Technical GUIDE OUTDOOR WOOD FLOORS The outdoor floors are raised constructions made up of structural elements that differ in size depending on the individual project. Outdoor flooring, commonly called decking, is made up of solid wood boards attached using the pre-assembled JuAn® clips mounting system to the supporting aluminium substructure specifically for raised floors. The revolutionary JuAn® clips mounting system made up of weather resistance plastic clips cuts the installation time in half. This makes installation quick and practical, without the need for screw guns, nails or screws. The centre distance of the substructure optimises the solid wood boards, thus preventing material lost due to trimming.

Technical GUIDE CHARACTERISTICS The convex profile represents the best solution in terms of comfort, dimensional stability and water runoff from the surface. The longitudinal incisions on the back of the planks allow fast jointing to the substructure and gives great stability against twisting. Solid decking boards are supplied in Ash from Fontaines, Tek, and Ipé Accoya®. FINISH The boards can be supplied in the version Outnature and unfinished wood.

The innovative OUTNATURE finishing system with a natural oil based nourishes the wood in-depth, creating a protective barrier against ageing and cracking. Unlike conventional oils, OUTNATURE does not darken the wood surface and does not require sanding during maintenance. With its special formula, OUTNATURE prevents risks of cracking due to typical application of water-based products during the summer and on woods that are particularly resistant to humidity such as thermally treated ash. RAW WOOD The decking boards with raw wood surface predisposed to be finished in work after laying. The finishing treatment protects the wood from oxidation phenomena generated by UV rays, as well as limits the formation of fissures and cracks generated by climatic conditions.

It is advisable to protect the wood after installation and especially on end side using oil or paraffin. Margaritelli S.p.A. Fraz. Miralduolo 06089 Torgiano - Perugia - Italy - Tel. +39.075.988.681 Fax +39.075.988.90.43 - [email protected] - www.listonegiordano.com | 3

Technical GUIDE DURABILITY OF WOOD FOR OUTDOOR USE The durability of wood is defined as the capacity to withstand the attacks of wood decay. Biological durability can be natural (as the case of Teak and

Ipé) if conferred by naturally extracts of wood, or induced (as the case of Heat treated Ash) if conferred by a specific treatment.

The long lasting of a wooden deck depends on the biological durability of the wood, also from the constructive characteristics and from the weather conditions where it is built. Class of durability and class of use for outdoor use are defined by international standard specifications.

UNI EN 350 - Durability of wood and-based products. Natural durability of solid wood. Guide to the principles of testing and classification of the natural durability of wood.

DIMENSIONAL STABILITY Wood used for outdoor flooring is exposed to extreme climatic conditions, especially moisture and drought. Frequent periods of humidity can bring about swellings. Otherwise, prolonged drought periods cause shrinks and cracks in some cases. Outdoor wood floor will be more or less stable in according with moisture content and climate conditions of place where is installed. Wooden decking moisture content must be in according with climate conditions. Dimensional stability depends to different kind of wood and to the dimensions of single decking boards. Wooden decking boards will be more stable as lower will be ratio width/thickness. At same time, decking boards 1200/2000 mm length will be more stable than 2400 mm and longer. Margaritelli S.p.A. Technical GUIDE HEAT TREATMENT OF WOOD Heat treatment of wood is a process to improve biological and technological properties using high temperature. The heat-treatment of the wood is the last ring of the productive chain, based upon the use of renewable resources and sustainable forestry management. No chemicals are used during the treatment. The painstaking control of the production system improves the physical characteristics of the wood. The natural action of the steam, used in the heat-treatment, is strictly operated and controlled through cutting-edge equipment. The heat-treatment process develops a series of molecular reactions in the wooden structure resulting in the modification of the saturation point of the wood fibres. Therefore improving the resistance of the wood to humidity. The heat-treated wood proves to be more resistant

wood flooring in a naturally stable

and long-lasting way.

ThermoWood® process can be divided into three phases:

1) temperature increase and drying using steam 2) intensive heat treatment at peak temperature 3) cooling and remoisturing phase

Tests of laboratory conducted by the institute of technology Arts et Métiers ParisTech de Cluny and Lermab of Epinal, certify that heat treated ash, in according to the cycle Margaritelli, is durable class 1 in according to EN 350 -2 and class IV of use in according to EN 335 -2

. Heat treated ash by Margaritelli can also be used in situations to contact with soil.

ACETILATION TREATMENT OF ACCOYA® Accoya® is the brand name of a treated wood created via the acetylation wood modification process using acetic anhydride. Wood is protected by non-toxic treatment and uses fast-growing softwood timber from sustainable sources as Pinus radiata from New Zealand. Accoya® is large used for decking and situations where wood is wet and close to or in contact with the ground, demand a durable wood that is an effective mould and insect barrier. Acetylation has been shown to significantly improve performance against brown rot, white rot and soft rot. Accoya wood has also proven to be an effective barrier to wood destroying insect damage in multiple field tests and laboratory trails undertaken in many locations in the world. This includes tests with multiple species of termites. The treated wood has very high durability and dimensional stability allowing for reduced maintenance and is a viable alternative even to high-energy man-made materials."Accoya® wood is classified durable class 1 (EN 350-2) and durable in use 50 years not in contact with the ground and 25 years under permanent humidity. Technical GUIDE Tek Teak represents one of best wood for outdoor use. Native from South East Asia, it is one of the few woods in the world containing a very high concentration of natural oil which repels water, keeping it from wood decay, cracking and those of typical problems of wood outdoor exposed. For that reason, Teak wood has been used since Romains as structural timber and boat construction material. Oil finishing treatments gives an elegant honey surface aspect of decking floor. Over time it will age naturally into an elegant gray color.

Technical GUIDE

Figure 6: top, substructure KIT 50 used as cover rail on a wood structure INSTALLATION ON UNCONSOLIDATE SOIL USE OF KIT 118-228 A wooden decking floor on not consolidated ground must be realized using height-adjustable KIT 118-228. A very compact oil is needed to give stability. It is preferably use the gravel and stabilized. Construction of decks on a ground or not consolidated soil requires the use of a protective sheet against of the growing of weeds. The supports are disposed in staggered rows at a distance within 950 mm and 1200 mm along the aluminium beams. We recommend to fix the adjustable height pedestals with screws or silane glue if possible.

USE OF KIT 50 AS COVER RAIL The use of KIT 50 fixed height on unconsolidated soil requires the construction of a stable substructure. The solution fixed height KIT 50 has been designed to be insert inside wood beams or metal width 60 mm. For this reason, the construction of a floor can be realized by building a frame of two substructures (one on other). Margaritelli S.p.A. Fraz. Technical GUIDE INSTALLATION ON CONSOLIDATE SOIL CONSTRUCTION SUBSTRUCTURE ON CONCRETE SOIL The construction of outdoor flooring on a consolidated soil can be realized using the complete KIT 50 or KIT 60. All Items can be fixed to concrete soil. It is always advisable to carry out an inspection to verify the status of the soil before installation. It is important to avoid risk of humidity making drill or holes on concrete soil. DISPOSAL OF SUBSTRUCTURE Place the substructure according to the length of the planks. The choice right distance between joists must be done in order to avoid lost materials done by cuts during the laying. Distance (s) must always be between 300/450 mm. Figure 7 and 8: at the top. On the left, substructure adjustable height willing to distance the between 300 and 450 mm. The distance (d) of pedestals on aluminium beams must be of 950 mm in public buildings, while up to 1200 mm in the case of private residential. To the right, substructure fixed height KIT 60, the spacing between aluminium items (i) follows a distance between 300 and 450 mm, while positioning the supports pads must be 200 mm along the longitudinal axis of aluminium items.

FIXING THE LISTS The installation of decking boards must be realized after disposition of substructure. The jointing to the substructure is done by pressing the planks on clip JuAn®. Figure 9 and 10: at the top. On the left, the laying of the lists is done by joining the decking boards to the substructure. It is always recommended to set the heads at a topside. To the right, the laying of the boards is completed by fit-in gradually one after the other. It is recommended to set the first lists spaced 1-2 m far in order to consolidate the structure during installation. Margaritelli S.p.A. Fraz. Technical GUIDE REMOVING OF DECKING BOARDS The deckking boards can be removed using the special keys. The simultaneous action of the keys allows the lifting of the clip from the aluminium structure. It performs the operations of ordinary maintenance (cleaning and inspection of the zones of outflow) and replacement of dameged lists. Figure 15: top left, inserting the keys within apposite shape. Top right, Figure 16: key rotation along their axis and The keys are inserted into the escape and rotated below the latch. Movement must be simultaneous because only in that case clips are removed completely. These can be repositioned by inserting the clip and making pressure on special holes along aluminium joists. FigureAsinis17, top left: the keys are driven simultaneously. Figure 18: top right, the action creates the detachment of the clips from the substructure without compromising the The substitution of the lists does not require removal part of floor. NUMBER OF LAYERS 2 THE PRODUCT VERSIONS Oil decking is proposed in the variant Tek (recommended for wood Teak and Ipe) and special and lightly pigmented Thermowood (recommended for heat treated ash). The finishing Tek guarantees a lower resistance against UV rays than the version thermowood. The variant Tek therefore requires a periodic renewal every 6 months. Thermowood version, developed for thermally treated wood not darkens the wood ash and protects the wood by absorption of UV rays. We recommend a periodic renewal every 6-12 months. COMPOSITION OF FORMULATED Product based on vegetable oils of vegetable origin (sunflower oil, safflower oil, soybean oil, drying agents and water repellent additives aromatic mineral white spirits). The formulation respects the maximum content of VOC according to EU Directive 2004/42 / EC. The product may be stored in a dry place for more than 5 years in the original sealed packaging. Product can be used in case of frost after 24-36 hours in a place with room temperature.

PREPARATION OF WOOD Oil decking can protect all kind of wood used for construction of wooden floors. However, the woods have different biological characteristics and permeability. We recommend to leave the wood surface to open air and rich mining for about 30 days of work before the finish treatment. The application of oil on the decking gray surfaces heavily aged requests a preliminary cleaning with ANTIGRAY Power-Gel. The wooden floor, carefully restored become ready to receive the finish if moisture balance reaches a value <20%. The application of decking oil on surfaces previously finished with paint or impregnating water based requires the removal of previous finish with a product stripper or by sanding. Technical GUIDE APPLICATION Open the package and mix thoroughly before application. Decking oil is a product that can be applied with a brush (in the case of large surfaces) and by small brush or rag (in the case of small surfaces). Decking oil is a product with high yield, it is applied by spreading a uniform coat following the grain of the wood. Any excess product can be removed with a cloth or rag. The drying oil requires 12 hours in normal weather conditions (23 ° C / 50% humidity). Low temperatures and periods of high humidity increase the drying oil. Ribbed surfaces or particularly deteriorated can absorb a larger quantity of oil than the average value stated. Clean all equipment with a special cleanser contains no benzene. The product should be stored out of reach of children.

Avoid contact with eyes and skin. Wash thoroughly with water in case of contact and consult your doctor. Use the product only in ventilated areas. The product contains 2-butanone-oxine. May cause allergic reactions. Wash clothing immediately or rags soaked or store them in an airtight environment. APPEARANCE OF WOOD Application of the variant on wood Ipe Tek Tek and causes a brown and darkens strongly Ash wood. Technical GUIDE GREY REMOVER POWER-GEL GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF PRODUCT Removes the grey from all types of wood and wooden products aged after outside. Restore the original appearance of the wood making the surface suitable for the renewal of the finishing treatment. The product works only on grey wood, therefore. Traces of paint must first removed mechanically (with a strong brushing or sanding) or chemically with the aid of a strong paint remover.

COMPOSITION OF FORMULA Product based on biodegradable oxalic acid concentration of <5%. Grey remover does not contain amines, solvents, formaldehyde or combinations of chlorine. USE OF PRODUCT

1) Apply the product on wood surface (preferably wet) to form an even layer, then leave for 10-15 minutes. ANTIGRAY works on grey zones of wood, usually defined within a few microns from the surface. The action of product is ensured by formulated gel, which limits the evaporation

of the active compounds. It is recommended to perform the treatment in the first hours of the day.

2) Brush the surface with a nylon bristle brush or broom (do not use wire brushes). The operation can be carried out with a

simple brush (for small areas), with a rotary floor machine (only recommended on outdoor flooring with smooth surface) or floor cleaning machine (recommended of brushed surfaces eg. Ash or stripes). Brushing should be strictly practiced on damp surfaces. The hottest hours of the day, especially in summer, can cause drying of the product. Therefore, for best results, it is recommended to wet the surface before brushing if the surface is dry after a few minutes of use.

3) Rinse with water. It serves to eliminate pulp wood formed after brushing. We recommend to use floor cleaning machine with

suction pump or a pressure washer (max 60 bar). Very important is the amplitude of the water jet and proximity from surface of wood. The water jet must be spread and distant from the surface so as not to damage the wood. Some traces of gray may be still visible after treatment. This is caused by uneven application of product on some parts of wood floor. If necessary, repeat the operation. The wood is dry and good to receive the finish after 2-3 days.

Technical GUIDE TECHNICAL INFORMATIONS Wood is a "living" material that, due to its nature ,is subject to changes due to environmental factors such as exposure, temperature, rain and humidity as well as daily use. For example, it is necessary to know that: BIOLOGICAL DURABILITY Heat-treated Ash, Teak and Ipé wood floors have the best resistance to biological wood alterations. These floors in solid wood do not required additional treatments to improve resistance to wood pathogens. RAISED STRUCTURE Outdoor floors are raised structures specifically designed to ensure long-life of the wood outdoors. The construction of a raised floor allows water to flow away and promotes ventilation of the structure, preventing the formation of permanent humid areas. Attaching the boards and strips directly to the ground can cause a permanent accumulation of humidity, leading to conditions for the development of the primary wood pathogens. Therefore, we recommend not attaching the boards and strips directly to the ground and to always used raised structures. COLOUR The colour of the wood floor depends not only on the wood fibre but also on certain substances, called extracts, that are naturally present in the wood. These substances provide elevated and natural biological durability to woods like Teak and Ipé. Heat treated Ash has a dark brown colour due to the treatment cycle used on the raw material. Due to the high extract content, tropical woods are particularly subject to colour alterations due to heavy and rapid oxidation; this can lead to colour differences and changes even on elements that were originally similar. The oxidation phenomenon can highlight the formation of silica that is naturally present in the wood structure. AGEING Long exposure of the floor to the sun's rays leads to a colour change, giving the wood a uniform grey colour. This is a natural and inevitable phenomenon on woods used outdoors. This comes from the prolonged action of UV rays which, alternating with the washing out action of the rain, determine the quickness of the phenomenon. This occurs more with stronger sun rays, namely during the summer and with southern exposure. Wood ageing is a phenomenon that only affects the surface of the wood and does not impact its mechanical and structural characteristics. CLIMATE CONDITIONS Wood is naturally subject to dimensional changes depending upon the humidity and temperature. It is natural to have size variations from the absorption or loss of humidity in the wood due to the climate in the location in which the floor is installed. For this reason, outdoor floors must always be built with a space between the boards. Extreme conditions such as drought or high humidity can cause very high tension inside the wood. In serious cases this can lead to the appearance of cracks in some boards (due to sliding between the growth rings resulting from exceeding the elastic compression limit). FRACTURES The nature of the wood along with the typical flamed veining from tangential cutting, leads to possible slight fractures near the pith. This phenomenon, which is a characteristic of wood, can be more significant when the floor is exposed to violent and sudden climate changes. FINISH The finish on outdoor floors is protective in nature. A finish treatment is proposed after installing the floor. Tropical woods are generally treated with oils for outdoor floors. Finish products that are oil-based and rich in iron oxides greatly darken ash. For this reason, a specific oil-based finish for heat treated wood is recommended to better protect and enhance the grain of Ash. MAINTENANCE Protection is a very important and influential factor against ageing from UV rays. The periodic nourishment of wood with routine maintenance products, renews the protective action of the UV filters. We recommend it be done at least twice a year. Without periodic maintenance, the appearance of the wood will change, inevitably changing to grey. MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS All wood species used for outdoor floors have mechanical characteristics that fully ensure the performance required for that use. Despite this, stress due to impacts or falling objects as well as concentrated high loads (high heeled shoes, ladders, etc.) can cause surface lacerations. The wood does not have uniform characteristics like synthetic materials. This means that two floors made of the same type of wood can never look identical. For the same reason, a sample made up of a few boards can only give an idea of the appearance of the entire floor but can never demonstrate the final result in all details. The phenomenon described above are part of the nature of wood floors and cannot be considered defects. USE AND MAINTENANCE CONDITIONS The instructions for correct use and maintenance of the floor are available on the website, www.listonegiordano.com, in the section containing the documentation.
