Women empowerment means emancipation of women from the vicious grips of social, economical, political, caste and gender-based discrimination. Women are fighting in every aspect of human life to grant themselves the freedom to make their life choices. The women started a revolution and that has now sparked into an evolution. Two hundred years ago anyone who said that women should have the right to vote should have sounded strange, but today not granting them voting rights in Saudi Arabia appears to be strange. The right to vote for women in the past seemed impossible but they have rightfully earned their right to suffrage in the 21st Century. A woman not only plays multiple roles of a mother, a sister, a wife and a daughter, but also of a businesswoman or an entrepreneur at the same time. Education, right to vote, basic human rights, civil rights and many more have been granted to make their life comfortable. A woman seeks respect from the society and moreover to be treated equal, but we often come across many cases of female infanticide, domestic violence, mental and physical harassment. Women empowerment in the truest sense of the term will be achieved only if there is attitudinal change in society with regards to respect, dignity and equality. Swami Vivekananda said that men and women are like the wings of a bird, and a bird cannot fly with one wing. In the society both men and women are required to be equal to make the world a better place. With that being said, let us hope that women empowerment spreads to progressive as well as backward areas across our vast country of India.
