BasedonthesubmissionsfortheEDPAwards2014/2015

May 2015

Every year the technical committee of the EDP Awardsfacesatoughchallenge, andthistimewasnoexception.

AnEDPaward is recognitionof themost innovativepro-duct thatcameoutduringthelast12months.Launchingandsubmittingaproduct isnotenoughtowin.Theinno-vation needs to outshine other developments in thesamecategory.Determiningwhatcountsasmeaningfulinnovation isoftenhard.Nowthemarket fordigitalprintequipment ismoremature itmeans that insomecatego-ries new products, although good products, are evolu-tionary rather than revolutionary.

What deserves to get an EDP Award for innovation? Of-ten it depends on the competitorsin a particular year. Insomeyears therewillbesignificantdevelopments in fea-tures, function and performance. If one firm has madegreat strides then in the following years, as competitorscatch up, what is a undeniably significant developmentfor those competitors, is not so significant for the marketas a whole.

Sometimes there may be no dramatic developmentsthat make for great stories and headlines but do, none-theless,meanabetterbusiness for theusers.Ultimately, thejudgesneedtostepintotheshoesofourreaders–theuser – to consider the products from their perspective.Howdoesaninnovationhelpthemtodotheir job?Howcan it improve the quality, throughput or economics oftheir operation? Does it go beyond those and enablethem to offer new applications and services to their cus-tomers?

Comparing theproductsentered ina fairway ishardbutis a task we take very seriously. Despite the expertise ofthe jury it i canbedifficult ifwehaven’thad theopportu-nity to see a product to fully understand all its featuresand benefits. Even if we have seen a product – be it at atrade show, launch event or showroom – it is often stilldifficulttomakeaninformeddecisionifwearenotprovi-ded with all the salient technical information. It is goodfor all of us as the market has evolved that there is more

focus on applications rather than on technology for it’sown sake. However, when it comes to establishingwhether a product deserves an EDP Award we reallyneed to understand the fundamentals of how the tech-nology delivers and not just why.
