I’m delighted to extend a very warm welcome to all the riders and their teams to the sixth edition of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race (CEGORR). Welcome also to all of our special guests and fans and particularly to those attending for the first time.
The Geelong, Surf Coast and Bellarine regions, which are home to the CEGORR, are amongst my favourite cycling destinations in the world. I hope you all get a chance to take in the spectacular scenery and that you enjoy your time here.
Also, we salute the many volunteers and officials who have travelled to join us for this great event and we thank them for their continued support.
Personally, I am very excited about the Deakin University Elite Women’s Road Race being elevated to UCI Women’s WorldTour in 2020 and being listed as the first WWT race on the 2020 UCI racing calendar.
This is the result of the continued support and commitment to women in professional sport from Deakin University, Visit Victoria and the Victorian Government, and sees equal prize money now being awarded in all women’s CEGORR events.
A prominent person in making this happen has been Professor Jane den Hollander AO and retired Vice Chancellor of Deakin University. Professor den Hollander and the Deakin University’s substantial support and passion for this race has been instrumental in the success of the Elite Women’s Road Race, as partner and supporter of women’s cycling. Many thanks and gratitude to you all!
So, get ready for this weekend to witness the best women’s and men’s teams in the world competing for the highly
recognised and sort after UCI WorldTour 1 Day Classic victories right here in Geelong; the city and home of the 2010 UCI World Championships.
Good luck as well to all those participating in the Swisse People’s Ride! Thousands of people, of all ages and abilities, will ride alongside Cadel Evans and many other famous ex pro-cyclists and personalities, on the same course as the professionals will race later the same day.
Furthermore, I would like to make a special mention of Visit Victoria - event owners & organisers, the Victorian Government and Signature Sport for their invaluable contribution and Cadel Evans himself, whose support and vision has made this event a reality to be experienced and enjoyed by so many.
We are very grateful to the Sport Projects team, bringing in their expertise in cycling event management for the third year, as well as to Cycling Australia and all the volunteers who have worked very hard to ensure the Event’s continued growth and success of today – thanks to you all for your continued support!
Finally, I wish everyone competing, the very best in achieving their personal and team goals in the 2020 Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and beyond.
Have fun and enjoy the ride!
Scott Sunderland Race Director
Welcome to Victoria, the events state and proud host of the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race for a sixth year. From pristine beaches to rainforests and the nation’s most picturesque driving and cycling experience, there’s something for everyone along the famed Great Ocean Road.Victoria’s regions are home to some of the best sporting events in Australia – including cycling’s Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race and Herald Sun Tour, surfing’s iconic Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach, the Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at Phillip Island and, next year, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup cricket in Geelong.Since 2014, the Andrews Labor Government has supported more than 200 regional events, drawing visitors from far and wide and keeping our bars, restaurants and hotels buzzing while boosting local jobs. With more local and international visitors travelling to regional Victoria than ever, events like the Cadel Evans Great Ocean
Road Race showcase the best our regions have to offer. I’d like to offer the best of luck to all riders involved in this four-day festival and note how terrific it is that men and women will be competing for equal prize money. Also, a warm welcome to all support staff and officials for helping to make the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race such a great success story.I hope you all enjoy this world-class event and take the opportunity to explore all that Geelong and the Surf Coast have to offer.
