EMO launched a Technical Dictionary of Mortars* in 4 languages:

English | French | Germany | Spanish

* EMOdico was an original idea of Mr. Francis Thomasson

supported by many other of his EMO colleagues.

• In 2001, a fifth country joined EMOdico: Portugal.

• In 2005 (EMO Meetings in Stratford-upon-Avon), the Chinese Mortar Association translated EMOdico into Chinese.

A full EMOdico revision was proposed, under the following principles:

1. Maintaining the original structure (Chapters and words)

2. Introducing new words (Sustainability and others*)

3. New languages: Italian, Dutch, Russian, etc.

4. Adding 2 new Chapters:

• Ch. 6 Application Tools & Equipment

• Ch. 7 Main Pathologies

These new Chapters require photos to illustrate the concepts. * Some new words were inspired in definitions proposed by Prof. G. Allen (Bristol University, UK), in his book “Hydraulic Lime Mortar”, who authorize their use.

1. English is the core language

2. A codification system is necessary to allow searching for the different translations of any word

in the Data Base.

Cracking (161GB) Cracking is as a linear discontinuity produced by the fracture of a mortar.

Cracking is the most common pathology, ranging from a thickness of several microns to a few centimeters in severe situations.

Cracking can be oriented or randomized.

Fissures (161FR) La fissuration est une discontinuité linéaire produite par une rupture du mortier.

La fissuration est la pathologie la plus habituelle, allant de quelques microns à plusieurs centimètres dans les situations les plus graves.

La fissuration peut être orientée ou aléatoire dans tous les sens.
