Indian Railways to introduce real-time train tracking via GPS system

Indian Railways have made an announcement that the trains may soon get real-time GPS

tracking system to avoid accidents. The real time GPS tracking system will be integrated

with Google Maps and will be accessible through range of mobile devices & computers. The

technology arm of Indian Railways, the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS),

has developed a GPS-based solution with help of Indian Space Research Organization

(ISRO), which can provide exact location of a train with an accuracy of 10 metres, and

latency of 2 minutes, on a real- time basis. Earlier, in 2009, as an initiative towards the usage

of GPS in railways, Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur developed SIMRAN, which

offered bi-directional data communication link between running train and a central server.

Commercial vehicle telematics global market to reach US$17.3 billion by 2017

Telematics insurance can curb car accidents

Global fleet management and trailer tracking

system subscription to cross 30 Million by 2016

Global Industry Analysts, Inc. (GIA), has released a report on commercial vehicle telematics market. The report suggests that global

market for commercial vehicle telematics is projected to reach US$17.3 billion by the year 2017. As per the report, growth will be primarily

driven by rebounding sales of commercial vehicles, development of infrastructure designed to support vehicle telematics, and application

expansion to include navigation, provision of real-time traffic information, travel information, content & LBS information, in addition to the

conventional fleet operation, and vehicle tracking applications.

UK: The latest research by Co-operative Insurance states that adopting telematics

insurance can curb vehicle accidents on the road. The research has revealed that

motorists with such black box installed in cars to monitor speed and other factors are 20

per cent less likely to get into vehicle collision.

The latest research “Commercial Telematics

Market Data, Global” by ABI Research, has

forecasted that global fleet management and

trailer tracking system subscriptions are expected to grow from 13.3 million in 2012 to

30.4 million by 2016. The research further suggests that insurance telematics in

commercial fleets is also finally gaining momentum with recent announcements from

TomTom/Motaquote and NexTraq/GMAC. The said developments indicate rising interest

levels in Unrelated Business Income (UBI) in consumer markets.

71% of fleets impacted by fuel cost hike: GreenRoad survey

USA: GreenRoad, a provider of services

for driver performance and safety

management, has released survey results

indicating that fleet operations across the

U.S. are critically impacted by rising fuel

costs. The survey suggests that 71% of

fleet leaders opine that they were highly

impacted by the recent increase in fuel

costs and 92% of fleet leaders expect fuel

prices to keep rising while 58% expect the

cost of fuel to increase significantly. Fuel

now represents 26-75% of costs for over

61% of all fleets.

Fleet Telematics: Real-Time Management and Planning of Commercial

Vehicle OperationsThe book offers a telematics-enabled information system and thereby addressing a

major hurdle for computer-based real-time decision support: the lack of timely and

reliable information.

Author: Asvin Goel: Adjunct Professor of Supply Chain Management, MIT-Zaragoza

International Logistics Program, Zaragoza Logistics Center, Spain

The book proposes a telematics-based information system that promotes a real-time,

computer-based decision-support system for the management of truck fleets. The

book has six chapters with a good discussion of telematics, and an overview of the

realities of commercial vehicle operations and management information systems for

fleet management. For book review visit: http://interfaces.journal.informs.org/content/39/4/375.full.pdf+html

Mobiliz: Telematics technology to monitor driver behavior

USA: Teletrac has announced the availability of its software platform, Fleet

Director 9, which unites new business intelligence technologies and the

latest in-cab color touchscreen tablets with 2-way messaging, fleet tracking,

navigation and safety analytics. Fleet Director enables operations managers

across industry segments like trucking, HVAC, energy and mining,

construction, transportation, etc. to run fleets more efficiently, at lower cost,

while improving driver safety and productivity. The new in-cab color tablet

leads to streamlining the process of entering, recording, completing and

storing all required information for drivers' logbooks.

USA: inthinc Technology Solutions has revealed its patented

cell and text detection antenna. The antenna technology detects

cell phone wave frequencies emitted from the driver seat,

verbally alerts the user to terminate the call or text and sends

real-time alerts to a web portal or directly to a manager. The cell

and text detection antenna will be integrated with inthinc's fleet

management and driver safety device – waySmart solution.

With waySmart, fleet managers can monitor driver behavior

with features such as GPS-based vehicle tracking and in-cab

verbal coaching alerts for speeding, idling, seat belt use and

aggressive driving.

USA: GPS Intelligence has

that may sit idle for extended

time periods. The ToughTrack PRO offers an apt tracking solution

for both land and marine recreational vehicles and equipment. Its

durable, dust-proof and water resistant casing enables users to

monitor and track assets in virtually any environment.

Cape Town: MiX Telematics will introduce MiX Track in Asia. According to the company, Mix Track is an apt solution for fleet
