GEOLOGY*

The geological succession is as folloflfs*-

Younger diabase.Older diabase. - Intrusive contact.Argillite - (Age relation uncertain)Quartzite.Gritty Quartzite.Pebbly quartzite.Basal conglomerate.

Only one small area of basal type conglomerate was found, (on claim 58398). This consists of a massive rock with little or no bedding, and small boulders of granite varying up to l foot in diameter, embedded in an arkosic to pebbly matrix. Several boulders of a dioritic composition were also noted.

Quartzites were subdivided into quartzite, gritty quartzite, and pebbly quartzite, depending on presence and size of quartz particles cr pebbles. Grains of quartz up to one tenth inches mark the gritty quartzite. Pebbles up to ^ inch scattered throughout a gritty groundmass characterize the pebbly quartzite. The three quartzite types underlj most of the claim group.

Two relatively small areas of argillite were found. This is a fine grained grey to black rock showing both bedding and well marked cleavage. The position of the argillite in the geological succession is uncertain. A considerable thickness of argillite is to be seen overlying the basal conglomerate on Whiskey Lake to the east.

A Two ages of diabase occur In this area. The older quartz diabase type is similar to the so called Nipissing diabase seen elsewhere. It is usually greenish due to a development of chlorite. This diabase appears to follow the general strike of the sediments and therefore may have been introduced as sill-like bodies. The younger diabase cuts across the strike of all other rocks. It is fresher in appearance, lacks the chlotite alteration of the older type, and in places appears to have a more basic composition, approaching that of a gabbro. It still retains the typical diabase texture however.STRUCTURE!

Dip of the sediments averages 20O to the west. A small folded structure therefore tends to produce local large variations in strike. The overall trend of the sediments is north-south. Jointing of the quartzite is well developed in places and often results in cliff-like faces.

A right hand fault trending east-west has offset the sediments in the v/est part of the group. Because of the shallow sedimentary dip only a small amount of fault movement produces large scale offsetting. The horizontal displacement in this case appears to be 350 feet. This fault may continue to the east between the two peninsulas on claims 58398 and 58397.

MINERALIZATION?

Radioactivity associated with minor amounts of pyrite was found in the pebbly quartzite underlying the two peninsulas in the centre of the group. Radioactive outcrops are generally somewhat rusty due to pyrite oxidation. If the fault postulated on the west side of the group continues eastward, it may have had some influence In concentrating the radioactivity in this area,CONCLUSION'S;

1. Radioactivity in the quartwites appears to depend on pebble size and/or pyrite mineralization.

2. Further development in the form of trenching or drilling is recommended on the radioactive zone. The possible fault between the two peninsulas may be the loci for radioactive mineral concentration. This could be checked by drilling.

Dear SirsYou may recollect that in 1956 I was in charge of an Ontario

Department of Mines Field Party carrying out geological mapping in,

Townships 137 and 133 in the mining division of Sudbury. During the

preparation of the manuscript maps and ropfcrt (E obtained cone information

from your office on drilling carried out to the went of Batty Lake in

Township 137. The information on the enolored sketch wae taken from a

company map*At present preparation of the printed report la in progress

and there are some points which require clarification-if pocsible.t

vith reference to the holes within the Whitefish Location Y,352

collars labelled TE 2,T 13, and TE 10 also ooour on the main showing on

claims 58156 and 58157I have summarised information on the location, azimuth, plunge,

length and mineraliead sections for holes TE15 , T2 \ - t T 19 ,T 20, and

T 21. I am not olear whether the hole IE 16 is actually the hole labelled

T 1C on the map. I have no data at all on TE 14.

From data in the assessment files I have seen able to confirm

all the holes shown on the showing in olalae 58156 and 7* Wore the holes

with the same numbers on th* Whitefish Location ever drilled? Also I have

no information on holes T17 and T 18 in the southern part of the location

l am well aware that this work was carried out a long time ago

and that probably you will be unable to help .In thie event we will Just
