TECHNICAL TUTORIAL TUESDAY 07 FEBRUARY 2012

Enterprises Migration: How and When?

A large part of the agenda will be dedicated this year to enterprises strategies. A first panel, «Are enterprises ready for the migration?», will gather representatives from different sectors.

The industrial sector will be represented by Continental Automotive, financial sector by Generali, government organization by the Belgian Federal Government, publishing sector by Heise Online, research centers by CERN and Kuleuven University, and finally content providers by Microsoft and Google.

A second round table, «Challenges that enterprises face when introducing IPv6» will gather analysts and vendors. They will address the main technical and organizational issues that enterprises face when moving to IPv6.

From the World IPv6 Day to the World IPv6 Launch

In January 2011, Internet companies around the globe announced they would come together to perform the largest test of IPv6 deployment the world had ever seen. After several months of preparation and an intense 24 hours in June, it was clear that the industry had witnessed a great moment in the move towards global deployment of IPv6.

As reports came in and logs were analyzed over the days and weeks that followed, it became increasingly clear that the industry didn’t need just another global test. Instead, it was necessary to enable IPv6 once and for all. So, on June 6, 2012, the industry will again unite but not just for a single day. This time, the intention is to turn it on and leave it on. The event will be called the World IPv6 Launch.

This new and crucial step towards the generalization of IPv6 will be announced in detail to parti-cipants of V6 World in Paris.

An IPv6 Connection for the Delegates

As it was the case during the last edition, delegates at V6 World and the collocated MPLS & Ethernet World will be given the opportunity to experience demonstrations of IPv6 applications, delivered through the Marriott Paris Rive Gauche Hotel and Conference center’s network (performed by iBahn).

Service provider Colt will provide the underlying Internet IPv6 Access service.

Cisco will deliver circuit and connectivity on site with their switches and servers. Statistics and figures will be presented during the last conference day.

These statistics will be collected in the same way as last year to show any differences since then.

SESSION II SECURITY & MANAGEMENT 15.30 Deploying IPv6 Securely IPv6 deployment has begun, largely driven by IPv4 address exhaustion. Even though

IPv6 is very similar architecturally with IPv4, it has it’s own security issues. The talk will review IPv6’s security issues and make recom-mendations on how to deploy IPv6 securely.

Bob Hinden CHECK POINT SOFTWARE FELLOW

15.50 The Layer-2 Insecurities of IPv6 and the Mitigation TechniquesNeighbor Discovery Protocol was specified without security in mind and before the IPv4 ARP/DHCP spoofing attacks existed, hence, NDP suffers from the same default of ARP. The most well-known attack against NDP is the rogue-RA (quite often caused by

misconfiguration). Detailing the different attacks, the work done at the IETF at the SAVI working group and the implementation on existing switches.

Eric Vyncke CISCO

16.10 Designing Security During IPv6 Deployment As the IPv6 network grows, possible attacks based on IPv6 are a concern among service providers. Operators are deploying different migration technologies in which the security aspect should be considered. What are the guidelines for designing security

features during IPv6 deployment? Perils of introducing NAT on network architecture, a look at alternative approaches. Review the approaches for multicast support during IPv4-IPv6 transition.

Suman Choudhary Chief Engineer of Network Product Line HUAWEI

16.30 Development of a Short IPv6 Plugin for the Detection of Attacks on the Neighbor Discovery ProtocolDescribing the implementation and use of a preprocessor module for the popular Open Source Intrusion Detection System Snort that detects attacks against the IPv6 Neighbor Discovery Protocol. The developed module is aimed at the detection of suspicious activity in local IPv6 networks and can detect misconfigured network elements, as well as malicious activi-ties from attackers on the network.

Thomas Scheffler BEUTH HOCHSCHULE

16.50 The Role of Network Automation in IPv6 Migration Projects The move from IPv4 to IPv6 will need a new way of managing the IP address space and related core network services like DNS and DHCP. Discussing this evolution and explaining the role of Network Automation in IPv6 migration projects, including IP Address Management and Network Change Management.

Anton Holleman, Senior Consulting SE, INFOBLOX
