The Panama Canal
The U.S. wants a quicker route to California.
In the late 1800s France will try to build a canal in Panama but will fail.
When Roosevelt takes office he promotes the idea of building the canal.

Here's where the Roosevelt Corollary comes in ...
In 1903 Panama is under Columbian control and will not allow U.S. access to the canal zone.
The U.S. stirs up independence feelings among the Panamanians.
With a Naval ship stationed in the waters outside of Colon, Panama the U.S. assists the Panamanians in achieving their independence.

The United States immediately recognizes Panama as an independent nation and draws up an agreement allowing the U.S. access to the area for a fee of $250,000 per year.
Within months work begins on the canal.

Difficulties of the Canal...
Illness workers suffer from Yellow Fever, Malaria, dysentery, typhoid and Plague
Discovers that the Mosquito is responsible for Yellow Fever and begins tactics to kill mosquitos
Conditions many workers will be injured and killed in the building of the canal due to conditions and dangers working with explosives

It is estimated that 22,000 laborers died between 1881 and 1889, the French period.
American death toll was officially 5,609
The total estimated human cost to 27,609.

Because of the changes in elevation the Canal requires the use of locks
The building of the canal was completed in 1913 (10 years).
The Canal is still in use today.
In 1999, the U.S. turned over control of the Canal Zone to Panama.
