Session Descriptors and Key Points: Science Academy for Grades 5-8 Session Descriptor: Experience a total immersion into the new science 2010 TEKS for grades 5-8 during this three-day professional development. Par-ticipants will explore hands-on, student-centered lessons framed in the research-based 5E instructional model. These sessions provide connections to and strengthen participants' knowledge of College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), English Lan-guage Proficiency Standards (ELPS), and Response to Intervention (RtI). Key Points:

Change - The 5-8 science TEKS changes include: adding of equipment, journals, deleting some 1998 TEKS, moving TEKS to different grade levels as well as the addition of new TEKS.

Introduction of CCRS, RtI, and ELPS - Participants are exposed to the fundamentals of the these programs as well as how to implement these programs within science instruction.

Importance of the TEKS and vertical alignment - Teachers are shown vertical alignment and given the opportunity to identify specific examples of how the content taught in grades 5-8 support high school Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.

Active Learning through the 5E model - Each grade level lesson models the 5E learning format and provides examples of hands-on learning. Earth science TEKS are the anchoring concepts and teachers get a real feel for using labs in the 5E lesson format to support student understanding.

Par-ticipants will experience student-centered lessons that are framed in the research-based 5E instructional model and provide con-nections to the College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS), and the Re-sponse to Intervention (RtI) model. Participation in Project Share, the online professional development portal that promotes com-munication and collaboration among participants, will be included in the training. Algebra I EOC Success

Session Descriptor: Examine the concepts in the Algebra I TEKS and learn strategies to prepare your students for success on the End-of-Course assess-ment during this professional development. Algebra I EOC Success Academy II

Session Descriptor: This training emphasizes research-based Tier II strategies from the IES Practice Guide for Struggling Students and engages partici-pants in how to identify students needing Tier II support for focal areas in Algebra I and meet their instructional needs. Participants will learn how to interpret results of formative assessments, use these data and other forms of data to make instructional deci-sions, and apply practical strategies for implementing evidence-based interventions for students receiving Tier II mathematics sup-port. Participants are required to have completed an online or face-to-face Algebra I EOC Success training prior to enrolling in this Algebra I Academy II.

Key Points:

Tier II Instruction - The PD takes a look at data to help teacher identify students in Tier II and begin to plan interventions for these students. The IES Practice Guide was introduced in the MSTAR Academies and is now a focus of research-based recommendations.

MSTAR (Middle School Texas Algebra Ready) Academy I

Session Descriptor: MSTAR Academy I (Grades 5-6) Participants will examine the big ideas in the Grades 5-6 mathematics TEKS and learn strategies to prepare students for success in algebra during this professional development. Hands-on, student-centered lessons designed to provide connections to and strengthen participants' knowledge of the middle school mathematics critical for success in algebra, the College and Career Readi-ness Standards (CCRS), English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS), and Response to Intervention (RtI) will be explored. Sessions will provide Texas teachers and administrators with online resources and follow-up activities through an interactive, online platform as well as allow educators to build online professional learning communities for further development and growth. MSTAR Academy I (Grades 7-8) Participants will examine the big ideas in the Grades 7-8 mathematics TEKS and learn strategies to prepare students for success in algebra during this professional development. Participants will review important sources of data on student knowledge and think-ing related to algebra readiness, connect each of these sources of student data to its appropriate types of decisions, and

design a data-driven action plan for improving some aspect of algebra-readiness related instruction during the next year. This workshop is a CORE workshop that focuses on high-quality Tier 1 instruction and should be considered foundational for new teachers, teachers who are changing teaching assignments, and teachers who are developing skills in a particular professional development pathway. Key Points:

Tier I Instruction - The PD is centered on high-quality Tier 1 instruction in the classroom with an in-depth reflection of cur-rent practice through data collection. The MSTAR Universal Screener is the focus of the data collection and is utilized to help make decisions about data along with a lesson study tool.

Participants will learn how to interpret the MSTAR Universal Screener results and other forms of data to make instructional decisions and apply practical strategies for implementing evidence-based interventions for students receiving Tier II mathematics support. Participants will be introduced to the MSTAR Diagnostic Assessment, currently under development. The session will also include access to online resources and professional communities provided through Project Share.

Key Points:

Participants will learn valuable classroom instructional strategies that support algebra readiness as well as explore supports and differentiations for diverse learners. ESTAR Academy 3-4 This two-day academy (Elementary Students in Texas Algebra Ready) is designed to further define algebra readiness and discuss the implications for classroom instruction in grades 3-4. Participants will learn valuable classroom instructional strategies that support algebra readiness, as well as explore supports and differentiations for diverse learners. The primary focal areas for this training are: Fluency with Whole Numbers, Fraction Concepts, and the relationship between Fractions and Decimals. Key Points:

Tier I Instruction - The PD is centered on high-quality Tier 1 instruction in the classroom with examples of active/engaged learning with reflection of current practice.

Strengthens knowledge of the elementary school mathematics critical for success in algebra English I, II, & III EOC Success Session Descriptor: This information session will include an introduction to the design of the End-of-Course assessments for English I, II, & III and how those assessments relate to state standards. Participants will develop an understanding of what students will need in order to succeed.

Key Points:

Narrative writing will no longer be the only genre tested in the composition section of the test. ~English I students will write two one-page essays in one or more of the following genres (field test included): Literary & Expository. ~English II students will write two one-page essays in one or more of the following genres (field test included): Expository & Persuasive. ~English III students will write two one-page essays in one or more of the following genres (field test included): Persuasive & Analytical.

The single passages and thematically paired passages reading section of the EOC will contain the following genres: Literary, Literary Nonfiction, Poetry, Drama, Expository, Persuasive, Procedural (embedded), Media Literacy (embedded). The the-matically paired passages may contain a poem paired with an expository piece, or any number of genre combinations.

English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) Session Descriptor: Explore ways to increase achievement for English language learners using the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS). The ELPS require specific focus on developing academic language in the content areas through reading, writing, speaking, and listen-ing in grades K-12. In this session, participants will examine the ELPS and will practice writing language objectives using the four domains. The resources contain specific strategies that will enable teachers to incorporate the ELPS in their classrooms. Key Points:

All of the ELPS academies are the same for the first 3/4 with the last 1/4 of the training being a content specific lesson.

Introduction to the ELPS Framework and Responsibilities for Science Educators

Using the Cross-Curricular Student Expectations as Language Objectives in the Science Classroom

Using the Proficiency Level Descriptors as a roadmap for linguistically accommodating instruction

Social Studies TEKS Overview for Grades K-12 Session Descriptor: This two-day training will provide an overview of the new social studies TEKS. Participants will examine the organization of the revised Social Studies TEKS, identify new elements, and explore the alignment of the standards, instruction, and assessment in the classroom. The training is designed to build participant knowledge of College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS), and Response to Intervention (RtI). Sessions will provide Texas educators with online re-sources and follow-up activities through Project Share, the statewide online, interactive platform. Participants will also be invited to join online professional learning communities.

Key Points:

This training also includes a differentiation component and allows time for teachers to examine and reflect on the TEKS changes for the Social Studies content area that they teach.

Teacher access to Project Share is not a prerequisite but is highly encouraged for follow-up communication and networking. Social Studies Grade 8 Academy Session Descriptor: In this two-day training, participants will examine the new grade 8 social studies TEKS and explore ways to improve overall social studies instruction to support student success on the STAAR Grade 8 Social Studies assessment. The training is also designed to build participant knowledge of College and Career Readiness Standards (CCRS), English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS), and Response to Intervention (RtI). Sessions will provide Texas educators with online resources and follow-up activities through Project Share, the statewide online, interactive platform as well as facilitate the creation of online professional learning commu-nities.

Key Points:

This training focuses on the course TEKS and ways to improve instruction to support student success on the Grade 8 Social Studies STAAR assessment. This is not training for test preparation and practice.

Teacher access to Project Share is not a prerequisite but is highly encouraged for follow-up communication and networking.
