News Letter - June 2018 HOSPITAL:

It started raining towards the end of the month – however, the regular monsoon has not yet set in. The number of surgeries went up to a small extent. In the first quarter of the year, we have performed approx.. 250

more surgeries.

The workload in paediatric department is now picking up with joining of full time paediatric Ophthalmologist.

Fast track OPD has continued to show a good turn out with an average of 11 patients per day for the month.

Preparation for NABH entry level is going on slowly. We have prepared necessary posters and displayed them at appropriate places.

Two special cases need a mention here. Champaben from Village Mangrol, Ta. Mangrol came to us with both eyes mature cataract from one of our camps. Her Hb level was only 1.5 gms. We sent her to the referral

hospital for blood transfusion BUT somehow, it did not occur. The patient came back to us. We managed three pack cells and transfused the patient. When the Hb level came up to 6.5 gms, we operated both eyes, one

after the other in the presence of an anaesthetist. We sent her home with iron tablets. The family was very happy and we are also very happy that we could help her. The family is genuinely very poor. The other is baby

Anjali – 2 months old – was brought to us with endogenous endophthalmitis. We did anterior chamber tap and it turned out to be fungal endophthalmitis. Patient was put on anti fungal drugs. Until the first follow up, her

condition was improving. We felt very good and satisfied.

From this month, we have started going to Mohan Dayal Hospital, Pardi near Valsad twice in the month. Previously, Ophthalmologists from Maharashtra used to perform surgeries by holding two mega eye camps in the

year. The chief of the hospital, Shri Sunilbhai Dalal is our well wisher and donor. Upon his request, we have started going there. We have performed 28 surgeries there during two visits in the month. This will remain a

regular feature from now onwards.

NETRAJYOTI TRAINING CENTRE:

Dr. Parth Patel from Ahmedabad has completed phaco fellowship. Dr. Akash and Dr. Toral Patel from Visnagar have joined their SICS fellowship during the month. Dr. Kishan Makwana from Veraval has joined medical

retina training for one month in the middle of the month.

Certificates for the CCDR course have been received towards the end of the month and will be handed over to the respective candidates soon.

Dr. Neetu Negi and Dr. Rishi Mathur from old civil hospital have joined their medical retina training under our Diabetic Retinopathy project.

326 ASHA workers from Umarpada, Mangrol, Areth and Jhankhvav CHC areas attended the one day orientation training.

Three more batches of two staff members from Shri Bhairav Eye Hospital, Bisalpur, Rajasthan came for 10 days exposure in OT techniques.

Optometry students are preparing for their final exam of second semester to be held early in July. This year, we have decided to keep management quota seats with ourselves and have already given admission to 10

students directly. Hopefully, this year, there will be good number of students joining the programme.

Viral Tailor had gone to Aravind Eye Hospital Madurai for one week during the month to undersand their publicity system.

WORKSHOPS AND CONFERENCES:

Dr. Uday, Nikhil Mehta, Pradeep Patel, Ajendra Sunva and Alpesh Mistry attended the annual conference of Vision 2020 : Right to Sight India programme held at Sankaradeva Netralaya, Guwahati, Assam. Dr. Uday had

two presentations also over there.

Mr. Vimal Prajapati attended a half day workshop on NABH accreditation organised by Vadodara Ophthalmic Society in Vadodara.

Vyara Satellite Centre:

The workload dropped slightly and we performed nearly 60 surgeries. We have added a sweeper staff in the team at Vyara.

Evaluation:

Dr. Uday visited Tulsi Eye Hospital, Nashik for one day as a part of third follow up of the clinical audit conducted long back.

Community Based Rehabilitation Programme:

The survey is going on full swing in Vyara taluka. Workers are very enthusiastic and the survey is progressing well. Camps have also started with good turn out.

VIVEKANANDA PRAGNYACHAKSHU BHAVAN:

The schools have started and there are new additions to the hostelites and we have sent three adolescent students to residential schools this year. Now, there are 15 students in total in the hostel. The new students are

getting used to the environment.

GENERAL:

Dr. Uday was invited by the health commissionaire to discuss about the possibility of adding telemedicine in the vision centres. Use of technology for door to door screening was also discussed and more details are being

worked out.

We had invited a motivational speaker Ms. Rupalben Shah from bardoli twice during the month. All the key staff members joined the sessions. Since, all the staff members who attended the same felt that the sessions

were good and useful, we have decided to invite her twice in a month through out the year. We have divided the staff members into three groups and she will take approximately 12-15 sessions with each group over two

years. We hope that these sessions will help the staff members grow their understanding of the value of life and help them perform better at work and also become better human beings.

Second batch of half of the staff members visited Jyoti eye hospital, Visnagar and Vasantprabha hospital, Vadnagar towards the end of the month. They also visited the blind welfare activities of Rashtriya Andh Kalyan

Sangh run by Prof. Ramnikbhai Halari in Visnagar. On the way back, they visited Sharpedge industries and saw the manufacturing of the IOLs and surgical blades first hand. Our well wisher and long time donor Shri

Manibhai Prajapati made all the arrangements for the lodging - boarding of the staff members and spent good amount of money for this. We sincerely appreciate his generosity.

A CME on Tuberculosis was organised on behalf of IMA, Mandvi chapter early during the month with Dr. Dhawal Rathod as the speaker. This event was organised and sponsored by the RNTCP dept. of the Govt. of

Gujarat.
