Analysis documents the useof fuel trims and oxygensensor behavior to deter-mine if the misfire activityis ignition, engine mechan-ical or fuel related. Part 1of our series focused onignition-related misfires.Here, we’ll focus on fuel-related misfires.We will address this

from the viewpoint of moments in time to offer adeeper understanding of these concepts. As I mentioned in the last article, the first step is to visualize these failures from the beginning. Picturethat a fuel-related misfire has occurred on a subjectvehicle. Through our initial diagnostics, we find thatit is a single cylinder misfire, and prior to failure,the pre-oxygen is switching and working as designed. The post-oxygen sensor is also working asdesigned and almost appears as a straight line whenlooked at per graphical data or a lab scope. This time we’ll use a 2008 Buick Lucerne as an

example. The figures from our scan tool will be usedto show the activity.

Figure 1 denoteshow the pre- andpost-oxygen sensorsmay look on a subjectvehicle prior to anytype of misfire-relatedactivity. Figure 2 denotes the

activity of the pre- andpost-oxygen sensors atthe initial point of fuel-related misfire activity.A close examinationshows the pre-oxygensensor went low, indicat-

ing that it saw oxygen in the exhaust stream at thevery moment the misfire activity occurred. The post-oxygen sensor went low, indicating how the vehiclewill have a tendency to run lean. Note that at the very point of failure, the short-

term fuel trim (STFT) will increase and, depending

on design and strategy of the system, will show impressive numbers for short term. After the processorhas acknowledged this, the resources of long-term fueltrim (LTFT) will work to get the short-term numbersback as close as possible to at or near zero. The end result is that after corrective action has taken place bythe processor, there will be a significant impact on thetotal fuel trim adaptives (ST + LT). This analysis isbased on a subject vehicle that has good fuel trim values to start with. A range of +/- 5% is optimal onmany systems today, but a range of +/- 10% may beacceptable. A great example is a vehicle that has a total correc-

tion of 15% prior to fault; you will have higher num-bers once fuel-related misfire activity occurs. I havefound that many vehicles with fuel-related misfire activity viewed after corrective action has taken placeper the processor will normally show numbers thatcan add to double digits. This difference is noted in

reference to ignition misfires thatshow numbers that may add tosingle digits. Now, let’s further our education

by taking a look at our case study,using a 1998 Pontiac Bonnevillewith multiple misfire activity.

1998 Pontiac Bonneville withMultiple Misfires Upon review of this failure, itshows that a STFT of -18% wasnoted and a LTFT of -20%, this isa total correction of -38%. SeeFigure 3. This is a significantimpact on the total fuel trim cor-rection (ST + LT). The misfireactivity appears to be on cylinders1, 2 and 3. See Figure 4. Based onservice records, we found that afuel pressure regulator wasreplaced prior to our analysis. The diaphragm inside the fuel

pressure regulator was noted tohave ruptured. This was evidentafter the vacuum line was discon-nected from the fuel pressure regu-lator. There was seepage that couldbe seen prior to pulling the vacu-um line off. The engine vacuum had drawn

fuel in the crankcase of the engineand the oil was saturated withgasoline. When we took the dip-stick out, oil literally ran off of thedipstick tube, offering some proofthat the oil was diluted. You couldalso smell gasoline on the dipsticktube. We have found a resource online

with misfire software; go towww.acemisfire.com for more information on it. We decided totry this software along with theFirstLook Engine Diagnostic Pulse Sensor. See Figures 5-7. According to online sources, by

mapping the pulse waves generat-ed by the engine, FirstLook (usedalong with your lab scope) can beused to quickly spot failures in theengine system. Also, by using a

trigger, you can spot these failuresto specific cylinders. On those carswith accessible fuel pressure regu-lators, FirstLook allows you to seethe pressure drop in the fuel railcaused by the injectors as they fire.We found it to be very helpful in

drawing a conclusion to repair. After the oil was changed on our

Bonneville, the fuel trims returnedto their normal operating parame-ters. This Pulling Codes case is now

Pocket DEF Tester Helps Meet Emission Standards

A pocket-sized DEF Tester from Thexton Manufacturing helps technicians meet 2010 EPADiesel Emission Standards for nitrogen oxide pollutants by assuring that dieselexhaust fluid is 32.5% urea and 67.5% de-ionized water. Thexton’s specificgravity-type Pocket DEF Tester, P/N THX109, features three floating balls,which measure the concentration of urea. If one ball floats, the concen-tration is less than 32.5%, too diluted and needs replacement. If twoballs float, the concentration is the proper 32.5%.
