I chose this TED talk because I like how some people chase their dreams. I love to see how people build things in a different way. A way that we cannot imagine here in Belgium. This TED talk really blew my mind because we don’t know bamboo as a building material ,certainly not for houses. It appears that bamboo, is very strong. It has the tensile strength of steel and the compressive strength of concrete. It’s also very light to build with. It’s a material that grows very fast and it’s earthquake resistant. This is a new way of building homes, actually no because they did this already for decades but the buildings almost all vanished because bamboo didn’t last that long. What has changed? They treat the bamboo before using it so it can resist water and wind and much more. It’s a building tool that is very elegant and beautiful to see.

This really inspired me because it looks like an art to create something like this and when a house is done building the view is mind blowing.

Here you can see that they need to follow the curves from the bamboo itself so every bamboo stick is different from the next one. Which makes it very challenging to find the right pieces and to create something as one piece . These projects are completed in Mali so I hope I can visit one day a building like this because breath taking it is.

I chose this TED talk because I’m very interested in architecture. From houses to different weird architectural construction. Marc talks about the architecture in the past 30 years, he is a very fluent speaker and is fun to listen to because he tells things about the thoughts of people. He’s very passionate how he talks about his TED talk. He explains how people changed thinking about buildings over 30 years. Social media has changed the connection between people but also gave an advantage for architects. They can use ideas / feelings and emotions from people to create new buildings. The use of Instagram, twitter and other social media made it possible to come closer with the people. The architects from the next building below, used all those social media to create a certain feeling of appreciation for the building even before it was there. They managed to “manipulate” the peoples mind and showed how it could be when the building was finished.

From pictures made for the social media platforms to the way it was when the building was opened.(below), people knew what they could expect and lived in the moment. They were not shocked by the new forms or materials, because it was already a part of the community (through social media).

It the past this was very difficult because people didn’t expect something completely new. Something extraordinary or shocking. People were going to talk about how ugly the building was, but now all that has changed. Now architects can create a show around the building before it is even build and how the building should be in the society. A building doesn’t need to be beautiful but loveable.The buildings don’t reflect the society the shape our society. He says we need to work together to create better buildings a better society and a better world.

Personal opinion

In my point of view this was a very good TED presentation he explained everything and showed many examples. Social media is the future for architects to create a feeling about something that doesn’t yet exist. That very interesting because sometimes buildings don’t fit in a society and through social media people can give opinions and criticisms.

TED3: Avi Reichental: What’s next in 3D printing.

This TED talk is about 3D printing. What got my attention was that I didn’t always understood the person that good. Probably because English was not his native language. Also that he doesn’t look to the public but just runs around in circles on the stage. Besides that this was also an inspirational and interesting TED talk. What new things are possible with 3D printing. Products like building a suit for people who are paralysed in their legs. Suits that help them to walk again . Can be made possible with 3D printing and with a much lower cost. Making new unique designs for leg prostheses. Products who can be sent to space. The possibilities are endlessly which inspired me and shocked me. Because I didn’t knew how far this technology already stood. It’s difficult to imagine how all this works because this is all new technology, probably in 20 years all this will be normal. But for now it’s something to look forward to. It will be possible for all people to make their own fantasies. Making shoes will be possible with no restrictions attached.

Such as these above, also made by a 3D printer with a unique design. If we look to the past this will be something revolutionary for the world. Something that will keep growing over time. And I’m curious what the future still holds for us.
