About Storage Devices

Your computer needs to store information. If you did not have storage devices, than every time you turned the computer off you would erase the programs installed and files created.

There are several types of storage devices including: floppy disk drive optical drive flash drive hard drive

Floppy Disk Drive

A floppy disk drive is used to read and write floppy disks.

A floppy disk does not hold very much information, therefore most computers no longer have this device.

You may want to include a floppy disk drive with your computer if you have old files stored using a floppy disk.

Optical Drive

An optical drive is used to read and write data to a CD or DVD.

An optical drive should have a fast burning speed so that it can create CDs and DVDs quickly.

Flash Drive

A flash drive is a device that contains flash memory that is used to read and write data.

A flash drive is gaining in popularity because it is small, portable, inexpensive, and has a large storage capacity.

Hard Drive

A hard drive is used to store programs, user settings, and files.

You will want a computer that has a large hard drive especially if storing photos, music, or video files.

CPU stands for Central Processing Unit.

The CPU is like the brains of the computer. It executes instructions,

performs calculations, and makes logical decisions.

A CPU with a fast processing speed will enhance computer performance.

ResolutionThe number of pixels on the display.

The higher the resolution the better the quality.

Pixel Pitch The distance between pixels.The shorter the distance the better the quality.

Contrast RatioThe difference in light intensity between white and black.

The higher the contrast ratio, the better the quality.

Viewing AngleMaximum angle at which the picture is good quality.

The higher the degree, the better the quality.

Response RateThe amount of time it takes the pixels to change color.

The quicker the response rate, the better the quality.

BrightnessThe amount of light produced by the display.

The brighter the display, the better the quality.

Graphics Card

The graphics card is a circuit board or chipset on the motherboard.

Its function is to display an image on the monitor.

The picture quality will be better with a graphics card that has lots of RAM and a fast GPU.

Sound Card

The sound card is a circuit board or chipset on the motherboard that is in charge of recording and playing sound.

The sound card is called DAC or a digital to analog converter because this device transfers analog signals such as sound waves into digital signals in the form of binary code.

Most people only need a basic sound card, however gamers and musicians may require a multiple channel device.
