compared to early 2018, when the ice covering the Great Lakes was already almost 20 per cent overall. NOAA predicts the total maximum Great Lakes’ ice cover this winter to be around 47 per cent, well below the long-term average of 55.7 per cent. The highest Great Lakes ice coverage on record is 94.7 per cent in 1979 and the lowest is 9.5 per cent in 2002.

600 BROWN TROUT ARRIVE AT SONS HATCHERYAfter months of hard work the SONS of Lake Erie Hatchery was ready for work. On Friday December 13th a PFBC truck from their Linesville hatchery delivered 620 brown trout to our facility

at the foot of Chestnut St. Ten of our volunteers were on hand to receive the fish which were mostly over 6 inches long. They will be held until April when they will be released into the Presque

Isle Bay. They should be close to nine inches by that time. Our crew is at the hatchery every day. If you would like to help out feeding and cleaning the fish call 814-453-2270 for more info.

The driver of the PFBC truck from the Linesville, PA unloads and passes buckets of the 600+ brown trout to our volunteers. The crew took time to pose for a photo.

IF YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO NEEDS A FISHING ROD AND REEL LET US KNOW BY CALLING 814-453-2270. We have received some donations of rods and reels lately and would like to pass them on to whomever may want one but can’t afford it.
