DAILY news 2018

Vaidya Rajesh KotechaSecrectary

Ministry of AYUSHGovernment of India

Iam happy to extend my warmest greetings to all participants of the Wellness India 2018 expo

and the co-located Krishi India 2018 expo at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi during 20-22 August 2018.

AYUSH amalgamates various medical streams such as Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy.

As Hon’ble Prime Minister of India stated, that the time for a health revolution under the aegis of Ayurveda is ripe. Ayurveda can play an important role in treating diseases related to drastic changes in lifestyle, dietetic habits, increased industrialisation, and pollution. The country’s first All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA) is

a landmark move, and will promote the traditional medicine system, which is affordable and accessible.

Recently, IIT Delhi and the AIIA have signed an agreement under which projects would be launched that would aim to give scientific validation to the ancient medical science and integrate it with technology. Under the MoU, the faculties of IIT Delhi and AIIA will work together in the projects to look at ways to integrate technology with Ayurveda. The projects would be funded by the AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga & Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa and Homoeopathy) Ministry.

The Ministry of AYUSH aspires to design a lifestyle that inspires change

through the time-tested practices of Yoga, Ayurveda, and so on.

The benefits of Yoga are manifold and touch each aspect of life and living. International Yoga Day has facilitated a lot of mindfulness among people globally. Now it is time to facilitate the worldwide promotion, development and recognition of Ayurveda. The Government is taking measures also to boost exports of AYUSH products.

Set against the above backdrop, Wellness India 2018 expo is of considerable significance. I extend my best wishes to the organisers, the India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and Exhibitions India Group, for hosting this important event.

DAILY news 2018Exhibitions India Group

‘India has the problem of plenty’

A fter an impressive start, India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) and Exhibitions India

Group were happy to kick off the second day of Krishi India 2018 expo/Wellness India 2018 expo with equally interesting seminars, stimulating panel discussions, exciting workshops and a buzzing exhibition floor. The highlights of the second day of the expo were the panel discussions.

With the focus now being on the ‘profitability aspect’ rather than the ‘productivity aspect’ of farming to achieve the 2022 target of doubling farmers’ incomes, the session on ‘Processing and Value Addition of Farm Produce’ explored and analysed how farmers could be integrated into modern value chains that can raise their incomes and also minimise the risks. Dr. J.P. Mishra, Adviser (Agri), NitiAayog, explained that there exist two kinds of risks - production risk and price risk, adding that Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana covers the production risk. Pointing out that India has the problem of plenty with the amount of food being produced, Dr. Mishra admitted, “Post production activity in India has issues for which a larger ecosystem needs to be created.” He added that post harvest value

of producers especially small and marginal farmers to forming an effective alliance to collectively address the many challenges of agriculture such as improved access to investment, technology, inputs and markets.”

The session on ‘Marketing Innovations and Infusion of Technologies in Agriculture’ saw panelists discuss the various technologies and their role in schemes like Soil Health Card, eNAM, Neem Coated Urea, etc. Prof. M. Moni, Chief Advisor (IT), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, underscored digitalized agriculture; digitalized agro-met advisories; digitalized agricultural resources information system and micro level planning for creating smart villages and achieving smart farming; and digitalized agricultural value chain from Farms to Profits for nearly 400 commodities, as key for doubling farmers’ income by 2022.

Ms. Nora Galway, Agriculture Counselor, Australian High Commission, highlighted how digital technology was fundamentally changing agriculture in Australia, where decisions are based on objective data, adding, “It would be nice to see technology transfer in agriculture from Australia to India.

addition has been debated at the level of the Prime Minister.

Shri Pradipta Kumar Sahoo, Business Head, SAFAL Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt. Ltd., said, “Value chain intervention is key to an efficient farm risk mitigation mechanism.”

Stating that farmer produce needs to be demand driven, Shri Gokul Patnaik, Chairman, Global Agri Systems Pvt. Ltd., said, “Farmers lack critical management skills and technology which are necessary for them to make profits.”

A shift from agriculture to agribusiness is being viewed as an essential pathway to revitalise Indian agriculture and improve farmers’ livelihoods. Dr Shruti Sethi, senior scientist, PHT, Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), opined that

value can be added by the manufacturer through branding and marketing.

The Modi Government is making considerable efforts to strengthen the current cooperative structure. There is a huge network of cooperatives in the country, the largest in the world. With around 8,33,560 cooperatives in existence, 98% villages are covered by these cooperatives, and farmers have easy access to them. Cooperatives are a formidable force for farmers, with all types of cooperatives eligible for National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) assistance. Defining the concept of farmer producer organizations Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), Ms Deepa Srivastava, Chief Director, NCDC, said, “The concept of FPOs consists of collectivization

The path is very clear. Agriculture has to move to the forefront from its present position, agree panelists at Krishi India 2018 expo/Wellness India 2018 expo.

For Divya, Klimom is not a mere business. It is a mission to bring back the lost charm and glory of the Indian Desi Cow. She is very attached to her cows and says, “You don’t choose the cow, the cow chooses you”. The words have a profound meaning because, out of the blue, one day Divya, a housewife got this idea to travel to Gujarat and when she saw the gentle Gir cows, she instantly fell in love with them. When she heard that the population of the Indian Cows are steadily coming down, she was determined to make Gir Cows popular. Department of Agriculture, Tamil Nadu is a century old department,

addressing the cropping and cropping related needs of the farming community.

The extension wing of the department is a well-established network and the system has undergone a major transformation since the 1960s. Community Development approach was in practice during the 60s and 70s. The extension wing was with the Panchayat Raj system where community based developments were given much thrust. High Yielding Varieties Programme (HYVP) was launched during late 60s with a view to increase the productivity of the crops by developing new varieties to cater to the growing population. This led to the First Green Revolution in agriculture. Subsequently, Intensive Agricultural Area Programme (IAAP) was the focus to increase the cropping intensity by cultivating more crops in a unit area. The single cropping area was brought into double crop area, thereby increasing the gross cropped area.

VisionIncreasing the productivity of the crops and thereby increasing the income of farmers through farm level intervention.

MissionProviding a comprehensive ICT platform for the farmers to access and disseminate information, as a mechanism to keep them informed on whatever they need, whenever they need and from wherever they need. Shifting focus from the crop based to the farm based. Further, the mission is to identify the reason for gap in yield of individual farms and address them.

Organizational Goal• Facilitatingtheextensionsystem

• Keepingthefarmersinformedandlaying focus on individual farm rather than individual crops

• Bridgingtheyieldgap, increasingtheyield and income of individual farms.

Training and Visit System (T&V)During 1980s, a radical shift was given to the extension system, consequent to the introduction of the World Bank aided Training and Visit System. The extension system was considered very vital in the transfer of technology from the lab to the land. In order to make the extension system function as a Primary Innovator, scheduled visit to a fixed village on a particular day in the fortnight was designed. The Agricultural Extension worker, visiting a particular village one day, visited the contact farmers, identified as elite farmers. They were given the information required during that fortnight and to other farmers in that village. The Agricultural Extension Worker was visiting the fields during the forenoon and advised the farmers accordingly. In the afternoon, group meetings were organized to identify the input requirements and the field problems. The problems faced by

the farmers were solved to the extent possible. Feedback mechanism was the built in feature of the system.

At the end of the fortnight a coordination meeting was organized to share the feedback of the night and the technology to be disseminated during the next fortnight.

This system continued till early 90s. During that period the Broad Based Extension system under Tamil Nadu Agricultural Development Project (TNADP) integrating the agriculture and allied sectors like Horticulture, Animal Husbandry, Fisheries, Poultry and Forestry was taken up to ensure round the year income from the farm. This was taking care of the economy of the farming community to some extent while one sector poses threat due to sudden calamities.

During the six decades, the focus was on developing technologies and varieties, dissemination of information to farmers and ensuring adoption of technology by the farming community. This has created a stable situation in the food production front as well as on the income front of the farming community.

IT initiativesThe Comprehensive Input

Supply Management System is an

online module for supply chain management as well as Benefit tracking system. The benefits accrued to the farmers are assessed and documented online. This system provides dynamic information on the availability of quality inputs to the farmers at a subsidized cost so that the farmers can take timely purchase decisions.

AccoladesGovernment has set a definite path to usher in Second Green Revolution in Tamil Nadu as it has surpassed 100 LMT of food grain production during 2011-2012, 2013-2014, 2014-2015, 2015-2016 and bagged “Krishi Karman Award” four times from Government of India. Government of Tamil Nadu was also conferred with the “Best Big Agriculture State Award” by “India Today”.

Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, Government of India, awarded the AGRISNET project GOLD award under the Focus Sector Agriculture – for the Best eGovernance Initiatives taken during 2011.

Department of Agriculture and Cooperation, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India has proposed to replicate the Farm Crop Management System (FCMS) to the rest of the states in the country.

The AGARISNET - Farm Crop Management System (FCMS) has bagged National Level GOLD award of National eGovernance Awards for the year 2014-15. This project is an incremental innovation over the previous awarded AGRISNET project.

Government of Tamil Nadu also received the “National Gold Award for e-Governance” from Government of India for the year 2014-2015.

Department of Agriculture received the “Skoch Platinum Award” during 2015-16 for designing the software for “Comprehensive Input Supply Management System.”

Sustaining the use of publicly available information from Agriculture Portal (SUPPORT) has been selected for SKOCH SILVER AWARD 2018.

financial and non-financial solutions.Samunnati leverages on the social

capital and trade capital in buyer seller relationships via Samunnati Aggregators (SA), through non-traditional sourcing, risk assessment and mitigation, aided by cutting edge technology, thereby building quality business that is sustainable and results in inclusive growth.

The entire organisation works around the genetic code that is non-negotiable, the crux of which is demonstrated in all the processes adopted by the Company.

Around 60% of Indians derive their livelihood from agriculture, though its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country is less than 15%. Agricultural growth has long been recognised as an important instrument for poverty reduction.

Small holder farmers of the agriculture value chain face several issues such as lack of institutional support for production, post production handling, along with fragmentation of the sector leading to poor economies of scale. Lack of access to timely and affordable credit sources, quality inputs and instruments limits producers to pursue traditional agriculture with very less value addition. Also, the lack of effective feedback mechanisms from many value chain players leads to low level of innovation. Low market access, weak marketing links and under governance of the value chain by the producers has led to poor realisation for the produce. Samunnati on identifying these issues , taps this as an opportunity to help the value chain players work at a higher equilibrium.

DAILY news 2018Exhibitions India Group

Hundred years ago, in May 1916, Sri Krishna Raja Wodiyar IV (the

then Maharaja of Mysore) and Sri Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya (the then Diwan of Mysore), set up a Government Sandalwood Oil factory at Mysore for sandalwood oil extraction.

The primary goal of the project was to utilize the excess stocks of the fragrant wood that had piled up after the World War I halted the export of sandalwood from the kingdom of Mysore (the largest producer of sandalwood in the world at the time).

Two years later, the Maharaja was gifted a rare set of sandalwood oil soaps. This gave him the idea of producing similar soaps for the masses, which he immediately shared with his bright Diwan. In total agreement about the need for industrial development in the state, the enterprising duo (who would go on to plan many projects whose benefits are still being reaped) immediately got to work.

A stickler for perfection, Visveswaraya wanted to produce a good quality soap that would also be affordable for the public. He invited technical experts from Bombay (now Mumbai) and made arrangements for soap making experiments on the premises of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). Interestingly, the IISc had been set up in 1911 due to the efforts of another legendary Diwan of Mysore, Shri. K. Sheshadri Iyer.

From the talent involved in the research happening at IISc, he identified a bright, young industrial chemist called Sosale Garalapuri Shastry and sent him to England to fine tune his knowledge about making soap. Affectionately remembered by many as Soap Shastry, the hardworking scientist would go on to play a key role in making Visveswaraya’s dream a reality.

The Legacy of Mysore Sandal Soap

After acquiring the required knowledge, Shastry quickly returned to Mysore where the Maharaja and his Diwan were waiting anxiously. He standardized the procedure of incorporating pure sandalwood oil in soaps after which the government soap factory was established near K R Circle in Bengaluru.

The same year, another oil extraction factory was set up at Mysore to ensure a steady supply of sandalwood oil to the soap making unit. In 1944, another unit was established in Shivamoga. Once the soap hit the market, it quickly became popular with the public, not just within the princely state but across the country.

However, Shastry was not done yet. He also created a perfume from distilled sandalwood oil. Next, he decided to give Mysore Sandal Soap a unique shape and innovative packaging. In those days, soaps would normally be rectangular in shape and packed in thin, glossy and brightly coloured paper. To help it stand out from the rest, he gave the soap an oval shape before working on a culturally significant packaging.

Cognizant of the Indian love for jewels, Shastry designed a rectangular box resembling a jewellery case- with floral prints and carefully chosen colours. At the centre of the design was the unusual logo he chose for

the company, Sharaba (a mythical creature from local folklore with the head of an elephant and the body of a lion. A symbol of courage as well as wisdom, the scientist wanted it to symbolise the state’s rich heritage.

The message ‘Srigandhada Tavarininda’ (that translates to ‘from the maternal home of sandalwood’) was printed on every Mysore Sandal Soapbox. The aromatic soap itself was wrapped in delicate white paper, similar to the ones used by jewellery shops to pack jewels.

This was followed by a systematic and well-planned advertising campaign with cities across the country carrying vibrant signboards in neon colours. Pictures of the soapbox were noticeable everywhere,

from tram tickets to matchboxes. Even a camel procession was held to advertise the soap in Karachi!

The out-of-the-box campaign led to rich results. The soap’s demand in India and abroad touched new heights, with even royal families of foreign nations ordering it for themselves. Another important turning point for the company was when, in 1980, it was merged with the oil extraction units (in Mysuru and Shivamoga) and incorporated into one company called Karnataka Soaps and Detergent Limited (KSDL).

Nonetheless, the Mysore Sandal Soap remains the company’s flagship product, the only soap in the world made from 100% pure sandalwood oil (along with other natural essential oils such as patchouli, vetiver, orange, geranium and palm rose). Due to tremendous brand recall and loyalty associated with the soap, it also bags a prized position on the shopping lists of visiting NRIs.

In 2006, the iconic soap was awarded a Geographical Indicator (GI) tag - that means anyone can make and market a sandalwood soap but only KSDL can rightfully claim it to be ‘Mysore Sandalwood’ soap.

Today, there are a multitude of branded soaps in the market but Mysore Sandal Soap continues to hold a distinctive place among all of them. Its production figures continue to rise.

The story of Mysore Sandal Soap and its enduring appeal is an inspiration not just for Indian PSUs but for the entire FMCG sector. Here’s hoping that its future is aromatic as its history.

There is something beautifully Indian about the fragrance of sandalwood. Sweet, warm, rich and woody; it is a scent that is deeply interwoven with the nation’s history and heritage. This is, perhaps, one of the many reasons why the Mysore Sandal Soap has held a special place in the hearts of Indians for more than a century.
