In June 1963, he joined ABC Radio News as a correspondent for its daily Flair Reports program, where one of his first assignments was to cover the President Kennedy assassination from Washington, D.C. He moved to television in 1966 when reporting on the Vietnam War. REPORT TO THE KUNM COMMUNITYby Richard S. Towne, KUNM General Manager

Do you like magic? Wanna see amagic trick? Wanna know how it works? It’s easy and it won’t take but a minute.Go to the cover of this very programguide, the one that’s in your hands rightnow. Find the word ZOUNDS! on the

over. Slowly, but carefully look just below the exclamationpoint and see if you can see the little letter R in the circle.

Did you find it? If not, I’ll give you a hint. Its about aninch from the top and an inch from the left side of the cover. Now look again. Still there? Okay, now close your eyes, wait a month, and look again next month for the same littlecircle and the same letter R. It will magically disappear fromnext month’s program guide. In fact it will disappear forever, never to be seen again at KUNM. Go ahead and take a lastfond look at our little circle R and this will be the last yousee of it.

Diablo! Qué májico, you say. What can be going onhere? This story itself is magically enchanting. The littlecircle R (of course) is the symbol that shows the wordZounds! is a registered trademark for the KUNM programguide. We’ve been calling our monthly program guideZounds! since just about forever. Eleven years ago, therewas no circle R there. KUNM hosted a national conferenceof community radio practitioners and we put a copy ofZounds into everybody’s conference tote bag so they couldfully experience the wonderful world of KUNM program-ming.

Then about six months later, we noticed the nameZounds was popping up all over public radio – as the nameof a public radio website in Philadelphia and again in anewsletter from New York. Evidently, some of the peoplewho came to the conference in New Mexico liked the nameZounds well enough to take it as their own. So we trade-marked it. Good and proper, with the help of UNM legalstaff and everything. We paid the fee and put the circle R onour program guide, right under the exclamation point, as if toprotect the name from prowling marauders.

Time passed and all was well with Zounds! About fiveyears later, we paid the US Copyright Office a couple ofhundred dollars to renew the life of our circle R. We got to

keep it another five years and it looked so good and officialright there on our program guide. Everyone was happy, lifewas serene, and the name Zounds! was secure. More timepassed.

Then, in late summer of 2005, an e-mail arrived thatwould just about change everything for our circle R. Thewriter was cordial and worked for an online music equip-ment retailer called ZZOUNDS.com. Uh-Oh!, I thought. Our little circle R has a sibling and never told us! No, thiswas not what the letter said. What I read was most interest-ing. The man from ZZOUNDS.ORG is named Pete andPete cordially explained that ZZOUNDS.COM was asuccessful enterprise and in the course of a little research toprotect the integrity of the ZZOUNDS.COM kingdom, discovered that the circle R for our Zounds, lived at KUNM.

Pete wondered if he could adopt our little circle R andlet it live at ZZOUNDS.COM. He didn’t really want thename Zounds! That, he said, we could keep forever. He justwanted to buy the registered trademark so he could protectthe ZZOUNDS.COM name forever. Pete was willing to giveus $7,500 for our little circle R. I had to think. What to do?What to Do? Eventually, I wrote to Pete and said no. Wewon’t accept your money. But I had looked at theZZOUNDS.COM empire to see if it would be a good placefor our circle R to live. I noticed some pretty fancy record-ing equipment, including a really pretty digital mixing consolemade by Yamaha at the ZZOUNDS.COM website.

This only reminded me how much we needed a newdigital mixing console in KUNM’s recording studio and howwe were constantly repairing the old console or having towork around failing parts of the old console. But that shinynew console was priced at over $20,000 and was waybeyond our fiscal means. More time went by, but then, as ifby magic, an idea came into my head. ZZOUNDS.COMand Yamaha are business partners. ZZOUNDS.COM buysYamaha digital mixing consoles all the time.ZZOUNDS.COM buys from Yamaha at a quantity whole-sale discount price, not the $20,000+ retail price listedonline! Maybe, just maybe, instead of the $7,500 that Petehad offered, we could actually get us a digital mixing consolefrom Yamaha instead! My mind raced.

More time went by. One day, I finally called Pete at thenumber he gave in his e-mail. He wasn’t there so I left him amessage. “Hi Pete, it’s me and I am calling about the circle Rthing you were asking about. Can you call me?” Pete did call(after some more time went by of course) and he was reallynice. I told him I had an idea and could I tell him about myidea and he said he really wanted to hear about it. I told himabout our circle R. He told me about ZZOUNDS.COM. I toldhim about KUNM and our diverse music programming andour commitment to live and local music of all types. He toldme he lived in Boston or some such place and he reallywished there was a radio station that played all kinds of musicand that was kind to musicians.

Then I popped the question to Pete. Could you, wouldyou, won’t you please, talk to your good good friends atYamaha to see if our circle R came to live atZZOUNDS.COM, could that shiny new digital mixingconsole at Yamaha come live at KUNM in our recordingstudio? Pete was happy and loved the idea. “I’ll have to askmy boss,” Pete said. Pete told me his boss was in China orsome such place for another week but Pete liked the idea ofhelping our KUNM so much he was excited to tell his bossas soon as he got home to ZZOUNDS.COM. And sureenough, Pete’s boss liked the idea so much he told Pete togo ahead and talk to the people at Yamaha.

Lo and behold, the people at Yamaha loved the idea aswell. The next day, everyone’s lawyers came to talk it over. And they acted wisely and nobly as lawyers often do. “Wecan make this work!” they proclaimed (in just under sixpages). Soon, dignitaries from all sides were signing theproclamation that our circle R would live atZZOUNDS.COM, and the shiny new digital mixing consoleat Yamaha would move into our music recording studio andhelp us bring live music to you on the radio. And the nameZOUNDS! will stay right here on your favorite radiostation’s monthly program guide.

I’ll always love our little circle R and the magic that it’sgiven us while it was here. But I can always visit with ourlittle circle R at ZZOUNDS.COM. And we’ll all live happilyever after. The End.

Our shiny new digital mixing console!

Dear TAL fan,

I’m thrilled to be able to share background on“Teenage Embed” with you.

I’m often asked how I met Hyder Akbar. It wasDecember 2001, and I was in the Bay Area, reporting a story for The New York Times Magazineabout the teenage son of the legendary Afghancommander Abdul Haq. Haq had recently beenexecuted by the Taliban.

One morning, I called an old friend of Haq’s namedSaid Fazel Akbar. He said that he planned to returnto Afghanistan soon, and that his 16-year-old sonHyder was eager to go with him.

I’d already met several Afghan-American teenagersthat week. Most were indifferent about going back— it seemed like something very far in the future,or for fathers or uncles, not for them. So I wascurious about Hyder. We arranged to speak on aSaturday morning. “Wait until noon,” Said FazelAkbar advised. “He sleeps in.”

That first time I spoke with Hyder, I just wanted tostay on the phone with him more. He was engagingand funny and smart. At the end of theconversation, I mentioned that I was also a radioproducer, and that if he did wind up going toAfghanistan, I wondered if he might want to take atape recorder with him.

Several months later, in April 2002, I was back inCalifornia, checking out Hyder’s U2 CDs and thepunching bag in his garage, hearing about hispreparations for his trip.

I was showing him how to use the recorder, teaching him about getting ambience, about whatmakes a scene. He was teaching me aboutAfghanistan, about warlords and foreign influenceand internal politics. And he was also teaching meabout his family, about their bravery and generosityand their fierce commitment to their country. It’s anexchange that’s continued for almost two yearsnow. It was the beginning of one of the mostrewarding collaborations of my professional life.

This story is the result of hundreds of hours ofwork — work that took place in locations rangingfrom a Humvee in rural Afghanistan to a desk inBrooklyn, NY. Public Radio International andChicago Public Radio® make it possible for anindependent producer like me to bring you anextraordinary story like this. Here’s an audio clip. You can hear the full hour of “Teenage Embed,” aswell as Hyder’s first story, “Come Back toAfghanistan,” on This American Life’s website,www.thisamericanlife.org.

All best,Susan BurtonProducer

Wednesday, February 17 p.m. Under a Southern Moon: Blues Queens and TentShows. Host David Holt and The Jim Cullum Jazz Band are

joined by award-winning actorVernel Bagneris and acclaimed jazzsinger Topsy Chapman for amusic-filled profile of the blackvaudeville tent shows of the early1900s. Long before Mamie Smithhad the first hit blues record in1921, blues shouters in travelingtent shows stirred things up in theSouth, bringing vaudeville to blackaudiences in small towns below theMason-Dixon Line. As this pro-gram artfully illustrates, a typicaltent show included a hot rhythmband, chorus dancers, comedysketches, and the occasionalsideshow oddity. But the headlinerwas always the blues queen whoclosed the show, and the biggeststars were Ma Rainey and herprotégé, Bessie Smith. Topsy

Chapman’s style would make those divas proud, as Holt,Bagneris, Cullum, and company spotlight the blues queensand tent shows from the South’s back roads.

Sunday, February 1911 a.m. The Undiscovered Explorer: Imagining York.

Celebrated actor Danny Glover illuminatesone of American history’s best-kept secrets inthis riveting hour-long profile of York, explorer William Clark’s slave and the onlyAfrican American member of the Lewis andClark Expedition. York’s story is both heroicand tragic. He began life as Clark’s childhood

playmate, but at age 12, their relationship became that ofslave and master. On the expedition, York experienced a rarelevel of freedom and equality, working shoulder to shoulderwith white men. On returning home, however, the othermembers of the Corps of Discovery were welcomed withgifts and praise. York was plunged back into bondage andsubservience, which ultimately shattered his life. The detailsof his life are based on fragmentary evidence in the writingsand stories of others, always nuanced by the social era inwhich they were created. He has been characterized as avaliant hero, an insolent and sulky slave, and a happy, dancing darkie. Today, artists and historians continue to givewords to this man. Poetry, opera, and rap — all in York’s“voice” — are being performed as part of the bicentennialcelebration of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. By looking athow York is portrayed through history, “The UndiscoveredExplorer” opens the door to many questions about Americansociety and about how history is recorded, remembered, andcreated.
