Reece Mussman Aesthetic: abandonment I chose the aesthetic of abandonment (with a hopeful/optimistic twist). One thing I was trying to do was get images that went along with being lost, misplaced, or abandoned (obviously) and I tried to go about it in more than just a personal sense of abandonment. For example, with the picture of the big red tree next to the open field of dead grass, I felt this tree embodied a lost or abandoned person. The bright red jumping out of the yellow, dead grass caught my eye, and what I then realized how strange it was to have this elaborate, vibrant red tree next to an entirely empty dead field. But then I looked at is as kind of life among death, or hope amongst abandonment. Another picture that I feel might need explanation is the ACT . picture. I know the picture isn’t aesthetically very pleasing, but the words jumped out at me. And the red dot (alone red dot, abandoned). When people feel like they are abandoned they should act, move one, pull forward; so that is why I thought that picture was appropriate. An area where I struggled was trying to find a variety of different feelings of abandonment by using productions of design. When I was looking around for pictures to represent my aesthetic I notice that I continued to find myself taking the same type of photos and I was being very redundant with my design thoughts. The photograph of the graffiti clock, representing time. When you feel abandoned or alone it feels like time just slowly tics. Now I could have just gotten a picture of a clock, but I thought this one brought the hopeful energy to complement my abandoned feel. The photograph of the girl standing alone on the left side of the picture is the feeling I most am striving for. The setting sun joined by her stretched shadow made a great scene I thought. Her look of confusion contributes to the feeling and notice she is missing a shoe. Her posture seems timid and nervous. The tattered shoes below the chipped stairs represents the uncertain feeling of where to go next when feeling abandoned. The tattered‐ness of the pictures makes it seem like they have been at the feeling of uncertainty for some time.

picturewasappropriate.

aloneitfeelsliketimejustslowlytics.NowIcouldhavejustgottenapictureofa

clock,butIthoughtthisonebroughtthehopefulenergytocomplementmy

abandonedfeel.

ThisissortoftheaestheticIwasshootingfor.IwantedsomethinglessdarkbecauseIwantedtohavesomethinglikeglimpsesofhopewithintheabandonment.IgotpicturesthatweremorecolorfulbecauseIdindtwantmypicturestoseemasdepressingwiththedarkness.InsteadIshotforvibrantcolors,mostlyred,forglimpsesofoptimismandasensethatthereisstillsomefireandhopeinalostperson.
