Introduction

The Taconics Group is a Regional ConservationPartnership (RCP) working across state boundaries toachieve three main goals: landscape conservation, stewardship, and economic development in the TaconicMountain region of the northeastern US. The TaconicsRCP is divided into three sub-‐groups: the northern, central, and southern groups. The southern collaborativegroup combines the efforts of the Housatonic ValleyAssociation (HVA), Columbia Land Conservancy,Audubon Connecticut, and Audubon Massachusetts.Other partners include Franklin Land Trust, SheffieldLand Trust, Berkshire Natural Resources Council, andSalisbury Land Trust. The Southern Taconics group usedTELE’s six-‐step planning process to developcommunications and outreach plans for three events: anEstate Planning Workshop, a Woods Forum, and aForesters for the Birds workshop. This case study, whilerecognizing lessons fromthe first event, will highlight theuse of TELE in theWoods Forum, whichwas arguably themost successful project of the three.

STEP 1: SET OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this outreach were for landowners to 1)attend a free Woods Forum for forest landowners at astrategically convenient location (Indian MountainSchool, Lakeville, CT), 2) take advantage of free followupconsultation with naturalists/foresters, and 3) promotethe subsequent Forests for the Birds workshop.

STEP 2: DEFINE YOUR AUDIENCE

Before hosting any events, the Southern Taconicsgroupcompiled adatabaseof over 800 landownersinConnecticut,Massachusetts, andNewYork. Forthe Estate Planning workshop, all 800 weretargeted; this turned out to be too wide of anaudience. Therefore, partners narrowed down theaudience to 275 landowners in Connecticut andNew York for the Woods Forum and had muchgreater success.

STEP 3: PROFILE YOUR AUDIENCE

The Woods Forum advertisements were targetedat Woodland Retreat owners primarily located inConnecticut andNewYork. These landowners arelikely to feel a strong emotional connection totheir landanduse the landmore for recreationandenjoyment than economic reasons.

People pay attention to a message when it is relevant to aproblem they wish to solve, links to their identity, or if ittaps into their core values. The Taconics group attemptedtoalign theirmessages toappeal to the interestsandvaluesof their target audience. They used their own template fora postcard, which included a large picture of a bird and anoffer of pie. They incorporatedTELEbest practices like thephrases “I care about my land. How can I care for mywoods?” They emphasized the opportunities to getinformation from experts, sign up for bird habitatassessments, and learn how to manage woods whilebenefiting wildlife.

STEP 4: CLARIFY YOUR MESSAGE

STEP 5: CHANNELS AND MATERIALS

The Southern Taconics partnership reached out toConnecticut and New York Landowners. They used thelandowner database they compiled to mail 275 postcardsfirst class to targetedwoodlandowners in these two states.Bulk mail proved to be ineffective during the EstatePlanning outreach process. After the low turn out at theEstate Planning workshop, partners also realized thatposting flyers inpublicplaceswasnot aneffectivemediumfor advertising their events. They instead took advantageof the opportunity to publicize the workshop through theNature’s Notebook column that Tim Abbott (of HVA)writes for the local Lakeville Journal weekly. About half adozen additional landowners were contacted directly byeither Salisbury Land Trust or HVA and invited to attend. They tried to contact landowners as many times aspossible before the event, as one “hit” was likely to resultin low attendance.

STEP 6: EVALUATION

Challenges• Working in a fragmented landscape: It was

hard to attract people from different geographieswhen the actual landscape is geologicallyfragmented, and landowners feel ties to cities, towns, etc. rather than large landscapes. It wasespecially hard to attract people from one stateto a meeting in another.

• Reaching younger woodland owners: Whilethese events were able to attract older woodlandretreaters, outreach was ineffective for middle-‐aged landowners who own second homes in theregion. Further exploration of electronic mediawill be needed to reach these folks.

25 landowners (17properties) attendedWoods Forum

Woods Forum Strategy's Results

Lessons Learned• It was a very good idea to choose a site

(Indian Mountain School) near the state linethat was well aligned with local culturalassumptions about the “community” andwhere it would be reasonable to travel for ameeting.

• Partnering with a school can lead tosignificant cost savings.

• It worked well to combine the Audubonbird assessments with the Woods Forum.Unlike in the Estate Planning workshop’scase, where similar events had been hosted inthe area by another conservation organizationthat same year, HVA was able to partner withAudubon to minimize event duplication.

• Pie and birds are powerful motivators toget people in the door and keep them talking!
