    ONGOINGDEVELOPMENT

In service for over fifteen years, Gripen is

the pinnacle of more than 75 years of

    Saab aircraft design and development

experience. The latest NG version is an

evolution of the aircraft, building on its

    strengths and adding further capabilities.

Gripen NG offers a range o options,

enabling users to select a bespoke aircraf

rather than a set system. Gripen E or

    example, is the single-seat airrame

    configuration that has been selected

    by Sweden.

Te C/D versions o Gripen are the

current generation o fighter. In service

around the world, they are consistently

    being upgraded and are thereore

    always ready or modern missions.

    INFORMATIONSUPPORT

Knowledge is everything in combat and knowing more

than the enemy is vital to mission success.

    o achieve inormation superiority,

fighter pilots need to be able to identiy

    enemy assets and share intelligence

and assets with wingmen, as well as be

able to have it presented to them in a

clear way. At the same time they need

to stop the enemy rom acquiring the

    same type o inormation.

    Gripen NGs sensor suite identifies

the enemy using a number o active

    and passive methods while retaining

a relatively small radar and inrared

    signature. Te onboard electronic

warare systems can also jam enemy

    sensors and approaching missiles,

while the aircrafs relatively small size

makes it difficult to detect visually.

    WEAPON SYSTEMS

Gripen NG has weapons for all types of mission, from guided glide bombs

for precision engagement with low collateral damage, to long-range and agile

air-to-air missiles and heavy anti-ship armaments. Additionally, the aircraft

has an inherent precision s trike and stand-off capability.

Te single-seat Gripen NG is equipped

with a 27 mm Mauser BK27 gun. Tis

can be used in air-to-surace attacks

against land and sea targets and is

    suitable or air policing missions.

Gripen NG can also carry pods and

    sensors or reconnaissance and special

    missions. Tese include Litening,

    Reccelite, DJRP and MRPS pods.

It is one o the easiest aircraf o its

kind to add new weapons to. Tis makes

it a avourite among weapons companies

as they can quickly and easily use Gripen

or development. For example, it was

selected or testing the Meteor missile.

Tis benefits users, as new armaments

are available to them more quickly

    compared to other aircraf.

    LOGISTICS

Gripen was originally designed for flexible deployment with a small logistical

footprint. This was due to the Swedish Air Forces policy during the cold war to

operate out of a number of dispersed bases across the country. This made it vital

to keep staff resources, support systems and spares to a minimum. As a result of

this, Gripen was designed to operate from runways only 800x16 metres in length.

This means it can land on a regular highway, which further improves its logistical

flexibility. This capability has been carried over to Gripen NG.

    AVAILABILITY

High availability is vital or small air

orces. Tese organisations rely on aircraf

that offer a long Mean ime Between

Failure (MBF) and short Mean ime

o Repair (MR). Gripen NG has been

designed with this in mind. For example,

the entire engine can be exchanged and

tested in the field in less than an hour.

    Tese properties, together with low

    maintenance requirements per flight

hour, give the aircraf higher availability

than its competitors. Gripen NG has also

    been designed or minimal turnaround

time. For example, an air-to-air combat

set up takes only 10 minutes to perorm,

    including reuelling and rearming.

    MODULARITY

    Gripen NGs modular design greatly

enhances its ability to adapt. Using

    off-the-shelf products and integratin

them in an open architecture make

    the aircraft development process v

    flexible. It also enables distributed

    development of Gripen NG in

customer nations as part of industr

    cooperation and technology

    transfer packages.

    COSTEFFICIENCY

An aircrafts lifecycle cost includes everything from

initial acquisition spend through to operational

expenses across its entire lifetime. Gripen NG has a

very low lifecycle cost compared to its competitors.

The graph to the right shows an independent study

on costs relating to next generation fighter systems.

It shows flight hour costs for Gripen C/D and was

conducted by IHS Janes, based on open sources.

Gripen NG has been further improved to continue

this trend of reducing flight hour costs.

    WE SELECT THE BEST SUPPLIERS

Saab constantly scans the market to

ensure that its customers gain value rom

the Gripen NG supply chain. For every

system category, we seek to buy the best

materials or the best possible price.

    COST CONSCIOUSNESS FROM THE START

From the very beginning, cost has been

a pivotal design parameter or Gripen.

Tis is also true or Gripen NG. Troughout

design and construction Saab has ensured that

the aircraf is easy to service and repair even

outdoors, by conscript soldiers with minimum

resources. Our engineers are asked to maximize

perormance at a set cost. Tis way, Saab avoids

expensive solutions that may not add as much

to perormance as their cost would suggest.

Cost is also a design parameter in the sense

    GRIPEN USERSAROUND THE WORLD

    GRIPEN NGWEAPONS AND PODS

    Saabs opportunities on the world

    market have been solidified and

    expanded, following the order from

Sweden for Gripen E. This has b een

    further bolstered by Brazils decision

to select Gripen NG for negotiations.

Tese events have pushed Gripen to the

oreront o the global fighter market and

mean that we are a leading player, with

increasing interest in all regions rom the

    Americas to Asia.

    Withdeence budgetstightening, affordability

Te fighter is now recognised and accepted

as the logical solution, capable o ulfilling

almost any nations need or a true

    multi-role fighter.

    With moderate operational and

maintenance costs that no other aircraf

even comes close to matching, Gripen

is unique and increasingly popular. In

    addition, its development programme

    will enable industrial cooperation and

    technology transer to each customer

countrys industry. Tat is why we

    call it the smart fighter.
