FIOA SELECTION POLICY 1988/89--------------------------------In view of imminent closing dates, this preliminary noticp hasbeen issued to deal specifically with the more urgent events.Hoy 21 Ireland/Scotland International Trossachs

A team of 6 H21 and 6 W21 i~ required.July 30Aug 1

Continental Cup Co. WicklowAll classes from H/W11 to H/W60A team of 2H and 2W competitors per ~lass is required.

Ireland/Sootland

Initial H21 and W21 squads are currently being drawn up in rankedorder, incorporating competitors not resident in Ireland. Theselists will be updated with results from the ConnaughtChampionships, J.K., and Irish Championships with selectiontaking place immediately following the latter event.Continental Cup

The unusual format of this event, plus the annual flow ofcompetitors across classes and lack of suitable domestic~ompelition in 1968 has determined that selection for all classeswill be based on the Connaught and Irish Championships. However, squad rankings following the Irish Championships will largelydeoide the H21 and W21 selection, in the antioipation that thiswill gi~e due alloMance to possible tenm members invol~ed inevent organisation.Selection Survey

Responses to the survey havp now bpen 8s~~ssed and a seJectionpolicy agreed. The composition of initial $enior Squads will ~epublished and circulated, tocether with a Eu~ruary of theresponses and including full details of the sel~ctjon process for1988/89.Feb 27 Conneught Championships

REVIEW OF THE 1987 SEASON

Looking back on the 1987 season and some recent events it becomesapparent that there are quite a few aspects that could be improved on in1988. I've decided to list some of these below. bearing in mind thatorienteering should be fair and enjoyable.

I know. onJy too well. the onerous task it is to organise events. However, people who undertake this task must be able to shoulder somecriticism from time to time. Nobody is perfect. People should be able torecognise that they have made mistakes and should try to do better next time- rather than take the easy option and opt out. My purpose in raising thesepoints is in the hope that future organisers will take note. I also wish tosupport John McCullough - John has been the only public critic of poor eventsfor many years and I have agreed with virtually every word he has writtenin that context.

Here are some of my (and other AJAX)comments on some recent events. Letme stress again that there is no personal criticism intended - these arecriticisms of some technical aspects of the way the events turned out:

Events in Svitterland March-May 87 I attended" 'National B' events inSwitzerland earlier this year - each one featured a hidden control (eitherburied in a depression or re-entrant or in thick vegetation) so take heartthose about to be criticised - you are not alone.

Munlter Championlhipl, [noct.aphuotl OctJ 7/18 1987Mlp: Laverty photogrammetry not supported by adequate ground survey.Turbary (peat cutting) symbol not correct- it looks like a contour.Undergrowth screen on open ground was not warranted - the differencebetween it and neighbouring terrain was not apparent and the symbol usedhid detail.Planning: Codes switched on tvo of the A rellY courses The A Relayshould have been declared null and void. A control was too near the edge ofthe map (relay). One control. at least, had a code marked on the flag whichwas incorrect (the real code was hanging down inside). Many dog legs wereon the shorter relay courses due to the impassibility of the wood. On Day onea Jot of courses were given a route choice across a dangerous marsh whichwas not taped off-the notice at the start about wet marshes was inadequateif it was referring to this particular boghole.Organisation: Some late entries refused- the people were given entry on theday but were classed as "non-competitive" . This is just plain stupid.Orienteering is not so big in Ireland that organisers cannot afford to be a littlebit flexible - as most are. These organisers did not discharge theirresponsibility to the sport - it was their duty to find the best orienteers ineach class on that day.

ILeinster Championships. Devils Glen Novl. 1987Late entries were subject to a severe £2 penalty. However. on the bright side, entries only closed 10 days before the event. This was one of a number ofevents which featured the sending out of control cards before the eventwithout control descriptions. Many (most?) people like to write thedescriptions on the card before they go out. and so had to preserve this blankcard for weeks until it was needed. Surely organisers cansend out the descriptions as well - ] don't think that any significantadvantage could be gained by unscrupulous competitors. The Novice course was of M21 A standard - the first control sent unsuspectingnovices straight into the steep sided Devils Glen itself to find a crag and therest of the course was of a supreme technical difficulty. Novice courses shouldbe easy with mostly line feature controls - a few easy point features may beintroduced towards the end. There should be a long and a short course. Thesecourses are different from Wayfaring, which should be confined to pram-pushing terrain and should visit the scenic parts of the area,The ClSM map was great, but there is still at least one area (directly N ofGlanmore Castle) inwhich the contours go in the wrong direction. A lapse inmostly good planning brought most courses through this.

Clanv.le, 8 Nov 1987 The undermanned organisers did well here inappalling conditions, with good planning on a great map. There should, ofcourse, have been a pre-start for the mastermaps but Pat Healy performed asuperhuman task here in getting people going, when most seemed to arrivelate- ] doubt whether anyone else could have managed. Two controls weresited on map errors. One was on a knoll shown on the top of a break in slopeon the map, while the marker was definitely lower, on the main steep slope.Nearer the finish, in lower Oarabeg wood,a control was stuck down at tbe bottom of a briar infested depression. On themap the depression was shown as being at the end of a bank - however, thebank in reality clearly continued much further downhill. The hiding of themarker accentuated the map error.

Irish 2 Day. Inch H November 1987Everybody enjoyed themselves immensely. My favourite event for years.A thank-you too to the organisers who were able to accomodate a moron (me)who miscalculated his start time by an bour.Irish 2 Day, Gleng.rrilf 15 November 1987 The best feature of thisevent was the classic 'walk to the start' - Lady Bantry's lookout. The planninghowever was diabolical. It clearly transgressed the basic concept thatorienteering should be enjoyable. Neither was it any sort of test of people'snavigational abilities. The level of non-finishers and those over 2 hours wasunacceptably high( see also the winning times below). In the wood, the mapwas simply not adequate and the position of controls did not recognise this, especially for most courses near the finish.

12

The map features a tag-less crag symbol - this is OKon a steep slope, wherethere is no ambiguity about which way a crag is facing. However, when thissymbol is placed in the middle (yes, the middle) of a spur, parallel to itslength and then used as a control site in an area of dense undergrowth theexercise is reduced to the level of farce.

Ballinastoe. 13 Dec 1987 Classic Treasure Hunt planning saw the old, thesick and the handicapped led into fight t.o look for various ridiculous controls. The M21 A course featured an interesting parador - i{ that control on the cragnear Djouce summit was correct, then the one in the Irish 2 Day a few yearsago, marked on the same feature but placed 50m uphill on a smaller crag, must have been wrong. Or is it vice versa? A nearby control was laughinglyreferred to in the descriptions as a crag - steep incline in a heather-concealedriver bed would have been more accurate. Again, as is characteristic. thetechnical error was wildly accentuated by the hidden position of the controlflag.

General: A disturbing practice featured at a recent event is that ofwitholding cards from people who, for instance, hadn't paid their late entryfee. The organisers job is not to stop people orienteering but to encourage asmany people as possible to participate.Planners are having patchy success in predlctlng winning times. Comments - Recom mended times are BOF.Times that were too long are inboJd type i.e. Lelnster male and Glengarriff male and female veterans. Theonly winning time that was much too fast was the Munster M21£. Thisperpetuates the pattern of planners making this course too short and others(who are less well able to cope) too long.

EASTINGS

LEINSTER AUTUMN LEAGUE

Gentle reader please allow for the fact that these notes are written in earlyJanuary but will probably not appear before your eyes until February.Hopefully the last league event was held on 14th Februarywhen the Pine Forestmap made its debut. Hopefully the promised results from the 4th event at Clara-Lara arrived in time to be reckoned with the other five. The League wasextended into 1988 in order to provide the six events originally promised.Apologies are extended to any comptetior, due to changed class in 1988. whowas inconvenienced by this extension. Any suggestions as to the future runningof a Leinster League would be most gratefully received,

LEINSTER IN 1988

The brightest star in the firmanent in the Emerald and Continental .whose lightthreatens to abscure everything else. For years the organisation of events in theregion has depended on the same small circle of people. The Emerald &Continental will absorb and consume the engergies of this trusty band. AfterAugust, a new second line of club members will need to come forward in orderto organize an adequate programme of events. If not, the enthusiast may wellhave to penetrate deepest Munster. cross the Shannon or head for the far Northin search of competition.

SELECTORS

The Leinster Region has had no senior selectors since the resignation of PatFlanagan and Diana Large, several months ago. Particular thanks is due toDiana Large who performed this onerous task for a considerable length of time.By the time of publication ofTlO no. 33 it is to be hoped that two people haveagreed to become selectors. This should be of particular concern to all thoseaspirants to selection for the Continental Cup.

ENDYMION AWARD

Congradulations to Trim-O on the successful running of their first event atCootehill. It is heartening to witness the coming-of-age of a vigoulous new clubin Leinster. Thanks to ECO for the Leinster Championships at Devil's Glen andto GEN for the League event at Ballinastoe, The 3-KOC event at Phoenix Parkan 26th December was marked by the appearance of some splendid fancy dressand of a generous gentleman dispensing lots of whiskey ..... a splendid innovation.

GEN NE\;VS GEN NEWS ....•.

Much water has flown under the bridge since your last communique ...

• Your AGM has taken place, with considerable enjoyment on the part of thosepresent. The formal proceedings were purposely kept short, but the club mustrecognise that some serious business lies ahead .... mapping, development ofthe club, more member involvement in both orienteering and social activitieswill aU be addressed by the committee in the coming weeks.

• Events at Events:

- at Ballinastoe, ably organised by John O'leary, we thought Brendan Balfehad become an honorary member, as his well-known voice introduced aseries of topical tunes through the courtesy of Peadar Dempsey

- at Belfield, where Paget and Andrew showed their regression to the school-boy state by partaking in the two legged race ~nd being throughly beaten)

- at Newbridge, where you scribe proved conclusively that the ditches arenavigable .... to swimmers, that is

- to Hollywood (substituting pro-tem for a Carrigolligan score event, to berun in March) where the love of Tuuy's proved irresistible yet again to ahard-core of club members

Concluding on the serious note which introduced the news, the developmentconference on January 30 touched on a series of challenges for the sport: GEN iscertainly not proof against these, and must look to strengthening its hand in thecoming months.

CLUB PROFILS...Sinoe tbe O'~eill Family were first introduced to the sport on lational 0Day two years ago they have attended as many events as' possible. Billy andFranoed are not competitive and sensibly run oourses that suit on tbe day.Billy enjoys the technical side having navigated in motor sports, thoughgetting fit was a gradual process. Frances, a jogger and yoga addict. hadno problem with fitness though found map reading difficult but has slowlymastered the technique. She feels that the teobnical demands, rather thantbe physioal ones, may Intimidate some adults from trying tbe sport. Markand Shane are competitive in 1115 and J1113.,Membership of Mark's sohool.club, De La Salle Churchtown, has highteQed interest and providedessential training. Maeve, who is 9, runs with either parent. The O'lleillssee the unique value of orienteering in its capacity to cater for all thefamily at the one time. Apart from tbe actual partioipation the post-IIOrtems provide opportunity f or discussion and a cbance for parents tolearn from tbeir children. Sundays are now real family days.
