Modification of Ventilation System

• In order to reduce the activated air emissions encountered during 2007, the ventilation system has been reversed and measures have been taken to improve the air-tightness of the area.

• Tests to be carried out over the next few weeks.

Target Cooling Water Panel

• Orphan• Dependant on

vacuum controls. The failure of one affects the other

• Difficult to access (inside primary zone)

• No spares

• Maintained by ST-CV• Completely

independent from vacuum sequence

• Easily accessible during operation.

• Spares available• Easy to operate user

Low energy shutdown works: main projects

REX- ISOLDE

* REXTRAP - exchanged insulators etc at internal structure

Done. Some discharges when starting up, but conditioning helps.

• REXTRAP - enlarge the internal differential pumping diaphragms Partially done. Preliminary test show an efficiency >60% Followed up with dedicated radioactive ion deposition test, e.g. 42K

* REXTRAP - adjust and consolidate the RF excitation electronics Done, but still not possible to avoid antiresonance for all masses. -> adjust the amplifier for the desired mass range -> wait for a new version in connection with the REXTRAP upgrade

* REXTRAP - proposal for complete trap consolidation

Awaiting AB management decision

* REXEBIS – find the reason for the LHe filling blockage Inspected inside. No blockage found.

* REXEBIS – identify the reason for large N2 peaks Much time invested. Gate valve exchanged. Peaks smaller but still present.

REX linac shutdown works

• IHS cavity stability above 50kWCoupling loop dismounted and cleaned, checked cavity adaptation, loop gain… -> Problem not fully solved, still too many interruption due to reflected power

• Linac water cooling circuits consolidationNew interlocks, replacement of damaged pipes, maintenance of IHS closed circuit

• Amplifier cavities and RF tubes cleaningLong time without maintenance, insufficient air filtration

• RF room ventilationChanged to a close circuit ventilationUnfortunately the cooling unit is not adapted to this mode of operation -> Need a new cooling unit

• Replacement of magnetic steerersA project has been started for the replacement of the linac steerers during shutdown 2008-09

REX status

The whole REX machine is up running (diffciult startup as always)

Tricky 9C(O) and 10C(O) beams first experiment -> After some struggle 10C beam could be accelerated

Linac well setup – scaleable:- A beam of 10C was delivered at 2.9MeV/u during the first run- Sstripping foils were used 10C3+ -> 10C6+ (80% efficiency / background free)

1. Test mass separation inside the trap Improve the REX decay analyses prog. + verify this with tests

2. Beam (cw and pulsed) from RFQ cooler into REX dedicated tests necessary (no time during the startup)

3. 35Ar/35Cl suppression postponedno time before the C(O) runafter the run the target ion source broke

4. Emittance measurements for linac started

5. Injection of Minimono (1+ ECRIS) into REXTRAP

FE6 and Off-line

• Vacuum equipment installed

• Extensive testing of beam optics

• Preparation for installation– Specifications for software

and hardware under way

• Beam energy measurement device installed for the precise measurement (+/- 0.1V) of secondary beams.

• Rapid gas leak valve integrated into off line to simulate effusion processes through target and ion source systems

HIE-ISOLDE R&D status

Work has started on the main work packages, namely Cavity RF design, cavity manufacturing, cryomodule design, cryogenic system design and beam dynamics. Preparatory work on other work packages has started, we are still in line for the delivery of the Technical Design Report by end 2009.
