Twin-Skin roofing and cladding systems are a popular form of construction consisting of aninternal profiled metal liner sheet, a metal spacer system and an external profiled metalweathering sheet. The system is insulated using glass or mineral wool quilt or slab and built upon-site. For maximum flexibility Tegral also supply a secret fix system (Alu-Seam® and Seam-Loc)and a site-assembled composite system (Trinsul).

Tegral’s Twin-Skin roofing and cladding systems can offer the designer the opportunity to achieveboth aesthetic appeal and the required functionality to meet regulatory design standards. Tegral Twin-Skin systems can also be specified to provide key functional benefits such as fireresistance and acoustic protection - direct advantages not found in other roofing and claddingsystems. The five key benefits of Tegral Twin-Skin systems are presented as follows:

Freedom of

1 Freedom to CurveTegral’s Twin-Skin Systems can be curved to create interesting designs for BOTH roofing and cladding.

2 The Potential of ShapeTegral produce a range of profiles to suit all design needs. Used on largeelevations they can create striking shadow effects or combined with innovative detailing, they can create arresting design features.

3 Strength & ProtectionTegral’s Twin-Skin systems are proven as the best choice for fire and acoustic protection.

4 Green CredentialsReduce, Reuse and Recycle – in line with Ireland’s national campaign to reduce waste and help protect the environment – Tegral Twin-Skin systems are FULLY recyclable unlike PIR core composite panels.

5 Colour - Nature’s True BountyAvailable in a vast array of colours, Tegral’s Twin-Skin roofing and cladding may be specified to suit every environment.

F r e e d o mFreedom to Curve

3

Tegral’s roofing and cladding profiles can be curved toprovide the designer with many creativeopportunities. The nature of Tegral’s Twin-Skinprofiled metal systems allows for either self-curvingor machine curving of the individual profile sheetdepending on the radius involved. The Tegral Alu-Seam® standing seam roofing system allows forboth concave and convex curving with the benefit ofsecret fixing. The sinusoidal form of Tegral Fineline 19allows for curving to very tight radii. Furtherinformation is available from Tegral.

The Potential of

Profile shapes for roofing and claddingThe term profile is used to describe the shape of themetal sheets used in the Tegral Twin-Skin system. The careful choice of profiles used in combinationwith each other, with interesting details or withother forms of cladding materials can emphasise aparticular feature or change the overall scale andvolume of a structure.

Depending on the depth of profile used, Tegral Twin-Skin systems can create different shadoweffects which can be exploited by the designer toprovide an attractive contrast to smoother surfaces.

100% Non-combustiblemetal and mineral wool

fire-wall assembly with notoxic fume risk.

FireThere has been a great deal of confusion regardingthe fire performance of metal cladding systems inrecent years. The designer can be reassured thatTegral Twin-Skin systems meet the highest standardsfor fire protection laid down by both the insuranceindustry and the regulatory authorities and thereforeprovide the greatest possible reassurance to bothdesigner and occupier.

Maximum use of non-combustibleroofing and cladding systems willalways provide both designer andclient with the HIGHEST level of fire protection.

Fire insurance and Tegral Twin-Skin systemsThe two principal reference authorities for fireinsurance are Factory Mutual (FM) and the LossPrevention Council (LPC). Factory Mutual who provideapproval to many international companies, have apreference for non-combustible materials. The LPCrequire the use of non-combustible or LPC approvedcombustible materials. Regarding Tegral Twin-Skinsystems, the metal components and glass or mineralwool material are classified as NON-COMBUSTIBLEand are therefore usually acceptable to insurerswithout further qualification.

Statutory requirements and Tegral SystemsBritish Standard 476 is the relevant recognisedstandard in the UK and Ireland for fire performance. The combination of Class O (most favourableclassification) profiled metal external cladding andinternal liner sheets together with the use of non-combustible glass or mineral wool insulationhave been approved to BS 476: Part 22 for fireresistance. Tegral Fire-Wall assemblies have beenindependently certified by Warrington Fire ResearchCentre Ltd. (WFRC) in the UK and meet therequirements for integrity and insulation to suit avariety of system applications.

AcousticTegral’s Twin-Skin systems for both roofing andcladding provide an excellent solution for soundabsorption and noise reduction and satisfy the Health& Safety and Environmental Health regulations.

Acoustic DesignThere are two relevant methods for reducing theeffects of noise within a structure - sound reductionand sound absorption. Unlike other forms of claddingsuch as composite panel, Tegral’s Twin-Skin acousticsystems can offer both sound reduction and soundabsorption properties.

Sound AbsorptionSound absorption is defined as the damping ofreverberant sound that normally reflects back fromsmooth hard internal surfaces. Sound absorption canbe provided by using Tegral’s perforated Liner Sheetsin conjunction with suitable mineral wool insulationmaterial. Please consult Tegral Technical Services forfurther details.

Sound ReductionSound reduction is defined as the reduction in soundtransmission (the level of noise escaping from abuilding). Tegral’s Twin-Skin systems provideeffective sound reduction as they combine theacoustic insulation properties of mineral wool withthe relatively high density of the metal sheeting.Sound reduction can be increased by the use ofdenser or thicker insulation. Tegral Metal FormingTechnical Services can provide design assistance.

EU and the Kyoto ProtocolIf the EU is to achieve the Kyoto Protocol goals, thenimproved insulation will have to be given seriousconsideration. According to the research institute‘Ecofys’, - with better insulation of both old and newbuildings, 363 million tonnes of carbon dioxide couldbe saved each year.

Life Cycle CostingThe cost of a building should be determined on awhole life basis and not just on the initial cost. Thechoice of roofing and cladding systems can have asignificant impact on both the value of business tobe conducted in the building and the operating costsof the building, over a lifetime. While initial costsmay seem low – the longer term whole life basisshould be considered when selecting claddingsystems.

The Case for steelThe results of a recent study on a Twin-Skin systemcarried out by CORUS Colors showed that only a verysmall proportion of environmental impacts were dueto the coating used. The principle contribution isattributable to the steel substrate. Steel howeveroffers the following environmental credentials:

100% recyclable.

Uses minimum volume of materials.

Clean, dust free construction.

Minimum site waste.

Good end of life options – dismantle and re–use, demolish and recycle.

Offsite fabrication in controlled environment.

Adaptable and flexible to suit changing lifetime requirements.

The Case for mineral and glass wool insulationA leading mineral wool manufacturer tested theirmineral wool insulation for performance against keyenvironmental impacts.

A typical mineral wool insulation product can save morethan 100 times the energy used in its manufacture, transportation and disposal. The energy balance canbecome positive only five months after installation.

Mineral wool saves 61 times moreeutrophication components than were emittedduring production.

The use of mineral wool results in the balance ofacidifying gas production becoming positive onlyfour months after installation. (Source: Force

The use of glass wool saves 100 times moreacidifying gases than is used in its production.

Glass wool production uses up to 80% recycledglass. (Source: www.isover.com)

Colour - Nature’s True Bounty

10

Colour StrategyThe appearance of cladding is influenced by manyfactors, including the surface finish, the shape of theprofile, the building form and detailing, and thedynamics of colour itself.

Colour in the environment is a dynamic experience. As the quality and nature of light changesthroughout the day so dramatic changes can occur inthe appearance of the colour of a structure. Theposition of the sun will also influence the movementof shadow which will lighten and darken the colourof cladding.

Colour also modifies our perception of shape andform. Dark colours reduce apparent size, whereaslight colours increase it. Bright colours also appear toadvance towards the viewer.

The aim of designers will always be to contribute tothe built environment with their choice of colour ontheir buildings – the range of colour options fromTegral will facilitate this ambition.

Tegral have partnered with steel producer CorusColors to introduce the latest and most innovativepre-coated steel to the Irish market. These pre-coated steel products include the following ranges:

HPS200® – The European market leading pre-coatedsteel comes with a maintenance free Confidex®
