Programs for students from Kindergarten to Grade 12

Teepees at School facilitates professionally designed cross cultural programs

using First Nations materials, resources, perspectives, and cultural understandings

to assist educators in the delivery of the curriculum in accordance with

the Ministry's prescribed learning outcomes.

BRING AUTHENTIC TEEPEE CULTURE TO YOUR STUDENTS

Drawing upon the integrity and richness of our ten thousand years of history and deep roots, we allow students to experience aspects of authentic Native culture of nations originating: in Northern BC, in Peace River Country and east of the Rocky Mountains.

Our emphasis is on the Anishinabe Nation and others related to us such as Cree, Blackfoot, Salteaux and many others who originally used eastern and northern parts of British Columbia, but now in modern times, inhabit almost every school district in the province.

One of our goals is to respectfully reflect Aboriginal concepts of teaching and learning. The activities shared during the interactive workshops break down myths, misunderstandings and stereotypes that have developed historically and from various media.

Schools report dramatically reduced racism and increased respect for human equality and cultural diversity amongst their student populations subsequent to the program delivery.

An opportunity for the whole school to experience the teepees!

Mukwa Teepees at School

Whole School Program

One large teepee and one smaller teepee furnished with museum quality artifacts form the classrooms. Students learn about: historical and contemporary teepee uses, teepee etiquette, and traditional teepee furnishing and living. They also learn how we harness the energy of the sun and wind and use other natural energies to heat and cool the teepee.

A traditionally furnished authentic teepee is an encyclopaedia of knowledge. Moving students out of the classroom and bringing them into the circle of the teepee alters their operational power base.

A paradigm shift occurs! Even challenged students are calmed and focused by the serenity ot the teepee. • In a teepee, participants sit in a circle where all are physically equal. • Sensual references are altered in the unfamiliar and beautiful shape of the teepee. • Sound behaves differently in a teepee stimulating auditory response. • Natural light behaves differently stimulating visual acuity. • The smell of the natural grass floor is the odour of life itself, stimulating olfactory functions.

Moving children out of the classroom into a natural and exciting environment like an authentic Aboriginal teepee stimulates the exploration of social studies, natural science, history and Indigenous values, beliefs and practices.

Discuss optional experiential activities including: Native drumming and singing, setting up a teepee and more.

Whole School Program: Up to 7 classes per day (depending upon school schedule) Maximum 30 students per class

$895/Day + Freight & Travel The use of time honoured teaching and learning traditions serves to instil pride in Aboriginal youth and respect for First Nations heritage. Incidents of racism are dramatically reduced.

Half Day Program

This interactive program is an introduction to the richness of authentic Native culture of Nations originating east of the Rocky Mountains. We provide a brief history of the teepee including construction methods and teepee furnishings and living. Scale models and museum quality cultural artifacts are used in the program delivery.

Teachers select an experiential arts & crafts activity for their students such as creating a scale model teepee or making a dream catcher. Please discuss your desired learning outcomes when booking.

Half Day Program: Maximum 30 students per class $495/Half Day + Travel

Full Day Program

The Full Day Program builds on the Half Day experience. The morning is the half day program as outlined above.

In the afternoon the students actually learn to set up a large teepee hands on. Class activities continue inside the teepee, and students can also take down the teepee at the end of the day, time permitting. This is a truly memorable experience.

Whole Day Program: Max. 30 students per class $695/Whole Day + Freight & Travel

School Camp Out

This exceptional cultural program creates memories that last a lifetime.

The camp out adventure can be one or several nights. Activities and games shared during the camp build character, create bonding and reinforce the team spirit of the group..

The school liaison works directly with Teepees at School to determine the schedule, nature, content and desired learning outcomes of the camp.

Sample of a one day camp out experience schedule:

Discuss age appropriate experiential camp crafts, games, activities and desired learning outcomes.

Camp Out Experience: Minimum group size 20 students.

$135/Student per Night + Freight & Travel Teacher is Free Camps can be held in the school grounds or at an al-ternative destination. Teepees at School provides separate teepees for the girls and the boys. Meals, snacks and beverages are included.

Thank you so much for the fantastic presentation today. My

Grade 3 class of 16 boys and 6 girls were completely

enthralled. Your patience with them, especially when we were

"helping" you take the teepees down was remarkable, and it was

great learning experience for them. You provided a rich educa-

tional setting, and I could see that many of my students, girls

and boys, but especially the boys, were inspired by the

brilliant scientific technology of the teepees.

Please come again.

BlueJay Elementary

We are home safe and sound. I had a hard time

believing we can go from our teepee village back to

real life in such a quick, abrupt shift. My students

raved about the trip on the way home. I am pretty

sure they were nicer to each other too. It was

probably the best field trip I've ever been involved

with. Thank-you very much. You and your friends

really deliver a fantastic programme.

I have had the pleasure of taking my students camping with Teepees

at School on four occasions. Every camp was a unique adventure and

a chance for the students to experience the culture in a vibrant and

meaningful way. It was a great opportunity for my students to enjoy

a time together and to learn so much from the day and evening

cultural programming and the traditional activities: lacrosse, cocoosh,

canoeing and more!. The camps became the one event they never

forgot and mentioned always with

the urgent request to do it all

again!
