Input provided by:State department of educationScholars & assessment developersProfessional organizationsParent, students and members of the publicHow Were the CCSS Designed? The Standards are:Research and evidence basedAligned with college and work expectationsRigorous and engage higher order thinkingInternationally benchmarked Why were the CCSS developed?

Essential QuestionWhy do schools/districts need a common set of standards to measure student achievement?

) Equity- common standards ensure every student has been treated equally for their grade level. No matter which state you are in or move to, all students learn the same thing.2) Teachers have the ability to work from Common Goals.3) Mobility- continuity of program from district to district or even within the same district (school to school). Everyone is held to the same standard of learning.4) Common focus allows us to share curriculum. Time share.6Surprising Statistics2008-2009: 1.5 million students in remediation% of students not prepared for college level work:33% reading47% social science58% algebra72% biologyOnly 23% of college students do not require any remediation.

How Common Core is DifferentGreater focus on ProcessesMore specific description of outcomesMust show Evidence and Awareness of Underlying ProcessesHow do you Know? Why do you have that answer?New TerminologyGreater focus on LearningFocuses on critical thinking. Increased Lexile levels, Focus on informational textsEmphasis on argumentative writing, Technology integrated throughout standards, All teachers are expected to teach Literacy. 8What CCSS Does not Define! How teachers should teachAll that can or should be taughtThe nature of advanced work beyond the coreThe interventions needed for students well below grade levelThe full range of support for English language learners and students with special needsEverything needed to be college and career ready. How are the CCSS Organized?

English Language ArtsMathThe CCSS seeks to develop students whoDemonstrate independenceEvaluate complex textsPossess strong content knowledgeCommunicate effectivelyComprehend and critiqueLocate and use evidence effectivelyFeel confident solving real world problemsUnderstand other perspectives and culturesApply their existing knowledge to new situationsUse technology and digital media strategically and capably.Technology Skills Blended Into StandardsTo be ready for college, workforce and life in a technological society, students need the ability to:Gather, comprehend, evaluate, synthesize, and report on information and ideas.Conduct original research in order to answer questions or solve problems.Analyze and create a high volume and extensive range of print and non-print texts in media forms old and new.Strategic and Capable UseTailor their searches online to acquire useful information efficiently.Integrate what they learn using technology with what they learn offline. Are familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and select and use those best suited to their communications goals.
