Dear reader,
Mark CheethamDirector Ingram Micro DC/POS EMEA
Online shopping has experienced
massive growth over the last few years,
which has had a significant impact on
the high street. Every day we read in
regional newspapers how difficult busi-
ness is for local, traditional retail outlets.
Lots of retailers, chain stores and retail
federations are currently searching for
ways to counter this boom from the
likes of Amazon to keep their customers
and sales in their high street stores.
Yet the traditional retail trade has mas-
sive advantages over online mail order
businesses. For example, it can provide
immediate delivery! Often it can also
make an impression by providing good
advice and competence. Or it offers
customers a special ambience and a
great shopping experience. One of the
main disadvantages it has, of course, is
the limited product selection available
in stores. But why should we not help
retailers to overcome this disadvantage
whilst continuing to strengthen their
advantages?
You can find one great example of a
solution to this problem in this edition
of our IM.tec. The MiFitto start-up has
developed a solution with Elo Touch for
the shoe trade which creates a special
shopping experience, provides end
customers with a special bonus and
enables retailers to expand their range
of products using stock in the store. I
hope I have made you curious - you can
find the article on page 6 in this edition
of IM.tec.
Perhaps you also have some good
ideas for supporting traditional retailers
in the UK with great solutions? I would
be delighted to hear your thoughts. We
will continue to look for innovative ideas
like this and would love to work with
you to bring your solutions to the retailer
market through our nationwide network
of partners. If you have any ideas like
this and want to collaborate with us,
please get in touch.

With the increased digitalisation of services and the connection of the Internet to POS, con-
sumers can be provided with future-orientated purchasing experiences, while retailers bene-
fit from substantial success factors. Within the framework of a pilot project in Seattle, USA,
the retailer Hointer offers its customers the opportunity to scan their favourite trousers in the
shop using a QR code via the Hointer app for smartphones. The customer is then immedi-
ately notified about which changing room has the scanned product available in the correct
size for the individual - delivered by robots. At Hointer, people are now employed as fashion advisers. The pilot scheme is
becoming a customer experience and offers a convenient service in relation to purchasing via the Internet.

NEW BUYING EXPERIENCE
DC/POS IM.tec January 2015 Cover Story 06
High tech in retail
Mifitto, a newly created German
company, wishes to improve the
purchasing process for shoes at the
point of sale with its 3D foot scanner.
Feet which are exactly measured
make the choice of suitable shoes
easier. The concept with interactive
touch screen from Elo has already
convinced the well known company
Fraunhofer, a retail lab and specialist
sports dealers.
With the 3D foot scanner, stationary
retailers have sales supporting tech-
nology to hand, whose usefulness is
immediately obvious to customers:
the system searches for the right
shoe for the foot - and not the other
way round. First of all, the foot is
measured and then mifitto comes up
with suitable recommendations.
The right screens
Since 2014, the mifitto systems
which have been equipped with
touch displays have been installed
at the point of sale and in a retail
lab. „When selecting the screens,
we chose qualitative high quality
and stable picture screens which
offer good usability“ says Thomas
Harmes, Managing Director of mifitto.
The Elo touch screen was selected
for the system, as the performance
of models of other manufacturers
was not satisfactory. A model which
can be delivered with the touch
technologies projective capaciti-
ve (PCAP) or IntelliTouch® Plus®
surface accoustic wave. The robust
full HD prfessional display from Elos
interactive digital signage (IDS) family
is, like the other models of the series
(up to 70 customised picture diago-
nals), equipped with an OLCD screen
and LED back light and has a display
lightness of 350 cd/m², which is very
much suitable for use indoors.
With Fraunhofer participation
Thomas Harms comes from a family
which has a long history of partici-
pation in the shoe trade. He knows
the retail market as well as he knows
the requirements in e-commerce.
In 2012, he founded the company
with two partners which has filled a
gap in the market with its shoe and
foot scanner that was developed
in a good 18 months. Alongside
practitioners from the shoe trade,
the renowned company Fraunhofer
is so enthusiastic about the concept
that it acquired a shareholding in the
company in October 2013.
Scientists from the Fraunhofer
Institus für Integrierte Schaltungen
– Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated
Circuits (Fraunhofer IIS) – also took
part in the development of the mifitto
scanner. By means of this, a practi-
cally orientated research partner is
on board, whose inventions have
already made a great contribution to
the e-world: Fraunhofer IIS resear-
chers have finally invented the MP3
format.
Tested in the retail lab
Since spring 2014, the scanner has
already been installted at four sites in
Germany. In Nuremberg, the mifitto
system belonged to the start up of
the retail lab „JOSEPHS – the service
manufacturer” at Karl-Grillenberger
Straße 3. Since 20 May, retailers and
customers can participate there in
the development, introduction and
marketing of modern product and
service concepts. In revolving three-
month test cycles for differing realms
of experience, various products
and services are showcased to the
visitors for testing and evaluation.
The first theme with the scanner and
touch display started under the mot-
to „creative with hand and foot“.
At the PoS at specialist
sports retailers
The sports shoes expert Teamsport
Philipp uses the system precisely,
creatively and durably. The company
has 7 branches and an online shop
So that the shoe fits: Foot scanner with the Elo touchscreen 3201L
The shoe is for the foot and not the other way round. The innovative 3D foot scanner, developed by a German start up company, is attracting great interest across the entire shoe and sport sector and inclu-ding Fraunhofer, a retail lab and specialist sports dealer.
DC/POS IM.tec January 2015 Cover Story 07
and is one of the largest Teamsport
dealers in Germany for football, foot-
ball boots and equipment.
At approximately 70%, revenues
from retail stores form the most im-
portant revenue stream for the spe-
cialist retailer. Since April 2014, the
sports dealer has been using the mi-
fitto scanner on 32 Elo 3201L units. It
was installed for the company at the
entrance to the main store next to the
corridor. Specialist advisors measure
customers’ feet with the scanner. “By
the end of the football World Cup,
the scanner will be in use for football
boots.“ says Christian Lenz, who is
also the manager of the online shop
at Teamsport Philipp.
In particular, football players have
particular customs when buying
shoes. Some prefer tight football
boots, others can play better in
relaxed boots. That and the differing
sizes according to manufacturer
are good reasons for the use of the
system at the point of sale. Alongside
the measured foot, product recom-
mendations are then shown on the
Elo touchscreen. In the future, the
mifitto system will be used by sports
dealers for other product groups, for
example in the case of running shoes
“The handling of the whole system
[forms the] perfect package.” accor-
ding to Lenz.
Success story continues
Mifittos scanner is currently attrac-
ting great interest in the entire shoe
and sports sector, so that in the
near future, more shops will use the
system. It is also been extended to a
large product and image database.
Therefore, at the moment at mifitto
in Duisburg, 10,000 shoes are being
scanned and photographed each
day, so that a large collection of
information concerning Women‘s
shoes, shoes for men and shoes
for children exists. This can lead to
lower return rates in online retail. In
retail stores, customers can obtain
better, speedier and more compe-
tent advice, either by themselves
or with the assistance of a sales
person, so that everything is as it
should be. Thereby the visualisation
and interactive nature of the screen
plays a key role.

Queue-busting: don’t lose customers
through long queues
Ask any shopper what they dislike
most about shopping and they will tell
you that they hate queuing up to pay
for goods. However, extra tills incur
additional costs and take up valuable
display space on the shop floor.
The use of wireless devices can
reduce queues in two ways:
Pre-scanning customer purchases
and printing a single barcode,
which is then scanned for payment
Implementing a mobile POS solution
Escorted shopping: expert
assistance for all who need it
Give your staff the freedom to greet
customers and assist them throughout
the store with mobile applications to
check inventory, access product infor-
mation, make recommendations and
process transactions and receipts.
Extended aisle: in-store ordering
for more choice
Kiosks can also be used to facilitate
extended-aisle applications. This ena-
bles customers to order non-stocked
items (other options, sizes, colours or
larger items) for later delivery to store
or home.
Coupon printing: reward your
loyal customers
Zebra kiosk and desktop printers can
be used for static in-store coupon
issuance. For more targeted cam-
paigns, retailers can use Zebra mobile
printers. To capture loyalty-card de-
tails, some mobile printers also have
card-reader options.
Automated order-processing: fast,
accurate service
For home-delivery or special-item
orders, there are often handwritten
forms to be filled out, which makes
it a slow, inefficient process. Mobile
terminals and printers enable store as-
sistants to process orders and provide
a more personal service. Product and
price accuracy are guaranteed, as a
barcoded order confirmation is taken
to the checkout for easy payment.
Loyalty and gift cards: instant
issuance in store
Provide loyalty cards to your custo-
mers at point of enrolment without
them having to wait. Zebra’s photo-
quality card printers can produce vivid
colourful cards in seconds. Magnetic-
stripe and smart-card encoding can
also be added as required.
Create extra-special gift cards with
personalised messages and
even photos using Zebra’s full-colour
card printers.
Six ways to improve the customer shopping experience
Using mobile technology, self-service kiosks or card printers improves the experience for shoppers: escorted shopping, in-store special offers and coupon printing, queue-busting, loyalty and gift cards of extended aisle.

When technology meets design:the new COBALTO 5300
With speed, user friendliness, reliability and design, the COBALTO makes working days easier and friendlier for the user, also on scan-intensive occasions.
For additional information please contactyour local Ingram Micro Data Capture / POSsales office. Or visit the Datalogic homepage: www.datalogic.com
With the new Cobalto™ CO5300
laser scanner, Datalogic is extending
its presentation scanner protfolio by
an omnidirectional high performance
laser scanner for the POS.
The new Cobalto impresses with its
pretty design and its compact, ergo-
nomic casing.
The reading window of the scanner
is surrounded by a light ring and
displays the successful reading by
flashing green. In addition, the po-
lyphone loudspeaker can be indivi-
dually configured in order to issue a
reading confirmation with a special
melody or sound.
The performance characteristics
of Cobalto stand for the highest
productivitiy: with an omnidirectional
reading sample of 20 lines and 1500
scans per second, Cobalto has the
speediest 1D decoder rate and the
highest movement tolerance on the
market.
For the user, the omnidirectional rea-
ding properties simplify the barcode
recording at the POS, as the barcode
is recorded independently from the
alignment. A high depth of field is
also one of the central product cha-
racteristics.
With a drop damage protection of
up to 1.2 metres, the product is
also extremely robust. Its factory
guarantee of 3 years guarantees a
secure investment. All known host
terminals are supported via the scan-
to-configure function „out of the
box“. By means of the scanning of a
programmer label and the supply of
the necessary cable, Cobalto is auto-
matically configured for the attached
host. In addition, a Checkpoint®
Systems compatible EAS model is
available.
So that the scanner can also be used
as a hand scanner, there is a „SCAN“
trigger on the head of the device, as
well as rubberised handles on the
side. In addition, the scan head can
be turned by 30° into the required
position.
In order to reduce electricity con-
sumption, the scanner can be
programmed in such a way that the
stand by mode is activated when it
is not being used. It is then automa-
tically „woken up“, once a code ap-
pears in its viewing window. Thanks
to its qualities, Cobalto is the ideal
solution in department stores, fashion
shops and office environments. In
addition, it can also be used in post
applications, in order to identify small
parcels and letter envelopes.
