St George’s HospitalThe Accident & Emergency Department provides a service for the assessment and initial management of people suffering fromsignificant acute illness or injury. It accurately assesses and, if indicated, effectively treats minor illness or injury.The Department is always open but people are encouraged to recognise that it is an emergency service although follow-upclinics are held and physiotherapy is available within the Department. There is a separate children’s area and a primary careservice is in place for evenings and weekends. A nurse-led minor injuries service is also provided.CONSULTANTS

A comprehensive Dermatology service provides an in and outpatient service for adults and paediatric patients. General clinics areheld most days at St George’s and specialist clinics are provided for children, warts, non melanoma skin cancer and malignantmelanoma. Patients with suspected melanoma are seen urgently at the weekly Skin Cancer Screening Clinic. An average of 1,000skin surgery operations are carried out every year. Endoscopicprocedures include routine upper GI endoscopy, ERCP, colonoscopy and bronchoscopy. All associated therapeutic procedures arealso available. The department provides a comprehensive range of services in sexually transmitted diseases, genital infections, HIV testing andthe care of HIV positive patients. The service is highly confidential and is organised on a “walk in” self referral basis.Appointments are offered for same day HIV testing service, Special Family Planning clinic and for follow up of HIV positivepatients. Health advisers are available during all clinics to provide counselling where appropriate.

Specialist service for patients aged 65 and over living within Wandsworth and Merton on a needs related basis. Inpatient bedsfor acute admission, assessment and rehabilitation are at St George’s and Bolingbroke Hospitals for Wandsworth patients, andat St George’s for Merton patients. Respite beds for Wandsworth patients and long-stay unit for Band 1 Wandsworth patients atBolingbroke Hospital. There are three outpatient clinics per week at the Bolingbroke for Wandsworth patients and two clinicsper week at St George’s for Merton patients. Facilities includethe Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an expanding ICU for older children, dedicated paediatric operating theatre andoutpatient clinic. Centralreception receives specimens from GPs, their staff and patients between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. St George’s Hospital The well developed ward and clinical services aim to promote safe, effective, economic use of medication through close liaison withother SDUs and the use of a well established formulary which undergoes regular review.Individual expertise in the use of medication exists in, paediatrics, oncology, geriatrics, cardiac patients, HIV and other infectiousdiseases and therapeutic drug monitoring. All of these services are supported by the Drug Information Centre, which has on-linesearch facilities and provides information on any aspect of drug use. A resident pharmacy service is available outside working hours.
