CUMMINS ENGINES – COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS FOR 1000/2000/3000/4000 & TC10 TRANSMISSIONS
WITH ALLISON 4TH & 5TH GENERATION CONTROLS
1.0 PURPOSEThe purpose of this document is to summarize engine/transmission electronic interface issues, cali-bration issues, and customer-programmable parameters for Cummins Engines used with Allison transmissions. Engine-Transmission communication requirements that apply to all engines can be found in TD161-1, General Communication Requirements for Various Combinations of Engine and Transmission Controls.
NOTE: In addition to the requirements in this document, the Oil Field Series (OFS) models must meet specialized controls interface requirements which are very specific for each engine model or engine family. Because these requirements relate only to the OFS models used in the oil field vocations, a separate document dedicated to the OFS has been created. Refer to Technical Document (TD) 183, Application Requirements for the Oil Field Series Transmissions, for the additional requirements.
2.0 REFERENCED DOCUMENTSUnless otherwise noted, all documents referenced in this document may be found in the Extranet channel of the Allison Transmission website, www.allisontransmission.com. To locate the referenced documents look for Tech Data under the Engineering heading on the Extranet home page. In this document, these references are identified by italic font. Contact your Allison Transmission represen-tative if you do not have access to the Allison Transmission Extranet. A list of referenced documents can be found at the end of this document.
3.0 GENERAL3.1 ENGINE MANAGEMENTAllison 5th Generation ControlsBased on the engine selected when the TCM calibration is defined, Allison 5th Generation Controls automatically enables Engine Management features such as SEM and LRTP. With all Cummins en-gines, Allison 5th Generation Controls uses the EC1 Engine Moment of Inertia that is broadcast when SEM is enabled.
Allison 4th Generation ControlsSome transmission shift calibrations may be used only with engines that support shift energy man-agement (SEM) and low range torque protection (LRTP). Certain engine / transmission combinations require use of a shift calibration with the SEM/LRTP feature, as tabulated in the appendices. Refer to Allison Transmission Application Requirements for additional information regarding SEM and LRTP.
3.2 NOMENCLATUREThroughout this document are references to engine or transmission control parameters and a selec-tion of settings for each parameter. In order to maintain consistency in the presentation of this infor-mation, parameter names are in bold type and settings are in italic type.
The information which follows has been subdivided by EPA certification years:• MY13 certified engines• MY10–MY12 certified engines• MY07–MY09 certified engines• MY06 and earlier certified engines
