USA GYMNASTICS Message

Bob Colarossi President of USA

Gymnastics

Seven year ago when I was hired as the President/CEO of USA Gymnastics I set out to establish a clear vision for the future of the sport. It was to win medals, grow the sport and increase our visibility. I knew then as now that the future success of USA Gymnastics would be indelibly tied to the growth and successes of our Member Clubs. And also, that nothing would help foster that growth and visibility more than robust success on the podium at World Championship and Olympic events. Each one of these three objectives was tied to the other in a mutually supportive relationship.

We can look back on the past seven years with a true sense of accomplishment. We just completed an Olympic quadrennium in which American athletes achieved an unparalleled level of success. Awareness and respect for gymnastics is at record levels, and, as a result we have seen tremendous growth in our club programs. And the clubs did grow, and grow and grow. In fact, today there are more gymnastics schools in the United States than there are Chevy dealers.

This is not to say there are not challenges that the gymnastics community will need to confront in the future. An unintended consequence of our successes is a shortage of qualified instructors. This will be one of the greatest tests facing the futu re leadership of our organization. We will need to renew our commitment to make education the number one priority in the sport so that we may create a lasting legacy of teaching professionals.

I would like to also take a moment to thank our sponsors, VISA, adidas, Chevron, IJ . Maxx, GM, Hershey, Jet Set Sports, AAI, GKj Elite, and NBC Sports who stood by USA Gymnastics providing the support that allowed our athletes to focus solely on training and achieve their dreams on the field of play.

It has been an incredible honor and privilege to work with the athletes, coaches and members of USA Gymnastics for the past seven years. It has been a time of unprecedented growth and success throughout the gymnastics community. I want to take a moment in this last address to offer a word of thanks first to my staff at USA Gymnastics and then to all of my friends throughout the gymnastics community. The achievements of the last seven years are a testament to what can happen when a strong team pulls together and focuses on a greater goal.

I now look forward to continuing to contribute to the sport as a member of the FIG Executive Committee as well as the Board and Executive Committee of USA Gymnastics. I will always be available to help the next generation of leadership build on our successes and take gymnastics to even higher and greater achievements. Thank you again for your faith in our joint vision; it has truly been a pleasure and an honor to be associated with the greatest sport in the world.

Bob Colarossi

Did you know that to a child there are basically only two major holidays in the entire calendar year? One is Christmas and the other is, of course, his or her BIRTHDAY! Birthday parties are a GREAT way to introduce kids from your area to your gym

programs! At a party they get to see your awesome facility AND interact with your best, most kid-friendly coaches all in a fun, festive atmosphere! Who wouldn't be begging mom to let them enroll in classes? So, now that we have that settled, read on!

~~LA\~8 ~~ , /

Decide how far you want to take this party thing. Do you want to offer multiple party plans - or just stick with one basic party? This will also depend on whether you're in a position to hire a Birthday Party Coordinator who will be responsible for booking, setting up, purchasing supplies and staffing parties.

Are you interested in a simple to put together "gym time only" party - where you supply the coaches and the gym, but the party supplies, preparation, set up and clean up is the responsibility of the customer? OR .. . do you want to make the parents in your area jump for joy when they hear that you offer a worry-free, ALL-INCLUSIVE gymnastics party where they happily put down the big bucks because it promises no pre-planning, no clean up ... and no headache! You could offer a variety of party packages including both of these plans and possibly more!

Next, decide on the cost of your parties. Do your homework and check out what other types of birthday parties are available locally. Include bowling, skating, swimming, and, of course, Chucky Cheese and Safari Sam's. This will give you an idea of what most customers are willing to spend on their little darling's special day. Now, figure out what it will cost your gym to put on these parties. Don't make the parties too inexpensive ... remember, people don't mind paying a good price as long as the product is worth it!

Now that you are prepared to put on the best birthday party ever, you need to let everyone else know! Word of mouth on a great party place spreads FAST, so what you need to do is to get your first couple of parties booked. You might want to start with one or two of your coaches' children. They make great guinea pigs because they can provide honest feedback (painful as it may sometimes be) to help you fine tune your awesome party. You will know your party has been successful when you hear kids at the end of the party exclaiming, "Can I have MY party here?" or "I'm definitely having MY party here!"

Okay, you've promised them the best birthday party ever, now it's time to PROVE IT! Remember how each birthday child has been waiting for this day all year long! They begin announcing it a few weeks prior and the excitement mounts until the long awaited celebration day finally arrives ! This is the mentality we need to focus on as we entertain at their party. I say, "entertain," because that's exactly what we need to do . For an incredibly successful party we must be a Game Show host,

..... -6-----------------« TECHNIQUE· APR Il 2005 ) )------ --- --------

Page 7: Technique Magazine – April 2005

a Comedian, an imaginative Storyteller, a Cheerleader, a Disc Jockey (upbeat, fun music is a MUST) , and of course a terrific and energetic Gymnastics Coach. The birthday child should feel like they are the most important person in the world to us for that hour and a half or two hours during their party. We must do our best to live up to the expectations they have had since they first started counting down those long weeks and days. And remember ... once all those kids get a taste of how much fun they had at your gymnastics club, be prepared to find room for them, and their friends, in your classes!

So, what are you waiting for? Get ready to CELEBRATE with Gymnastics Birthday Parties!

Chevron was the first gasoline to be qualified TOP TIER by

BMW, GM, Honda and Toyota have established a demanding standard for gasoline performance called

National Gymnastics Day is scheduled for August 6, 2005. The theme for this year's National Gymnastics Day is "Begin Here. Go Anywhere!" Here's an update on what's happening with the annual celebration.

State Proclamations USA Gymnastics has requested that the Governors from all 50 states Official State Proclamation for National

Gymnastics Day on Saturday, August 6, 2005. Upon receipt of the State Proclamations, USA Gymnastics will make these available on the USA Gymnastics website (www.usagymnastics . erg) and click on Events, then National Gymnastics Day, so that you can print out and post your state's proclamation in your gym.

USA Gym nastics suggests contacting your Mayor for a local Proclamation, too! If there's notyeta proclamation for your state posted on the website, simply download

a sample Proclamation and Press Release. Customize your

own press release and send it to your Mayor. Hopefully your city will issue a Proclamation. Send this

information to your local media and gain some media exposure for your National Gymnastics Day celebration .

Promote Your Activities For the first time, you can go online and type in your information regarding National Gymnastics Day and automatically have your event included on our website listing of NGD activities. Simply go to www. usa-gymnastics.erg click on events, click on National Gymnastics Day, and scroll down to Club Activities - Tell Us Form. If you prefer send your NGD information to Loree Galimore at club@usagymnastics .erg.

The steps to get your gym involved in a Cartwheel-A-Thon

USA Gymnastics is organizing a national Cartwheel-A-Thon to celebrate National Gymnastics Day, August 6, 2005. What better way to celebrate the sport than to have all of your class students and team gymnasts cartwheeling! It will be a great way to attract media attention and raise funds for the Children's Miracle Network or some other great cause.

To add extra incentive, the club or group that raises the most money for the Children's Miracle Network will win a grand prize from USA Gymnastics, which includes an all expenses paid visit from a USA Gymnastics National Clinician to your gym! Your gym will also be featured in USA Gymnastics and Technique magazines as well as included on the poster for National Gymnastics Day 2006.

The gymnast that brings in the most money to Children's Miracle Network will be featured in USA Gymnastics and Technique magazines and be included on the poster for next year's National Gymnastics Day.

Page 15: Technique Magazine – April 2005

Here's how the Cartwheel-A-Than works:

STEP #1 If you're raising money for the Children's Miracle Network you can download a Cartwheel-A-Thon pledge sheet from the website www.usa-gymnastics.org and click on National Gymnastics Day.

STEP #2 Once you have your form, hand it out to all of your students and begin marketing and planning the specifics for your Cartwheel-AThon such as when, where, what time, etc.

STEP #3 The gymnasts will go out and collect their pledges prior to the event or just collect flat donations at that time. After the event, the gymnasts can go back and collect their donations. The club coordinator will need to collect all gymnasts' pledge sheets and mail the check to the Children's Miracle Network: CMN, 4525 South 2300 East, Suite 202, Salt Lake City, Utah 84117.

To qualify for the USA Gymnastics prizes for obtaining the most money on behalf of the Children's Miracle Network you must have all money in to CMN prior to October 1, 2005.

We encourage everyone to plan the Cartwheel-A-Thon on or before National Gymnastics Day, August 6.

STEP #4 Send photos and a brief description of how you celebrated National Gymnastics Day to USA Gymnastics. Email ciub@usa-gymnastics. org or mail to USA Gymnastics, NGD, Pan American Plaza, 201 S. Capitol Ave., Ste. 300, Indpls., IN 46225.

The IGate Test' Asked by a 7th grader, "How can you tell a good country from a bad : The question: which way would the employees run? Would employees one?" William Bennett, former Secretary of Education and author of : flock to your doors . .. or sprint out? More likely, there would be no rush The Book of Virtues, uses the 'Gate Test: Simply put: open the gates : just a slow, steady migration so that month to month there would to a country and watch which way the people run. : be no noticeable difference, but year after year the difference would

As I see it, the 'Gate Test' for a Gym Club is an attempt to get a pulse on your employee 'attraction factor' and 'stickiness factor: In other words, to measure the health of your culture-the intangibles that attract and keep employees. To isolate culture, we must contrive a somewhat artificial situation since employees also have financial reasons as well as logistical/convenience reasons for their employment choices. Financial reasons might include: it is her sole source of support; he wants extra spending money; she is putting herself through college. Logistical or convenience reasons might include: proximity to her home; his child is on the team; the Gym Club is near the university she attends.

The Gym Club 'Gate Test'. First, in your mind's eye, disregard all financial and logistical/convenience reasons that your employees may have for staying employed at your GymClub (imagine a world where all food, clothing, shelter and transportation needs are provided free of charge). Also, imagine this world is absent of the various legalities, stigmas and loyalties that tend to dissuade people from switching jobs. Finally, pretend your market area is over-saturated with Gym Clubs, all vying for the same employees (that's not too hard to imagine, is it?).

The hypothetical scenario: (1) your Gym Club exists in a world where employees' physical needs are provided for and an employee has no reason to accept or stay in a job other than to seek intellectual, emotional and spiritual gratification; (2) your market area is flooded with other Gym Clubs, yet there are plenty of students for all.

be huge. On which side of the migration would your business be? Would the quality of your collective staff improve . .. or decline? After a decade of skirmishes would you win or lose the employee war?

If you would lose the war, drop every other project and seek serious change today, for this is the most serious of long term problems a business can face.

If you would win the war, raise the stakes and try again. Recall a GymClub that you admire deeply-a GymClub that really has things 'nailed' including : enthusiastic, responsible employees; smooth, efficient systems; consistently growing profit. Next, pretend all the GymClubs in your market are just like this one-even the one across the street! If you would still win the war, congratulations, your Gym Club truly has a world-class culture.

Kids First Sports Center's Core Concept: Here at Kids First, we are best : in the world at two things: (1) promoting responsibility through sport;

(2) developing great leaders. Focusing on the second: developing great leaders is not an 'add-on: For us, stretching employees' intellectual, emotional and spiritual boundaries is the essence of our existence. If we fail in this, we fail in total. I would like to think we would win the war.

Make it a great month.

WOMEN'S TECHNICAL COMMITTEE MINUTES CONFERENCE CALL

02/02/2005 CALL COMMENCED AT 7:00 PM

I. ROLL CALL: Chairman Region 1 Region 2 Region 3 Region 4 RegionS Region 6 Region 7 Region 8 Vice-Chairman SDWP JOPM Accred. Coordinator

Cheryl Hamilton Sue Graff Linda Mulvihill Carole Bunge Linda Thorberg Char Christensen Pat Panichas Myra Elfenbein Marian Dykes Audrey Schweyer Kathy Kelly Connie Maloney Renee Behrens

The purpose of the call was to address the recommendations made by the Judges' Accreditation Task Force. Cheryl addressed each of the following points and the committee discussed each as necessary.

The purpose of the Task Force was to review all aspects of the certification process for Women's Gymnastics Judges and make recommendations to the Women's Technical Committee for their decisions.

II. GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS The following are the recommendations that were submitted to the WTC: Timelines: Feb 15 TA Handbook Completed April 30 Mock TA Workshop at the WTC Meeting May 15 Begin testing the computer system. July 20 Kick-off date - On-line registration and Course Registration

NAWGJ State Judging Directors are submitting the information on the judges in their state so that the USAG database can be established and is accurate.

Concerning Test Administrators: o Those individuals that the WTC have deemed eligible to be considered

for a position as Test Administrator (TA) have received an Application Form from USAG asking if they are interested in becoming or remaining a TA.

o A spreadsheet will be sent to the WTC with the names of all those who made application. The WTC will designate those selected and the office will extend invitations to attend a TA Workshop held at either the NAWGJ Symposium or the USAG National Congress.

o All tests can be given by any TA as long as the TA holds an equivalent or higher rating.

o TNs who do not choose to take the 5 / 6 Test but agree to administrate that test must commit to that decision for the 8-year compulsory cycle once they have given the 5 / 6 Test.

o A Level 4 "take home test" will be distributed to individuals taking the Level 5/6 exam.

General Guidelines: o First local tests can be given August 20, 2005. o Accreditation year will be August 1 to July 31. o A judge can test each part (practical and written) of the same level a

maximum of 4 times within the same accreditation year. o Practicing Judging is NO LONGER required to test up to the

next level. o All current ratings expire Dec. 31, 2005 with the exception of the Brevet

Rating which will be extended lmtil the Brevet Course is conducted. o Assignment policy for the fall of 2005: Judges must hold the rating

for the level to which they are being aSSigned. During the "fall 2005 recertification period," the following guidelines / priotities will be used for assignment: 1st assign judges who have recertified at the appropriate level 2nd assign judges who have tested and passed one part (optional judges)

3rd assign judges who have tested and not yet passed 4th assign judges who have not yet tested

o Judges may hold an "OPTIONAL only" rating. A judge does not have to acquire a Level 5 / 6 rating if she chooses to test at a Level 9.

o After entry level, a judge must hold a rating for 12 months before testing up to the next level.

o Continuing Professional Education (CPE) points are not required to test at entry levels (Level 5/ 6 and / or Level 7 / 8). (see chart below)

o A Level 5 / 6 judge does not need CPE's to test at Level 7/8; however, CPE's are required to be aSSigned. (see below)

Recommendation to accept Task's Force suggestions as amended. Motion M. Dykes Second P. Panichas PASSED

III. CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION (ACTIVE STATUS) PROCEDURES The following system was developed by Task Force Members, Marian Dykes and Catherine Batsche regarding Continuing Professional Education for USA Gymnastics Professional Judges.

"Judges' Accreditation" will be the new name applied to the certification process and the process will be a part of the USA Gymnastics Univ~rsity. The "Continuing Professional Education (CPE)" system wIll be implemented as listed below:

Highest Rating Total (PE hours Minimum # of Clinic Maximum # of CUNIC Held needed per CPE Hours required hours allowed to carry

Accreditation Year as part of the yearly forward to the next total Accreditation Year

Level 5/6 12 hours 6 hours 2 hours Level 7 / 8 12 hours 6 hours 2 hours Level 9 16 hours 8 hours 3 hours Level 10 20 hours 10 hours 4 hours National 20 hours 10 hours 4 hours Brevet 20 hours 10 hours 4 hours

o CPE's are required to test up and to be assigned. o Hours are actual time (clock hours involved in the activity) o Clinic CPE are those hours spent:

- At a State, Regional, or Nationally Organized Congress, Clinic, Course or Symposium that is open to all . Judging or coaching sessions will be designated as "approved for CPE".

- USA UniverSity will develop CPE Certificates to be issued at the conclusion of an approved session by the clinician or organizational personnel.

- Judges should keep their CPE Certificates with a copy of the Annual Report Form for documentation.

o A maximum number of CPE hours may be acquired for the following miscellaneous activities: 1. coaching (6 hrs), 2. in-gym with coaches and gymnasts (6 hrs) 3. volunteering (4 hr) 4. video or live practicing judging (approved by the SJD and/ or

ONLY Spieth Anderson Just for Kids gives you swivel connections between tl e ai s and the adjusting tubes. This is really important because it allows the rails to flex and rotate freely with the child on the equipment without strain on the components. It also substantially reduces strain and fatigue on the child. Wifhout these connections, hitting the rail is like hitting a brick wall.

Olga Karmansky, 18, recently won the 2005 Rhythmic Challenge competition, taking the lead role in the sport of rhythmic gymnastics in the U.S. Karmansky has never been far from the spotlig ht, finishing as the ru nn er up at the 2002, 2003 and 2004 Rhythmic National Championships, and at the 2003 Pan American Games.

Olga trains at Nova Athletics in Brooklyn , N.Y. which is a five minute walk from her house. She said, "Winning the Rhythmic Challenge was the first step on the road that my coach Lucy Kerznerman and I had laid out for me for t his year. Winning made me reminisce about how thankful I am to all the people who helped me get here, especially my coach Lucy."

When as ked about rhythmic gymnastics in the U.S. , Olga said, "I believe there are misconceptions about rhythmic in America, mainly that it looks much easier than it is. It actually takes a lot of effort and we train 40 hours a week to get good at it," she said. "And it's an Olympic sport."

Olga's parents are Yu ry and Helen Karmansky. Her mother was a former rhythmic gymnast and she has an older brother, Stan ley.

Olga's plan for the future is to do her best in rhythmic gymnastics and enroll in college in January 2006, but nothing is final, she

ZURICH SUMMIT REVIEW Presented by the FIG

FONDEE EN IS81

The new Code has taken shape

Zurich, February 23, 2005: After four days of meeting, both Men's and Women's Technical Committees have reached a decisive step in the formulation of the new Code of Points for Artistic Gymnastics. Although it has not yet been finalized, we can already see the outcome.

Both committees, chaired by Adrian Stoica (ROM) and Nellie Kim (BLR); have defined the judging principles based on two panels of judges (A and B), whose duties can be summarized as follows .

The Code for everyone! Jury A, made up of 2 judges, actually gives the real value of the routine. A gymnast starts with a zero. He or she will perform successive elements and the Jury will only retain the ten best, those that "pay" the most! These difficulties receive, according to their level, a certain "price".

Element A B C D E F G

Value 0.10 0.20 0.30 0.40 0.60 0.80 1.00

Jury A adds the value of these 10 elements, and moreover will award a "credit" for each group of elements, also taking into account the connections that are applied only to specific apparatus. This total becomes score A.

It is interesting to note that both Presidents confirm that the Table of Difficulties will contain basic elements, in order to satisfy universal criteria, thus allowing the Code to be used both by the elite and beginners.

On the other hand, Jury B, made up by 2 or maybe 4 judges, will evaluate the routine according to its technical and artistic aspects, its execution, composition, and aesthetics. The judges will "start" from a "Magic 10.00" score, from which they will deduct penalties. At the end, they will introduce into the computer a score which will be added to the A score.

Magical Formula Gymnastics keeps its "Magic 10"! This "Oscar" will be awarded by Jury B to the gymnasts who will reach perfection, meaning that he or she has performed perform without any deduction.

Even better, Artistic Gymnastics is adding to its judging system a totally new dimension filled with emotion, that of the World Record! In the future, the addition of scores A and B will be entered in a record book, just as in Track and Field.

The notion of "a record to break" is born!

During the next Cycle, Artistic Gymnastics competitions will be emotionally charged with a double challenge for each gymnast: to reach the "10" in Execution and break a new World Record.

An expectation that will be shared by the spectators and the Media.

Some days all your routines are flawless.

Other days ... you need insurance.

With the perfect balance of specialized coverage

options, superior claims handling, and innovative risk

management services, Markel can vault you back

into the championships in no time.

GYMNASTICS Begin Here. Go Anywhere.

Keeps Junior Olympic Teams Looking Good By Brian Eaton

FROM ELITE SPORTSWEAR, L.P.

The nation's up and coming gymnasts will continue to look their best in the competition fashions of GK/ Elite Sportswear as part of a continuing partnership announced by USA Gymnastics. The renewed partnership extends an agreement established in 2001 and runs through 2008.

JJGK/ Elite joins USA Gymnastics as one of the single greatest proponents of grassroots gymnastics development, and we're proud to have their support through 2008, "said USA Gymnastics Senior Vice President Steve Penny.

GK/ Eli te, based in Reading, Pa. , will become the "exclusive apparel supplier to the Junior Olympic program." As a major part of the agreement, GK/ Elite's premier gymnastics apparel

will directly benefit the more than 100 athletes who co m pri se the men's, women's, and acrobatic gymnastics Junior Olympic National Teams, plus the more than 1, 500 annual Junior Olympic, TOPs, Future Stars, and JumpStart developmental teams.

"GK/ Elite joins USA Gymnastics as one of the single greatest proponents of grassroots gymnastics development and we're proud to have their support through 2008,"said USA Gymnastics Senior Vice President Steve Penny. "GK/ Elite's commitment is indicative of their long-standing support for developing athletes, and we're proud to continue that relationship through support for our Junior Olympic and grassroots programs."

"The 'GK' concept of regional teams competing in team uniforms rather than individual club uniforms has helped to bring these events to a higher level than previously experienced," adds Sallie Weaver President of GK/ Elite. "There is no substitution for GK's proven devotion to the sport of gymnastics, and the years of experience that have given us a very special and singular insight into what is needed to successfully manage this vital sponsorship."

In addition to the Junior Olympic National Team, GK/ Elite will outfit winners of the Junior Olympic National Champioships fo r men , women, rhythmic, and trampoline and tumbling. GK/ Elite gear will also be worn by members of the women's National Training Squad and TOPS National Team, the men's Future Stars National Team, the rhythmic National Developmental Team, and the T&T JumpStart Team.

GK/ Elite gains additional opportunities including exclusive sales rights at all Junior Olympic National Championships, with exposure to more than 6,000 gymnastics families , plus exhibitor space at the USA Gymnastics annual Congress and opportunities for direct contact with gym club owners and coaches nationwide.

V. BONUS FORQUALIFIER,U.S.CHAMPIONSHIPS& WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS FINAL SELECTION COMPETITION

The MPC discussed the approved USA Gymnastics bonus and any needed modilications for the Qualifier, the u.s. Championships and the World Team Selection Competition.

Motion: The following bonus will be used at the 2005 U.S. Qualifier, 2005 Visa Championships & the 2005 World Championships Team Selection Competition:

FX- for Natural D stuck dismount = +0.1, for Natural E stuck dismount = +0.2 SR & PB - D stuck dismount = +0.1, for E stuck dismount = +0.2 HE - for E stuck dismount = =0.1, for sE stuck dismount = +0.2

Vault bonus: +0.1 for 9.9 FIG value vault with no large deduction and +0.2 for 10.0 FIG value vault with no large deduction.

Any gymnast that performs a 9.9 or 10.0 FIG value vault may perform a second vault. The highest vault score will be used in determining the allaround score.

The combined average of the two vaults will detemUne the final vault ranking. If either of the two vaults has a 9.9 or 10.0 FIG value, the gymnast may perform a second vault to attempt to improve his score on the 9.9 or 10.0 valued vault. However, the gymnast is limited to a maximum of three

vaults and may only repeat one of the two vaults performed.

Example: a gynmast decides to repeat his first 9.9 or 10.0 vault then he may not repeat his second vault regard less if it has a 9.9 or 10.0 start value. A fourth vault will not be allowed.

Prior to repeating a vault, the gymnast or coad1 must dearly designate to the judge that a vault being performed is an ALTERNATE vault that may replace the vault he just performed.

A gymnast may not perform two 9.9 and / or 10.0 vaults and then decide to repeat the fi rst of the two vaults performed. A gymnast may only repea t one vault and it must immediately follow the first attempt.

The highest score of the vaults performed will be counted toward his final all-arow1d score. This is a modification to the FIG rule that states that the first vault score will COW1t toward the all-around score.

Motion: Bill Foster 2nd: Yoichi Tomita PASSED: Unanimously

The selection committee for the 2005 World Championships will be comprised of the MPC chairman, an athlete representative, Men's Sr. National Team Coordinator, Men's Program Director, and an At-large coach who is selected from among coaches in the community who does not have an athlete vying for one of the positions on the World team. It was also agreed that a final selection competition will take place due to the length of time between the Visa Championships and the World Championships.
