Operational Readiness Assurance

“Operational Readiness Assurance means doing everything required to ensure the asset performs

as expected.”

Operational Readiness Assurance (ORA) provides confidence that a plant has a seamless transition from design to operation and that production targets are met in the first years of the asset’s life. ORA is a rigorous process spanning engineering, construction, commissioning, handover and operation that ensures faster ramp-up with fewer delays. Systems, procedures and training to support the maintenance and operation of the asset gives confidence to the operations and does not result in a reduction of the whole of life cost of the asset. The application of ORA ensures the asset performs to its potential and maximises the return on stakeholder investment.

AMEC’s greenfield capability encompasses detailed design, procurement, construction and project management services for new-build oil and gas facilities worldwide.

Our reputation for delivering complex projects in a range of environments ranging from frozen Arctic seas to searing desert heat has been built over many years of service to the industry.

Upstream:delivering challenging and complex projects worldwide

ameclarastia.comWorldwide. Responsibly. For the long term.

What we doWe increase customer revenues by maximising uptime and increasing plant capacity. This is achieved by debottlenecking and carrying out process reviews to extend nameplate capacities and allow safe operation. We have niche skills in process control & operability and, by improving plant optimisation, we are able to allow operating setpoints to be increased without risking spurious alarms and trips.

Our engineers are capable of taking ownership of gas turbines and gas compressors to identify and deliver tangible performance improvements. We have specialists in gas turbine controls and gas compressor controls who can optimise and support existing control systems to match current operating requirements.

Energy efficiency has become increasingly important to our clients and we have a dedicated team of energy and emissions specialists who can benchmark an asset and identity immediate opportunities to reduce the site’s carbon footprint. This work tends to be cash neutral or better for our clients as the efficiency savings achieved more than pay for the cost of the work.

Measurement, audit and allocation of hydrocarbons and emissions is another key area where we can add value by ensuring that measurement systems are designed, operated and maintained to meet regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

We have an asset integrity capability which enables us to help our clients review and optimise their maintenance strategies to ensure that critical equipment is adequately inspected and maintained to

achieve high availability in a safe manner, without incurring excessive operating costs.

Why we are differentWe focus on delivering operational excellence and address both the technical and the softer people issues to get a sustainable result. We treat operating problems as multi-dimensional challenges and apply a variety of skills sets, tools and methodologies to maximise value added. We close the project cycle and feedback operational best practices and lessons learned into our front end designs.

What we doOur greenfield expertise allows us to take projects from early project definition through to commissioning and handover. The services can be executed under a variety of contracting models, ranging from standalone detailed engineering scope through to complete EPCM (engineer, procure, construction, maintenance) or PMC (project management contracting) responsibility.

Upstream oil and gas projects have always been a large part of our business. We are able to execute a wide range of projects, ranging from small generic designs through to complex bespoke facilities for harsh environments. Our capability is strong both onshore and offshore.

Why we are differentOur greenfield capability incorporates industry leading program and project management skills, innovative technology, quality detailed engineering services and

renowned major projects delivery expertise.

Our leading team of experts cover the full range of skills required for even the most demanding projects.AMEC has performed the detailed design and offshore hook-up for the two largest floatover installed topsides in the world at the time. For a number of years AMEC also held the record for engineering the largest FPSO ever constructed.

ExperienceAMEC has over 10 years Arctic experience supporting several major upstream projects. These projects require bespoke engineering solutions and development of innovative technology to cope with the harsh conditions. Onshore Gas TerminalAMEC responsibility includes detailed design, procurement, supply, fabrication, installation, construction, calibration, testing, pre-commissioning and commissioning,

then assisting the operations team in start-up of hydrocarbon systems, including the provision of vendor representative services, for an onshore gas reception terminal.

The area where the project is constructed is extremely environmentally sensitive, necessitating the design of a complex water treatment system. The water treatment plant removes impurities such as minute amounts of naturally occurring heavy metals and salts, prior to disposal of the water.

Who we areWe supply high-value consultancy, engineering and project management services to the world’s energy, power and process industries.

Floating production and deepwater:global capability

What we doWe design, engineer and manage floating production and deepwater solutions. For example, we engineered BP Buchan in 1997 – the first North Sea floater designed for harsh conditions. We also designed the Curlew floating production, storage and offloading vessel (FPSO) – an industry first with hydrocarbon production 19 months after contract award. Our experience also includes Shell’s Bonga FPSO for offshore Nigeria and ExxonMobil’s Kizomba A and B FPSOs for offshore Angola – the world’s largest FPSOs.

Why we are differentWe are leaders in ‘front-end’ and project management services, using innovative technology and world-class engineering services consistently to deliver major projects successfully, safely and sustainably. Our strategic partnerships have produced significant cost savings, faster project delivery and greater long-term value to our customers.

AMEC Business Consulting: advice, support and assurance in field development and project delivery

Delivering varied oil and gas projects for hundreds of companies across many frontier regions over the last thirty years makes AMEC ideally placed to provide these value-adding consultancy services.

Using AMEC’s knowledge, resources and international perspective to help you to identify and optimise business opportunities, run your operations effectively, develop your staff and achieve maximum value for your assets throughout their entire life.

Brownfield projects: renewed value for existing assets

Why are we differentThe best endorsement of AMEC’s ability to deliver safely, on time, on budget and to the right quality in the brownfield environment is to look at AMEC’s portfolio of repeat business. The breadth and depth of our brownfield capabilities, coupled with niche services offered by AMEC’s other businesses and the ability for our contracts to tap into that knowledge, set us apart from our competition.

AMEC is focused on understanding customer requirements, listening to their objectives and adding value where necessary, all while executing the work safely, on time and on budget.

ExperienceBG UK Upstream assets contractSince 2006 AMEC has been providing engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning and project management services to BG Group’s UK Upstream assets.

In 2011 the contract was not only extended for the third time, but additional scope of work was added, in effect tripling the size of the services supplied. AMEC now provides services for all of the BG Group facilities in the central North Sea, including Armada, North Everest and Lomond platforms.

Britannia Additional Accommodation projectThis is one of AMEC’s flagship projects and has been recognised as “best in class” across all aspects of project delivery by an Independent Project Analysis (IPA) global independent bench-marking organisation. Key achievements of delivering the 300 tonne accommodation modules and support structure included: 9.1 productive hours per man per shift offshore, handover of accommodation achieved three weeks ahead of baseline schedule and the final costs within five percent of baseline budget.

BP North Sea Projects programme managementIn 2011 AMEC have added a programme management contract for BP’s existing portfolio of onshore and offshore North Sea projects. As part of the BP-AMEC onshore global agreement announced last year, this ‘evergreen’ award will see AMEC providing engineering and project management services to BP’s North Sea Region. The projects are located to the west of Shetland, Northern North Sea, Southern North Sea and the Norwegian sector of the North Sea. Under this long-term, performance-based contract, AMEC’s work will range from front-end engineering design (FEED) through to construction management for multiple EPC (engineering, procure, construct) projects. Since 2008 AMEC also has a strategic global agreement with BP International Limited to provide engineering and project management services for BP’s offshore developments around the world.

AMEC Business Consulting: advice, support and assurance in field development and project delivery

What we doAMEC Business Consulting’s remit is to interact with its customers and then, once the issues involved have been fully identified, defined and understood, to offer focused support and assurance in the form of advice, opinion, recommendations, strategies and solutions which are specific to each customer’s needs and issues.

Why we are differentAMEC Business Consulting’s service offerings are underpinned by AMEC’s wider oil and gas engineering and project management expertise. In developing bespoke solutions for its customers, AMEC Business Consulting complements its skills with tools, systems and processes from within the wider AMEC community and from other organisations.

While a number of consultancies and contractors offer some of these services, we believe that this is the first time a single organisation has provided such a wide array of integrated services.

ExperienceJSC National Company KazMunayGas (KMG), the National Oil Company of Kazakhstan, has engaged AMEC Business Consulting as a strategic partner to provide technical consulting services.

The contract covers consultancy services related to field development planning, programme management, project management and implementation and other associated activities where AMEC Business Consulting will provide assurance, support and advice to KMG’s management of its oil and gas assets in Kazakhstan. These assets include the Kashagan oil field in the north Caspian Sea, the largest field discovered in the last 30 years. As a key partner to KMG, AMEC’s work will support KMG in delivering its strategy to achieve optimum value from its reserves.

Brownfield projects: renewed value for existing assets

AMEC’s innovative thinking in engineering and construction has played a key role in major brownfield projects worldwide, from Shell’s Brent offshore field refurbishment of the late 1980s to Kuwait Oil Company’s current onshore field rehabilitation project.

As an oil and gas producing region matures, a shift in emphasis occurs towards increasing production and bringing outlying ‘satellite’ fields into production through existing facilities.Refurbishment, overhauling, re-engineering and retrofitting may be required, all activities whichfall into the category of brownfield engineering.

Offshore brownfield engineering projects typically involve subsea tiebacks to existing platforms/

FPSOs, new modules to be integrated into existing platform facilities, processing facilities to beupgraded and old modules to be decommissioned.

Onshore, the work could include the debottlenecking of Gas-Oil Separation Plants (GOSPs),Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) programmes and the expansion of facilities such as gathering centres, booster compression and pumping stations, and tank farms.

Environmental Services:a solutions-driven approach

ameclarastia.comWorldwide. Responsibly. For the long term. ameclarastia.comWorldwide. Responsibly. For the long term.

AMEC’s track record in providing assured delivery of the most complex facilities for the oil and gassector is reinforced by understanding of the environmental, social and health drivers affecting successful

project completion. At each stageof the project life cycle AMEC is able to access skilled environmental professionals in hundreds of locations around the world.

AMEC is uniquely suited to provide project supportto the oil and gas industry at all stages in the lifecycle, from select through development, operation to decommissioning and back to select.

Operations and maintenance

AMEC advocates that Operations and Maintenance (O&M) support should consider the lifecycle of the asset, and should not be treated as a series of disconnected projects. Each phase in an asset’s lifecycle will impact the next with decisions made during the design, influencing the direction and choices available later in the asset’s life.

The AMEC Operational Readiness Assurance approach provides a range of services that ensure that risk based maintenance and operational procedures are in place. When in operating mode it is necessary to continuously re-assess maintenance strategies to ensure an appropriate level of maintenance is being applied and proportionate to the equipment concerned.

Our structured and diligent approach is based upon:

- What maintenance to do - How to do maintenance

- How and what to change to make it happen - How and what results to measure

The continuous review and improve process requires the gathering and analysis of data relating to equipment performance, building on the accumulated knowledge.

Excessive or inappropriate maintenance generates risks to integrity and productivity through unnecessary interruptions and shutdowns as well as increasing OPEX.

AMEC draw upon a global knowledge pool, developed over almost 40 years of industry experience to provide this expertise across the full asset lifecycle. Our risk based maintenance strategies, optimised operational strategies and collaborative procedures and performance standards deliver maximum value to OPEX. There are many tools and techniques available to enhance and improve maintenance, reliability and availability and AMEC are practised in each, however we concur with the belief that great companies are great because they simply do the basics very well.

AMEC is a focused supplier of high-value consultancy, engineering, operations and project management services to the world’s energy, power and process industries.

Described as an ‘engineering tour de force’, the Ichthys project will include the world’s largest floating gas and the second longest subsea gas pipeline in the world. It will produce up to 10 million tonnes of LNG a year.

AMEC’s engineering work covers the semi-submersible central processing facility, a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) unit for condensate treatmentand storage, the umbilicals, risers and flowlines and an 850-km gas

export pipeline to Darwin.

AMEC’s other recent offshore FEED projects include the Azeri, Chirag, deepwater Guneshli (ACG) Full Field Development, Phase 3 in the Azerbaijani sector of the Caspian Sea, SEIC’s Sakhalin II off the Russia Far East, BOL’s Britannia project and Shell’s Shearwater development.

In the onshore sector, the breadth of AMEC’s experience is demonstrated by a range of projects including onshore processing facilities, refineries and terminals with facilities for loading (marine, rail or road) and/or pipeline

transmission. AMEC’s experience ranges from individual studies and FEEDs through to engineering and modification support service contracts with various customers for onshore oil and gas fields, refineries and terminals.

In Kuwait, AMEC’s prestigious project management services contract for Kuwait Oil Company’s rehabilitation programme for their onshore fields includes a number of FEED projects to debottleneck and modernie the facilities. AMEC performs the work both in Kuwait and from its engineering offices in the UK.

Project Management Services

AMEC has developed and refined state-of-the-art systems, procedures and specifications for the management and control of engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of process and industrial facilities worldwide.

Our centres of excellence in PMS delivery are in the Middle East and China.

In a typical PMS contract, AMEC would work in an integrated team with its customer. Having set up the overall project management and control procedures on a project, AMEC would provide construction management advice and support, health, safety, sustainabiliity, environmental and quality (HSSEQ) direction and support, and commissioning and start-up management support.

AMEC has been providing Project Management Services to international customers on a wide variety of major projects for over 35 years.

Detailed Engineering:Engineering Design Integrity Workflow

Detailed Design is broken into seven phases:1 Scope Definition and Engineering Execution Strategy

2 Commencement of Detailed Design

3 Initial Design Development and Hazard Identification

4 Initial Design Review & Audit

5 Approval for Design (AFD)

6 Approval for Construction (AFC)

7 Design Close-Out

As the deliverables and activities in each phase are completed, work can transition into the next phase.Situations will arise when work will need to be be done out of sequence, typically to meet a demanding project schedule. Use of the EDIW allows the risks of out-of-sequence working to be identified and the necessary mitigation strategies to be put in place.

AMEC’s corporate governance and assurance of Engineering will measure compliance with theEDIW workflow and ensure out-of-phase working is being identified and managed.

Project Management Services

ExperienceOne of AMEC’s largest current contracts is with the Kuwait Oil Company, in support of its major programme to rehabilitate and modernise its onshore oilfields, and double its production. AMEC’s scope covers a broad range of project management services for gathering centres, booster stations and pipelines, among others. In addition and as a result of AMEC’s extensive PMS experience, Kuwait Energy Company (KEC) has awarded a contract to AMEC for provision of concept, FEED (front end engineering design) and project management consultancy for KEC’s Siba onshore gas field project in Southern Iraq.

AMEC provides project management services to the offshore sector. In the largest oil-related program management consultancy (PMC) contract ever awarded by the Zakum Development Company (Zadco), AMEC is providing services

for the multi-billion dollar full field development of the Upper Zakum field. The services extend from concept stage through front-end engineering design, design, construction and commissioning of several projects.

The projects include the replacement of the 60km main subsea oil pipeline, expansion of onshore-offshore gas treatment facilities, development of the east and west areas of the field, and a major program of work to increase offshore crude production capacity from 500,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 750,000bpd.

AMEC has also worked with Al Khafji Joint Operations providing project management and engineering services for customer’s Saudi operations in Kuwait and Saudi Partitioned Neutral Zone (PNZ), consisting of onshore and offshore facilities. Projects centre around Brownfield modifications to enhance

production rates and product quality, facility safety and reduced flaring.

In Kuwait, AMEC is also the main PMC contractor for KNPC; which means that the company represents, acts and deals on behalf of KNPC with supply chain in support of the customer’s three refineries at Mina Al-Ahmadi, Mina Abdulla and Shuaiba. The work to date has included: brownfield engineering and design modifications, front end engineering design (FEED) definition, bid reviews, training and knowledge transfer, among other services.

One of AMEC’s key PMS projects in China currently involves providing detailed engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, project management, as well as overall site complex integration and interface management for the $5 billion Chongqing MDI Complex.
