Hey Guys,

So we are getting a little more serious here at Teensoul and bringing you some info on an issue that is well hidden in Perth. Did you know that in Perth alone more than 4500 teens are homeless? This is a grim reality that we explore further this month.

We also have a wrap up of Off the Edge and an update on the aid trip the event helped fund from group member Kelly Saul. It sounds like they are having a great trip.

Speaking of Off the Edge, want to know more about the boys in the bands? Check out our story on Ticket 4 Two as they continue taking Perth by storm.

Plus there is much more for you to enjoy so thanks for reading and thanks for your continuing support for Teensoul Magazine: Perth’s newest independent teen mag for both guys and girls.

I first met the Ticket 4 Two boys at the 2010 Gozzy Rock band comp finals. As soon as I walked into the competition my attention was drawn to one guy. Reilly Craig was talking to nearly everyone and just moments later he took the stage as Ticket 4 Two’s front man.

Ticket 4 Two are three young guys from Armadale in Western Australia. Having only been together for just over a year and are already playing weekly gigs around Perth. From the moment I met 18 year old Reilly I could tell that music was his one passion.

Get Your tickets!BY Deanne Walker

Throughout 2010 this youthful trio have been making a splash on the altenative/indie pop-rock scene. They have recorded lots of original songs already, and their future aim is to record an album for release. The first thing that you notice when plugging into a Ticket 4 Two playlist is how easy they are to listen to.

Listening to their chilled out melodies, and simple catchy rhythms is really relaxing, and their music would make a good backdrop to any situation: a trip to the beach, having a BBQ with friends, or just reading a book a home. They unquestionably have a lot of talent between them, but they don’t let rock-star egos become a part of their sound like typical rock bands, which lets their pleasant harmonies and beautiful lyrics capture the attention of the listener.

The most recognisable feature of their sound is the vocals. The way to distinguish their sound from other chilled indie pop acts is lead singer Reilly Craig’s pleasant, soothing vocals that wash away anything that may be troubling you and let you slip into a relaxed daze, whilst bopping and singing along. All up, they are a great way to relax and are worth a listen.

Check them out on myspace @ www.myspace.com/ticket4two

“At the moment I’m not working full time so I’m pretty much committed to doing just this all day, every day,” Reilly Craig told me. “This is my life”.

While watching their set I couldn’t help but notice the bass player, or more accurately, his hair. Until I learnt his name Rhys Voysey was “the boy with the hair”. He came on board a little bit later after Ticket 4 Two was formed.

Right at the back of the stage sat 16 year old Jacob Norman, the drummer. When I met him he didn’t say a lot but I guess banging on a drum kit can be worth much more than any spoken word.

One of the first things I noticed about Ticket 4 Two was that as well as having that sweet appearance that makes the girls melt they matched it with an awesome sound that appeals to these boys.

Teensoul held the first ever Off the Edge Festival at HQ in Leederville. It was a night of music, skating, dancing and of course glow sticks! We started the night with some tunes mixed by our awesome DJ Dubz before the GMTA pro skate team took to the HQ skate park. To finish off the night our two bands, What Matters and Ticket 4 Two drew in the biggest crowd for the night and rocked the stage. I want to say thanks to all those involved in making the event a success. All up we managed to raise $700 for 17 year old Kelly Saul and her team to help their charity work in India. Keep an eye out because a second festival will be announced soon!

Namashkar Everybody, Upnee Kemon Achen? We have arrived safe and sound at Ruma Abedona Hospice. We had long flights, Kelly nearly lost her passport and tickets in Austra-lia, Anthea was stopped at every point and checked for explosives. Then there were some issues at the Indian customs desk, Aimee was frisked and poor Tom and Amanda were separated from the group on different flights; but in the end, we made it.

Three fights broke out at the Indian airport customs desk and stray cats wandered around like they owned the place. The smell was not as bad as we had anticipated but what it lacked in smell it made up for in heat. As early as three in the morning the humidity was 80 per cent and the temperature was 29 degrees. We spent our first day at the hospice resting, getting to know the hospice volunteers and practicing our Bengali

That evening we walked to the Rishra night markets, shopped for sari’s and ate chapatti and dim (egg) roll from the street. No stomach issues yet!

10

We caught a rickshaw back to the hospice and Kelly got a bug stuck in her eye. Had a good sleep apart from the girls having a run in with an exploding fan above their heads, fortunately no injuries. Thats all for now! Just remember no news is good news. So if you don’t hear from us we are having a great time. Amanda, Anthea and Kelly went on home visits and as usual getting lost along the way. Temperature reached 31 degrees which would have been bearable had the humidity not been at 99%. We visited a patient that Kelly had been to during our first week. She has lymphatic cancer and was suffering from extreme swelling in her legs causing her toes to bleed. Mamon the nurse left medication and supplies with the family to help keep her comfortable and help them manage. We are heading to the seaside for the weekend, to Chandipur which is a 4.5 hour journey, taking us over the border of West Bengal.

We are almost half way through our journey, but still have lots more exciting experiences to come.

Love, Tom, Aimee, Anthea, Amanda & Kelly

Extinction Sucks follows the real life adventures of two best friends from Perth in Western Australia. Conservation duo Aleisha Caruso and Ashleigh Young are a far cry from the khaki-clad, safari suit wearing scientists one usually associates with the word -’conservation’, and they’ll go to any lengths to bamboozle people into parting with their money to help endangered animal species around the world.

The girls bring us face to face with the animals, allowing us to get to know eachindividual one they work with.

Of games you can find on the web, most

popular are “Flash Games”. These are the

types of games made using Adobe Flash

using highly vibrant ‘vector graphics’ and

‘action script coding’. Vector graphics

are mathematical points in computer

space defining lines, shapes, curves and

polygons making them different from

raster or pixel graphics.

tecH inFo

Raster are the graphics you see on your

television or in the arcade, they are small

dots or pixels that will make up the

graphics. Vectors are different as they do

not use pixels. This is essentially what

flash games are; vectors that can be

resized to fit any computer.

Action script is a child of the ECMA

script, a type of dynamic programming

language that is object-oriented, such

as a playable character or a collectable

power up. It contains all the appropriate

information that will make these features,

or packages that will make them do what

they are supposed to do in the logical

aspects of the game. You would have to

very cool computer whiz to know all this

stuff!

...

The main advantage in flash games is that they are free and we all like free stuff right?

Web games have become so popular they seem to have invaded the internet big time. Everywhere you look there are flashing advertisements for newly created games trying to persuade you to play them. If you’re lucky enough to get a supa high score they even offer a reward. But are these games the best way to challenge your mind?

social GaMinGWith console games, you would have to buy the console, the controller, the game and any other accessories, while some Multiplayer Online games charge a subscription fee or trade real world cash for in-game currency. But with Flash Games, the players don’t have to worry too much about purchasing expensive equipment that will eventually be traded in for the latest hardware or sit in a spare room gathering dust when it becomes old and out of date.

Whilst flash games are available to most people this very freedom can lead to a person becoming very addicted to game play. Since anyone is able to access these games at any time, you are more likely to play the games more often instead of finishing your homework or other important stuff!

Such social networks like Facebook which provide flash games like Farmville give you the impression you are playing with your friends but you never see them. You are always just trying to create the best farm and get so caught up with the game that you lose spending “real” time with your friends. so next time you are thinking of checking out these games, make sure you don’t get too hooked up in the gaming world!

Home is where the heart is

HoMe is WHere tHe Heart is

Imagine having no mobile phone, no internet or no iPod.

Pretty bad hey? Now imagine having no place to sleep,

no daily meals and not even a proper pair of shoes. This

is a reality for more than 35000 youth across Australia.

Homelessness doesn’t mean they literally have no

home. They do have homes but sadly they are not safe

enough to live in.

Joondalup Youth Support Services is a Perth based

organisation aimed at decreasing these numbers. JYSS’

Organisation Development Manager Jamie Moore says

there are many reasons why an estimated 4200 young

people are left out on the Perth streets each night.

true storY

My name is ***** and I thought I would

share with you my experience as a 17

year old, aboriginal, homeless boy. I

have been homeless since December

last year and since then I have moved

from one crisis hostel to the next and

have only recently been placed back with

my family. When I became homeless

I was on the edge of an emotional

breakdown, cried my self to sleep at

night, felt lonely isolated and angry.

It’s very disturbing that so many young

people have nowhere to go and are not

getting enough support.

24

“It could be due to family breakdown, overcrowding

in households, mental health issues or even

drug & alcohol issues of the parents and

not necessarily the young people,”

he says. “So many young people

are homeless as there is a lack of

services available to them in the

area and across the country, but

most significantly there is a lack

of beds.”

JYSS provide a lot of temporary

housing around Perth and run

different programs to support these

youth now as well as helping them to

build better futures.

If you want to know more about this issue visit www.jyss.org.au

Youth homelessness will only increase

and there are not enough services

out there to support the youth with

accommodation and food services for

starving youth. It is a requirement of

Centrelink to have a stable address;

however for people like me who

don’t have an address, they seem to

cancel payments on a regular basis. I

believe that the leading cause in youth

homelessness is family breakdown.

Peer pressure is also a big factor

amongst youth with pressure placed

on us to escape reality with drugs and

alcohol.

thanks to local services i am now completing year ten, linked with a mentor and

living back with my family. What about the other 4236 homeless youth in W.a?

Parkour is a physical discipline of moving through any environment and conquering any obstacle that’s in your way. This is both a physical and mental discipline. To some it is even a way of life! Parkour is quickly gaining popularity across Australia with more than 4500 members on the Australian Parkour Association website and almost 100000 on the American Parkour website.

I was first introduced to Parkour about 3 years ago by a friend who showed me a YouTube video. I was astounded by the moves and was instantly drawn to the sport. Soon after my friends and I started experimenting with some of the moves we had seen.

Some say Parkour is dangerous but anyone who practices the sport - known as Tracuers knows their own limits. The Media has linked serious injuries and even deaths to the sport due to people attempting to jump from high places such as from roof to roof but roof jumping is not encouraged by the sport.

If you are thinking of starting Parkour I recommend it. You can start out like I did and just watch videos on Parkour practice and safety. You can also attend Parkour classes, which maybe a better option. You can find your nearest class with a simple Google search and dont forget to do a YouTube search to see the amazing sights with your own eyes.

parkour can save lives?According to the Australian Parkour Association it is about helping people. With the training and knowledge we get from Parkour, we become useful and can help others. The range of situations in which we become useful and helpful is wide. We can help save someone stuck inside a burning building. Or help another traceur to progress over a wall so that traceur can then become useful. We need to share with each other what we learn, ways to train, and useful concepts
