Grasping the Magnitude
Cyclone Yasi would have almost covered the entire United States

The eye itself….
35km across at landfall, the eye alone would stretch over all of the Katrina-ravaged city's centre.

Another perspective
Here is the eye covering most of the North Island of New Zealand

Loss of Power = Loss of Comms
• “Power outages across the region will have an impact on our network over coming days. We can advise that we have around 450 network sites (exchanges, mobile towers, and roadside cabinets) that are currently without power. They are operating on back-up power at this stage. Our crews will work hard to keep these sites powered, but there will be some sites we cannot access due to safety reasons like damaged power lines and debris blocking access.”
• “We are noticing that our mobile network is carrying significantly increased traffic. Customers may experience difficulties in making and holding mobile calls. Where this is happening, we advise that customers wait a few minutes, then try again.”

Emergency Power is ‘Short Run’
Dean says:
4 Feb 2011 at 12:56 pm After the cyclone passed through our town of Mount Surprise in the early hours of
the morning we never lost power, never lost Mobile phone coverage or wireless internet. So why at midday are we now without mobile phone or wireless internet on the Next G service?

What our Customers Said“It’s absolutely pouring and the crews are still working away as hard as ever so I would
like to personally say thanks and great job to all … getting totally soaked in order to make everyone else happy!!”
“You have given us electricity. Thank you all so much … today in Tully you transported in many generating sets as big as shipping containers to power up lights and refrigerators. Australians of the year to be sure!!”
“And a fine job you have been doin’ too!! Glad we had our power back on after just over a week, but to see what your guys have been working with up north in Cardwell and Mission Beach … Wow!”
“Thanks so much for restoring our power last night. I only waited a week, but it felt like a month. I forgot how good it was to enjoy the simple things. I will never take my electricity for granted again.”
1. Utility and Telco Carrier to use ‘Shared Site Identification’ minimising time taken to locate and restore site power.
2. All ‘Critical Sites’ to include 1 weeks supply of standby power.
Key Lessons Learned
1. Ergon Energy will construct and operate mission-critical telecommunications networks for real-time control of the power network.
2. Work with telecommunications carriers to improve the reliability of the networks supplied to Ergon Energy.
3. Liaise with Emergency Services and Police to enable coordination of telecommunications in times of crises.
