St George’s HospitalThe Accident & Emergency Department provides a service for the assessment and initial management of people suffering fromsignificant acute illness or injury. It accurately assesses and, if indicated, effectively treats minor illness or injury.The Department is always open but people are encouraged to recognise that it is an emergency service although follow-upclinics are held and physiotherapy is available within the Department. A comprehensive Dermatology service provides an in and outpatient service for adults and paediatric patients. General clinics areheld most days at St George’s and specialist clinics are provided for children, warts, non melanoma skin cancer and malignantmelanoma. Patients with suspected melanoma are seen urgently at the weekly Skin Cancer Screening Clinic. An average of 1,000skin surgery operations are carried out every year. Specialist service for patients aged 65 and over living within Wandsworth and Merton on a needs related basis. Inpatient bedsfor acute admission, assessment and rehabilitation are at St George’s and Bolingbroke Hospitals for Wandsworth patients, andat St George’s for Merton patients. Respite beds for Wandsworth patients and long-stay unit for Band 1 Wandsworth patients atBolingbroke Hospital. There are three outpatient clinics per week at the Bolingbroke for Wandsworth patients and two clinicsper week at St George’s for Merton patients. St George’s Hospital The Department offers a comprehensive surgical service to children, led by three specialist paediatric surgeons. Facilities includethe Regional Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, an expanding ICU for older children, dedicated paediatric operating theatre andoutpatient clinic. St George’s HospitalGPs have open-access to the Phlebotomy service by direct referral of patients between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Centralreception receives specimens from GPs, their staff and patients between 9am and 5pm Monday to Friday. Reception staff alsodistribute specimen containers and request forms, etc. as required and answer all general, non-results, enquiries about thepathology service. Central Pathology also co-ordinates the GP courier service which visits each practice daily (Monday-Friday) forthe collection of specimens, the delivery of reports and consumables, and the exchange of mail.
