Brother Versace

Brother Brendan Versace was a highly-respected teacher of Mathematics, Science, Agriculture and Studies of Religion at McCarthy Catholic Senior High School from 1973 until 1982. Brother Vee, as he was affectionately known, together with Mr Stan Meere, worked diligently to establish and maintain the main McCarthy oval, as well as other parts of the school grounds, through difficult drought conditions. The oval, as it is now, bears testimony to how much work went into its establishment and maintenance in those early days of McCarthy. Fittingly, the oval is named after Brother Versace. A commemorative stone bearing a plaque to this effect stands near the library. Brother Versace, who currently cares for the Brothers’ farm at “Winbourne”, Mulgoa, was recently in Tamworth to attend the reunion of the HSC class of 1972, the year he began teaching at McCarthy.

SCHOOL BAND

The McCarthy school bands have attended several events over the past few weeks. On Sunday 20 October the Saxophone Quartet (with 2 extra clarinets) performed at the Inaugural Festival of Flight. It was great to see all the planes and entertain the public over the widespread PA system. On Thursday, we were joined by students from the Cammeray Public School Concert Band for a

workshop. They also presented a concert to Year 7 students. Their conductor recommended many of the current Year 7 students should join the band program next year.

Last Saturday, the Concert and Jazz bands performed at the St Nicholas’ Spring Fair. They represented McCarthy well. Left: The McCarthy Sax Quartet playing at the Flight Show last Sunday. Jeffrey Wong, Zoe Hannaford, Jerome Studdy, Gabrielle Studdy, Aleisha Hawken, Hayden Davy.

SHOW TEAM

Quirindi Show

The McCarthy Show Team attended the Quirindi Show at the end of last term. This year we were able to exhibit our own Simmentals “Heartbreaker” and “Perfect Timing”, who were awarded Grand Champion Simmental Bull and Grand Champion Simmental Female. The students were also able to compete in the British ring with our own Red Angus bull “Hero”. In the steer ring we were competitive with Alex Watt leading our Red Angus X Steer “Renegade” into 1st place in the Heavyweight class, and Reserve Champion steer overall. The McCarthy team also competed in the Schools’ Day on the Saturday which was a great opportunity for newer Show Team members to gain some valuable experience. We were successful in the junior competitions, with Claudia Turner taking out “Grand Champion Parader” with “Renegade”, and Paul Murphy being awarded “Reserve Champion Parader” with “Colorado”. In the Junior

Judging, the accolades went to Michael Davis for 1st place, Alex Watt for 2nd place and Claudia Turner for 3rd place overall, with special congratulations to Zeb Douglas for placing the cattle in the same order as the over-judge. Several local cattle breeders, in need of extra leaders, borrowed McCarthy students and, across the course of the weekend, the iconic blue and gold McCarthy uniform was seen both in the Brahman ring, in the British ring leading Herefords, Poll Herefords, Angus, and of course our own Simmentals and Red Angus.
