NorthTyneside Council believes thatit is important that the needs andwishes of young people areconsidered and that they are involvedin making decisions that affect theirlives. That is why, asYouth Councilmembers living in NorthTyneside, wewere happy to create this edition ofTEENZ, which has the theme ofparticipation.

Through this magazine we will showsome of the ways that we, as youngpeople, can become involved in ourcommunity and make a difference toour own lives and to those around usthrough participation. Whether it bethrough becoming a volunteer, joiningan areaYouth Forum, or through yourschool/college council, we can all helpto effect change and help dismiss thenegative myths that often surround us.

Through the process of editing thismagazine, we have realised that thereare many things that we are positivelyinvolved with and we should feel veryproud of ourselves.

NorthTyneside Council wants to make it easier for you toget hold of the information it provides. We are able toprovide our documents in alternative formats including largeprint, audio and community languages.Tel: 0191 643 8133.

We would love to hear from you about yourideas and suggestions about living in NorthTyneside and future ideas for . Visithttp://childrenfirst.northtyneside.gov.uk oremail: [email protected] orTel: 0191 643 8133.

Olamide JohnAkinropo(known as John), aged 15,from Burnside Businessand Enterprise Collegewas voted in with 822first preference and 260second preference votes, making his a winningtotal of 1,082 votes. KyleMyers, aged 16, from StThomas Moore HighSchool, was runner upwith 1,017 votes, makinghim the naturalcandidate for DeputyMayor. We met with NorthTyneside’s firsteverYoung Mayor, to find out what hispassions are when it comes to helpingyoung people and what he wishes tosee happen with the £25,000 budgethe will help to spend on behalf of theyoung people of the borough.

“I’m very excited to be theYoungMayor, however I do realise it is a bigresponsibility, but I am hoping to domy best to make it work. I am hopingto work with theYouth Council andget some advice from them on howthings work within the borough. SincetheYouth Council has been inexistence for a longer time, it will beinteresting to learn about theexperience that the members havegained and how we would go aboutmaking the ideas we’ve got into reality.

“One problem young people have isbeing considered unruly because ofhanging around in groups. Manypeople see them as dangerous. Iwould like to encourage young peopleto use the facilities around theminstead of hanging around the streets. If I had unlimited amounts of money, Iwould like to build a multi-purposepark!”

Among his targets and plans for hisyear in office, John would like to learnmore about:

• The effect of the credit crunch onstudents and their parents

• The truth about knifecrime

• The truth aboutteenagers and drugs, drink and sex

• The relationshipbetween the policeand young people

• Achieving excellentexam results.

He is also interested invisiting NorthTynesideGeneral Hospital andsome of the oldpeople’s homes inthe borough.

We wonderedwhat he likes to doin his spare time.Although we don’tthink he will have any left this year!

“In my spare time, I love to playfootball, computer games or visit thecinema with friends. My favouritefood is burger and chips. My favouritecolour is red and my idol is RyanGiggs. ”

OurYoung Mayor believes:“With thehelp of the young people of NorthTyneside, we can make changes.

During his year in office John will be workingalongside the Young Mayor’s Cabinet. This Cabinetwill be selected from the existing Youth Council andthe Young Mayor candidates. There will be nineCabinet members who will each be responsible for aparticular issue or portfolio.

• Sports and play facilities for the under 13s.• Sports and youth provision 13 year olds and over.• Community safety; bullying and crime.• Climate change and environment; cleaner streets and recycling.• Community engagement; collection and sorting of young people’sideas from schools and groups.

• Transport; improvement of public transport for young passengers.• Finance;managing theYoung Mayor’s budget.• Health; all aspects of young people’s health.• Wellbeing; teenage pregnancies, drug, alcohol, smoking and substancemisuse.

Young people can [email protected] ideas or issues of concern.”

The government backed programme isbeing run by the Customs House, theArts Centre in South Shields. It hasalready begun in Seaton Burn for North

Tyneside and in Jarrow for SouthTyneside, branching out now across theregion.

So far, the programme has deliveredtaster sessions where children andyoung people could try out differentarts workshops to, quite literally, ‘findtheir talent’! The legendary ‘NewYorkBoy’, Ken Swift, has delivered ‘RockDance’ workshops.

There have been trips to Cirque deSoleil and aYouth Art exhibition. At themoment, creative ‘hubs’, venues wherethese activities can be delivered from, are being developed around North andSouthTyneside so the programme ofcreative and cultural activity can bedelivered on a regular basis.

Most important to this process is theYouth Culture Forum. Made up ofyoung people from across North andSouthTyneside, it meets once a monthto discuss both the general FindYourTalent programme and their own plansfor activity. The Forum is open to

Gillian,Gillian...one in a million

I asked GillAlexander, NorthTyneside’sStrategic Directorfor Children,Young People andLearning, herthoughts onparticipation foryoung people, here in NorthTyneside.

Are there opportunities foryoung people to participate? We offer lots of opportunities for youto get involved in the council and haveyour say, for example, through groupssuch as theYouth Council,Youth AreaForums,YoungVoices Group, and theHaveYour Say Group and alsothrough events including theWorldCafé and Children andYoung People’sConference. We also carry out an annual survey touncover the issues that are importantto you. One issue that emergedrecently was that you felt you couldn’tinfluence change. We really want toaddress that, because the councilneeds your input to help us makeNorthTyneside a great place for youto grow up.

Will theYoung Mayor play arole to encourage andsupport participation?TheYoung Mayor will work with youin lots of ways, and one of those waysis to talk to you about how you can

get more involved in the council. What’s really important to me ismaking sure that you feel safe aboutexpressing your views. One way inwhich we try to do this is via theWorld Cafe events and also theUltimate Kids days. But it mustn’t endthere; those views need to go todecision makers, without formalmeetings where the adults take thelead, and we’re working on that.Andthis should not just be a tokengesture, but lead on to realdecision-making.

What are the barriers toyoung people participating?I think we need to communicatemore about how to get involved.I also think it’s important to hostactivities in surroundings which youfeel to be yours.

How important is it for youngpeople to participate? You are all citizens in your own rightand central to the services we providefor you. So it’s vital you get involved,to help us to do that properly.

What would you say toanyone who doesn’t want toparticipate? You have a right to be heard, and alsoa responsibility to express your view.Get out there and have a say!

Some of us were also at theWallsendWorld Café event in March. This was achance for young people from the areato plan questions and invite guests whoare decision makers. The idea is for young people toquestion and talk to people like themayor, the police, healthworkers and senior officers in thecouncil about issues that areimportant to us. This year we talkedabout crime and safety, health, youthfacilities and economic difficulties thatface our families.

It was good that everyone was listeningto all of the different views and ideasthat were put forward and it wasinteresting to hear what everybody hadto say. The adults ended the event bymaking pledges on what their servicescould do to improve things for us.

Another thing that came up is thatthere is a lot going on but not manyyoung people know what is on andwhere. OurYouth Forum has decidedto make a leaflet that can show peoplewhat there is to do.

Wayne from SUB 21 (read the SUB 21article on page 12) came to one of ourmeetings and told us that we can helptheir project by uploading informationonto the website. That way we will beable to look at the website and get upto date information on events andactivities that are coming up. If we wantto take part, we can then book a place– log on to www.sub21.com

TwilightCert 12A

Classic Disney

Lion King II:Simba’s Pride

The BoatThat Rocked Cert 15

Based on the best selling ‘Twilight’ saga by Stephenie Meyer, ‘Twilight’ is a vampire talefrom the point of view of our heroine, Bella Swan. In the film, Bella, played by KristenStewart, leaves her home in Phoenix, Arizona to live with her estranged father in thesmall town of Forks. Nestled within this small town is a coven of vampires, the Cullens, who pass themselves off as members of society; the children having enrolledin school, the elders being a housewife and doctor.

At the local school, Bella meets the youngest and prettiest Cullen, Edward (RobertPattinson), and their relationship is quickly established as a Mr Darcy and ElizabethBennet escapade.

We see the couple fall in love and form an unbreakable bond that stands the test offamily disapproval and a coven of enemy vampires.

Aside from the high-octane plot, the soundtrack does not disappoint with acclaimed groups Paramore and Blue October as prominent features.

More importantly Robert Pattinson himself donates a song of his own devising. ‘Twilight’ created the heart throbs of 2009 so look out for the next instalment, ‘NewMoon’, which hits our screens in November.

Well what’s to say? The number two shouldbe a warning of the imminent drivel you areabout to receive. Disney creates some wonderful masterpieces, don’t get me wrong,

but a sequel to a blockbuster movie always spells out a lack of freshideas.

‘Lion King II’ sees the return of a more mature Simba, his partner, Nala, along with a fresh new line of characters. Ignoring all of the dated musical montages, the basic gist of the film is that two lion cubs fromrival prides fall in love and are faced with overcoming the social barriersthat keep them apart. Sound familiar? It’s basically a lion strewn Romeoand Juliet with the occasional giggle at the crazy baboon and an insightinto the mind of rebellious children. All in all, it’s a typical kid’s flick. Forthose of you who don’t mind any of this, ‘The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride’is available at all good retailers.

From the makers of ‘Love Actually’ comes this60s-set piece of brilliance. ‘The Boat ThatRocked’ is an uplifting feature which is guaranteed to bring a smile to even the mosttrying, boring person.

Young Carl (Tom Surridge), our leading man, has been sent by hismother, (Emma Thompson) in an attempt to reform his character, to thepirate radio station headquarters on the Radio Rock ship. Here wemeet the rocking rebels: The Count, Angus, Midnight Mark and numerousothers including the fabulous Nick Frost as Dave. All is well onboard, love is in the air and the radio station has 25 million listeners. This happiness is soon fragmented. The 1960’s British Government has aproblem with liberation and freedom for its people and in a bid tosquash it, they make the renegade rockers illegal. A battle begins!Titanic connotations aside, ‘The Boat that Rocked’ is an excellent rompwith a fantastic sound track which will entice viewers of all ages. Youmust see this film! DVD release is the 28th of August.

Bon Jovi have had many hits over their 25 year reign including ‘Living on a Prayer’ and ‘Wanted Dead or Alive’.Their ultimate love song though has to be ‘Always’. It is aclassic song with great lyrics and meets the power ballad format, which everyone loves. With referencesfrom Romeo and Juliet and a Whitney Houston vibe, ‘Always’ is guaranteed to tell the one you love how muchthey really mean to you. Find Bon Jovi’s greatest hits inall good retailers.

This American lady has always out-performed just aboutany other female artist. With a career spanning 19 years,multi-talented Beyonce has had 13 top 10 singles in theUK alone. Her newest album ‘I am... Sasha Fierce’ is boiling over with hits. My particular favourite from thisalbum is ‘Single Ladies’. It has a catchy sound, great videoand is probably a message to all men out there to marrytheir partners. Beyonce herself got happily married lastyear to music impresario Jay-Z.

With tour dates announced this year, Michael Jackson issure to see a revival in sales. The mega star turns 51 in2009 and has spent over 40 years in the spotlight, startingin his family band The Jackson Five. They had many hitswhich are constant classics on radio stations. During hissolo career, Michael Jackson had a massive nine numberones and eighteen top 10 hits. The song everyone remembers Michael for has to be ‘Thriller’. I’m not sure ifit’s the whole video horror story idea or if it’s the unusualsong but, whatever the case, the album ‘Thriller’ sold 28million copies worldwide and continues to sell, even now,26 years on.
