Basketball  is  one  of  the most  popular  and widely  viewed  sports  in  the world. It is a team sport.

There  are  two  teams  of  5  players who  try  to  score  points  against  each other by placing a ball through a 10 foot high hoop (the goal) under organized rules. Points are scored by throwing the ball through the basket from above the hoop. The team that has the most points at the end of the match wins, but the overtime may be issued if there’s a tie. When playing, players must bounce the ball  off  the  ground when  they  pass  it  between  team mates  and when  they throw  it at the hoop.  If there  is a foul, a player who makes  it  is penalized and free throws are issued for the other team.

Through  time  basketball  has  developed  and  it  involves many  common techniques of  shooting, passing and dribbling, as well as  the players’ position and  offence  and  defence  strategies.  Competitive  basketball  is  carefully regulated but numerous variations of basketball have developed for casual play. In some countries, basketball is also a popular spectator sport.

While  competitive  basketball  is  primarily  an  indoor  sport  played  on  a basketball  court,  less  regulated  variations  played  outdoors  have  become increasingly popular among both inner and city rural groups.   DICTIONARY: a tie = when both teams have the same score  (= izenačenje) a foul = an action that is against the rules of the game   (= favl) penalized = punished   (=kaznovan)

Charity means helping people in need. For example, people who want to help people infected with AIDS join charity organisations and help raise money. They organise charity concerts, drama plays, auctions and other kinds of events. For instance, the most worldwide known concert is Live Aid (its newer name is Live 8). This is a concert that happens in two major cities every year. A lot of famous bands like Queen, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Pink Floyd and other famous musicians and singers played there. The price of the tickets is quite low for a concert so big. The money gathered from the ticket sales is then sent to the charity organisations and from there it goes to Africa. I think that charity is a good thing because you never know when you might get ill with AIDS or some other disease in the future and, then, charitable actions might just save your life.

by Urban Završnik, 9.a What goes around comes around! Everybody has something to give to those who haven’t got anything. Maybe you are going to need help some day. I think that charity is a very good thing. You can help people in many ways. In Slovenia, there are some concerts to raise money for poor people. One of them is called The Call of Chairty (Klic dobrote). You can donate clothes, toys, school supplies, etc. Another way of being charitable is by giving blood so it can be used for operations or in case of traffic accidents in which injured people lose a lot of blood. You can also do charity work by helping older or disabled people. Last year, I was a member of a volunteer group called KIDD (Kar imamo, drugim damo). We went to CIRIUS and to the Senior Citizens’ Home. We had a lot of fun meeting them, the young friends from CIRIUS. They are just like us – happy, funny, but because of their physical appearance, people do not accept them. I realized there that it is not all about what we look like, it’s about who we really are. And for the end I would just like to say: It can happen to all of us! We can be left without a house, food, love, family and even life. Let us stick together!!

I think that the word charity is sometimes overrated, because some of the charity organizations are exploiting people. For example, when people give their money to different organizations, only a small percent of that money goes to people that need it. Organizations use the other part for themselves. I know a few charity organizations and sometimes I also give money to them, for example, to the Red Cross, or in church. Some people have a lot of money but they selfishly keep it for themselves and never give any of it for poor people. They just buy stupid things. But there are also some famous people that help others. For example, I know of a concert called USA for Africa. Forty-three singers volunteered to sing a song for people in Africa and with that song they collected money. I think that people aren’t so charitable. They should help more people and give more money to organizations. Because ony in that way we can stop hunger in the world. I think that charity is a good thing.

*** FACT FILE – did you know? *** In 1985 a group of famous singers recorded a hit single “We are the World”. The song quickly became very popular and the singers used the money they got from the song to help poor people in Africa, especially in Ethiopia. Below are the lyricsof the song and you can listen to the song simplyclicking on this link      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ne7fPpxAnuM

Lyrics:  There comes a time when we heed a certain call When the world must come together as one There are people dying Oh, and it's time to lend a hand to life The greatest gift of all We can't go on pretending day by day That someone, somewhere will soon make a change We're all a part of God's great big family And the truth You know love is all we need (CHORUS) We are the world, we are the children We are the ones who make a brighter day so let's start giving There's a choice we're making we're saving our own lives It's true we'll make a better day just you and me

Well, send 'em you your heart so they know that someone cares And their lives will be stronger and free As God has shown us by turning stone to bread And so we all must lend a helping hand (REPEAT CHORUS) When you're down and out there seems no hope at all But if you just believe there's no way we can fall Well, well, well, let's realize that a change can only come When we stand together as one (REPEAT CHORUS SEVERAL TIMES)

I will present three of the largest passenger aircrafts in the world. The first one is the Airbus 380. Today, it is the largest passenger plane. The next is the Boeing

747. It is a little smaller than the Airbus 380. The largest plane in the world, however, is Antonov 225. But it is used only for transporting cargo.

Airbus 380: Airbus 380 (A380) is the largest passenger plane in the world. It can fly with about 850 passengers. Its maximum range is about 15,200 km. It is 73 meters long, 24 meters high and its wingspan is about 80 meters. A380 needs a speed of around 320 kph to take-off. Its Maximum speed in the air is 1,020 kph, but its travel speed is 945 kph. The speed for landing mustn’t be higher than 300 kph. Its maximum take-off weight is 500 tons. Its home factory is in France and elsewhere because A380 is an international project. The first flight of A380 was on 27th April 2005. The first commercial flight was in 2007 from Singapore to Sydney. The flight lasted 4 hours and 45 minutes. About 500 people flew at that flight. Companies which have bought the A380 are Qantas (Australia), Singapore Airlines (Singapore), Air France (French) and some others. It costs 295 million Euros.

Boeing 747: Boeing 747 or its nickname “Jumbo Jet” was the first wide-body plane in the world. Today it is the most famous plane in the world. It became known because it has a second floor which is used only for first-class passengers. But tickets for first class travelling are very expensive. Another reason why it became famous was because it was the first plane with 4 engines. It was the biggest plane in the world till 2007 when Airbus 380 took the lead. It can fly with about 570 passengers on board. Its maximum range is about 10,900km. It is 76 meters long, its wingspan is 70 meters and it is 20 meters high. B747 needs a take-off speed of about 300 kph. Its travel height is 11,300 meters, depending on traffic. Its travel speed in air is 900 kph. Its landing speed is 280 kph. Its maximum take-off weight is 440 tons. Its home factory is in Seattle, USA. In some configurations the B747 can fly from New York to Hong Kong non-stop. This is a third of Earth's circumference. In 1989, the Boeing 747 airline Qantas flew non-stop for 20 hours and 9 minutes. It flew over a distance of 18,001 km from London to Sydney, but without passengers and crew (cargo flight). The B747 costs about 200 million American dollars.

Antonov 225: Antonov 225 (in the picture) is the biggest plane in the world, but it transports just cargo, not people. There is only one such aeroplane in the world. But engineers are thinking of building another one. The wingspan of the Antonov 225 is 90 meters, 10 meters wider than that of A380. It is 19 meters high. Its maximum take-off weight is 650 tons. For that weight it needs 3,500 meters of runway. Its maximum speed is 850 kph, but its travel speed is 750 kph. The flying range with full tanks is 14,000 km. If it is fully loaded, however its range is only 4,000 km. Its maximum travel height is 10,000 meters but this depends on traffic. It is the first plane with 6 engines. When engineers were rebuilding it the aeroplane got stronger engines and that cost 20 million Euros. Its home factory is in Russia.

Kamnik is a beautiful medieval town. It was mentioned for the first time in 1061 when it was only a market where people met. It became a town later, in 1220. It was formed where two rivers, the Kamniška Bistrica and the Nevljica, meet.  Kamnik was the capital of the Kranjska or Carniola region for some time, and later it was – together with Ljubljana ‐ the most influential county town. As a medieval town it started to fall apart when the traffic way with the vaTuhinjska Dolina was stopped.
