From the Principal
Term 4 is a busy time for our school with students preparing for final exams and
school planning well underway for 2017. Good luck to Year 12 who is currently
in the middle of their HSC exams.
I would like to remind parents of Year 10 students that there is no school
organised or sanctioned Year 10 formal this year.
With the school age being increased to 17 years and no formal School Certificate
exams, the traditional leaving school point at Year 10 does not exist anymore.
Our aim is to help students stay on and complete a HSC or assist them transition
into the workforce or other forms of education as the opportunity arises for the
individual.

Welcome back to Term 4.
G&T lunchtime groups will be
up and running again in Term

A). There are still several
competitions that I’m sure
students will be keen to enter;
see below for two fantastic
competitions and be sure to
have a crack at this week’s
Code Breaker!
Sustainability Film Competition
‘Storytelling is the oldest yet most effective form of communication’.
We are still seeking entries from Bellingen High School students that focus on this
year’s competition theme, Reimagining Resources. Films should be up to three
minutes long and must include at least one of four elements – waste, water,
energy and materials – in any genre, be it animation, drama, comedy, musical or
dance.
Films are to be submitted by 1 November 2016, so if you have any questions or
require any assistance please come and see me ASAP in the HSIE Staffroom.
Some of our amazing and talented students are already up and running with
their films; well done!

Animate TROVE images
and WIN!!!
TROVE IS CALLING FOR ENTRIES IN THE
2016 GIF IT UP COMPETITION
During October, TROVE wants you to explore and play with public domain and
openly licensed images from Australia’s cultural collections, turn them into GIFs and
enter the international competition, GIF IT UP. A GIF is an image file that has been
animated in some way and loops continuously. Using a few free tools, anyone can
make one! Head to this link if you want to check out some examples of last year’s
entries:
https://www.nla.gov.au/blogs/trove/2016/09/14/animate-trove-images-and-win-0
What are the rules? Before you start GIFing, please read the rules on the DPLA website:
https://dp.la/info/gif-it-up-2016-submission-page/ First off, you need an image, or
images, to turn into a GIF. The image must meet one of the following:
be in the public domain
has a rights statement that indicates it is out of copyright
has a Creative Commons license which allows re-use and adaptation.
Trove has done some of the work to help get you started. Just open this list- all the
images in there meet the criteria for the competition:
http://trove.nla.gov.au/list?id=93439
Once you’ve found your image you need to get creative and start animating! There
are some great tutorials on the GIF IT UP resources page that use free software, or
free in-browser tools.
Where does GIF IT UP fit in the curriculum?
Technologies: Design thinking - visualising and generating creative and
innovative ideas, planning, and analysing and evaluating those ideas that
best meet the criteria for success.
Visual Arts: Making - learning about and using knowledge, skills, techniques,
processes, materials and technologies to explore arts practices and make
artworks that communicate ideas and intentions.
7-10 History: Historical skills - explanation and communication.
Entry is now open and will stay open until 31 October.
So, if you are interested in taking part in any of these cool competitions and need
some assistance, please see me in the HSIE 1 Staffroom, or attend the GATS
Lunchtime Group on Thursday Week A in F4. I look forward to seeing you there!
Also, don’t forget to keep checking the GATS Google Classroom page for
additional information, TEDTALKS and much more.

Aerosol sprays are popular and commonly used for applying lots of products, from the
personal (like body sprays or deodorants) to the domestic (like cleaning sprays).
However for some people with asthma their use can trigger symptoms and may even
lead to an attack.
When used, the liquid contained in these sprays is emitted into the air under high
pressure, creating a fine mist which can spread quite a long way. The chemicals and
strong smells in the mist, when inhaled, are what can trigger asthma symptoms and a
possible attack. Because of the amount of time the spray stays in the air and the
distance it can travel, even spraying some distance from the person with asthma can
still lead to problems.
This most often causes issues in areas like change rooms, where people are using spray
deodorants etc. after exercise, and even in workplaces if there is cleaning being
undertaken while there are others working in the area.
We recommend you avoid using aerosol sprays whenever there are other people
around - there are usually plenty of good alternatives available. We encourage schools,
gyms, sports clubs etc. to adopt a no-aerosol policy - keep in mind that around 1 in 10
people has asthma - it's likely in any change room there'll be someone who will be
affected.
As a general rule, if you have to use aerosol sprays, make sure you're in a well-
ventilated space and away from other people who may have asthma themselves.
Always follow manufacturers' instructions around safe use and observe any health
warnings.
From the Deputy Principal Aerosol Sprays & Asthma
Below is an excerpt from the Asthma Australia website.
At Bellingen High School we ask that all students follow the advice in this
excerpt, and not use any aerosols unless it is outside and with permission
and the direction of a teacher. Dot Panaretos

Year 8 VALID Test
The Validation of Assessment for Learning and Individual Development (VALID) test for Year 8 students will be held between Wednesday 2 November and Friday 11 November 2016. The test takes approximately 70 minutes. The VALID Science 8 test is an interactive, multimedia test completed entirely on a computer.
VALID Science 8 contains multiple choice, short response and extended response tasks that are grouped around real-world issues, including scientific investigations. This is a diagnostic test, with tasks framed on Stage 4 outcomes and essential content in the NSW Science Years K-10 Syllabus. Students will be tested on their:
Knowledge and understanding of science.
Understanding and skills in the process of scientific investigation.
Ability to evaluate evidence, make judgements and think critically.
Ability to access information and communicate scientific ideas.
Students also complete a survey about their opinions, attitudes and values about science. Since students complete VALID Science 8 on a computer, each student needs to bring headphones or earbuds that plug into a school computer. Earbuds for an iPod or portable player are suitable.
If your child has a disability that needs special consideration or has been educated in English for less than one year, please contact your child’s school to discuss special provisions or possible exemption from the test.
Results of the test will be available during Term 1 2017. Information about each student is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that the right to privacy of all students is maintained. A personal report for each student will be sent to parents/carers to describe the science knowledge and skills demonstrated by the student in the test. There will also be information about how your child’s results compare with overall performance of all students in the test.
If parents/carers require additional information please do not hesitate to contact the school.

Year 7 News
Welcome back Year 7 to Term 4. This will be a busy term with class
assessments, Gold Excursion and the Year 7 Picnic all happening. If you would
like to go on the Gold Excursion you need to make sure that you have more
than 20 Bronze awards collected and that you have had no behavioural issues,
(e.g. suspension) then you are entitled to attend this excursion once the full
payment conditions have been met. Notes are available from Ms Taylor or Mr
Wickham. New Bronze tallies are on the Textiles Noticeboard for Year 7.
Please check at your leisure.
Uniforms are looking great at this time of the term. Keep up the great work.
Any student who hasn’t handed in their Internet Agreement needs to either
collect one from Ms Williams the TSM or the Front Office ladies. You are not
able to access the internet unless this has been completed.
Just a reminder about in class behaviour; it is your responsibility to act
appropriately in all classes. Any inappropriate behaviour is recorded and you
could end up on a negative behaviour card and on loss privileges. Loss of
privileges means you will not be able to attend school excursions. By doing
your best for the rest of the term you should succeed.

Bellingen EYE/Centre for Ecological Learning The Crescent Bushwalk
If you love nature and are in Years 9, 10, 11 or 12 come join us for a 3 day (2 nights) backpacking trek - NEXT WEEKEND 28-30 OCTOBER.
Leaving from Thora, our destination is the remote upper reaches of the beautiful Bellinger River where we will venture out from our lush camp by a deep waterhole to ascend the ancient and freaky geological feature known as the Crescent. This 19 million year old horseshoe-shaped ridgeline is actually the remnant of the main feeder vent for the Ebor Volcano (the volcano is, sadly now extinct). Whilst we are following a track from our drop-off point to camp, our day walk through magnificent old growth forest to the Crescent is untracked so this is an excellent opportunity to gain some bush navigation skills and see country rarely visited.
The walk is sponsored by Bellingen EYE/Centre for Ecological Learning, and will be led by experienced bushman and wilderness mentor Andrew Turbill, and ably assisted by Benn Wolhuter and Karina Davila. All young people in Years 9-12 are welcome to join us. No bushwalking experience is necessary, but a moderate level of fitness is required.
Some backpacking equipment is available for borrowing from the Bello Youth Hub. The cost for the 3 days is $160, which covers all food (except Fri lunch), supplies, guides, and insurance. Our policy is that no one should miss out due to financial difficulties so please let us know if you require some financial assistance. For more information and to register, go to cel.org.au or call Lisa at 0423 362 844.
From the CAPA Faculty New England Sings
Over the recent weekend, Bellingen High School Choir participated in “New England Sings”, held at the Armidale University. The New England Conservatorium of Music, in collaboration with regional schools put together an inspirational and challenging program for both choral and orchestral students.
The intention of this event is to provide opportunity not only for students, but to highlight Australian composers who are commissioned by the New England Conservatorium to write new works for this event. We performed ‘Invictus” composed by Paul Jarman, in which the lyrics were from a poem written by William Henley in 1875. Mr Jarman stated he was personally inspired by this poem and also by the story that Nelson Mandela, who was imprisoned on Robin Island for 27 years in solitary confinement, kept this poem to give him strength, so as not to be defeated. Incredibly he did survive to become South Africa’s most loved President.
The students rehearsed all day Saturday, this included working with a full orchestra and primary school students. On Sunday, our massed choir had two performances and it was wonderful to note that both concerts were sold out. Our choristers are to be congratulated for their enormous commitment and contribution to our schools choral program.
I would like to thank Derek and Kerry Ridgley, Paul Nebauer, Priya Curry and Jo Hodgson for driving choir members to Armidale, ferrying them to rehearsals, not to mention their fantastic collective cooking skills in the kitchen! It would not be possible without these parents who gave their weekend to support our choir. We rehearse Friday mornings at 8am. We are commencing a new repertoire this term so new singers are welcome.

The Clappers
It’s that time of year again, time to make movies!
This year’s Clappers film night will be held on Friday 18th November - that’s Week 6!
For the uninitiated, the Clappers are Bellingen High’s Oscars, an evening of dress ups and movies. Prizes are on offer for films and the best dressed; so even if you don't make movies you can start planning your gorgeous outfit.
There are 4 categories, with prizes for each. The categories are:
Minute Me - a one minute autobiographic film that captures the essence of
you, what you love, how you live, whatever, so long as it is 1 minute long and it’s about you.
Documentary or Mockumentary - a short film, between 3-5 minutes that discusses
an issue, or portrays a special person or sport, or activity, anything really so long as it’s non-fiction and it doesn’t have to be serious.
A short fiction film - tell a story in less than 5 minutes, let your imagination run
wild, it could be a crime story or a love affair, it could be a thriller or a comedy.
A music video - get your friends together and have some fun shooting a video
clip for your favourite song, if you’re really talented you could even sing it. You may use an app like Video Star to make things easier
There is also a prize for The People’s Choice, voted for, by the audience, on the night.
Please ensure your movies are handed in by Monday 7th November
Come on people, get shooting! See Ms Lane for more details. Lynda Lane

During Term 3 Year 7T1 completed their hand crafted designed jewellery
boxes. For Year 7 students this was their first time in the woodwork
environment. Many great jobs were produced.
Term 4 will see Year 7T1 working in the Metalwork room making candle stick
holders, coat hangers and jewellery if time permits.
Nixon (left), Yani (middle) and Lucas (right) showing off their great handiwork!
Term 3 saw Year 8T3 produce some fantastic Intarsia Breakfast Trays.
Intarsia is the process of producing hand cut wooden designs and inserting
them into another piece of wood. In our case it is the base of the breakfast
tray.
Pictures below show Emily Ruming’s dolphin, Oliver Mayo’s cricket symbol and
