She was born at home in Albion, Michigan to Helen Hinks Tech and Emil Tech. Mr. Tech was a milking farmer and Mrs. Tech raised the seven children; five girls and two boys. Emil’s parents came from Germany through the Ellis Island in upper New York Bay, know as the gateway for twelve million immigrants. Shirley went to Albion schools and graduated from Olivet High School. She met Richard Gilmore, got married, and moved in with her parents when he left to be a paratrooper. She had their first son before Mr. Gilmore returned home. They had two more boys and two girls over the years. She has ten grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, and several great great-grandchildren. She is on Facebook to stay in contact with the out-of-state grandchildren. ISSUE 6 JUNE 2017 VOLUME 20

I was strolling down Cozy Corners on a sunny May morning and ran across the sweetest lady, Shirley Gilmore. She was born at home in Albion, Michigan to Helen Hinks Tech and Emil Tech. Mr. Tech was a milking farmer and Mrs. Tech raised the seven children; five girls and two boys. Emil’s parents came from Germany through the Ellis Island in upper New York Bay, know as the gateway for

twelve million immigrants.

Shirley went to Albion schools and graduated from Olivet High School. She met Richard Gilmore, got married, and moved in with her parents when he left to be a paratrooper. She had their first son before Mr. Gilmore returned home. They had two more boys and two girls over the years. She worked for the Xerox Company, division of University Microfilm, Incorporated. Shirley worked there for 27 years as a secretary to the Sales Managers and was in charge of the sales reps all over the United States. She

organized and ran their monthly meetings.

Shirley and her siblings got involved in a dulcimer club back in the day. Then they decided to start their own band and played from 1982 to 2015. They were called the Band Family Tradition. She played the Bass until she could no longer carry it around and then purchased an electric guitar. Her siblings played guitar, dulcimers, and the keyboard. Before she moved to the Jackson Friendly Home they would still get together on Thursdays and visit going to one of their homes to eat and visit. I am delighted to have been able to interview and converse with Shirley and to share her story. Thank you so much for being Resident of

the Month for June 2017.

June 2: We are off to our annual Nursing Home Olympics. This is a really fun all-day event. All the nursing homes in Jackson compete for the events. Our wonderful Dietary Department prepares a delicious lunch for us and competes in the table decorating competition. Please get your name in if this

sounds like fun to you.

June 5: Please come down and join in our Resident Council. All Residents are welcome to

attend and we very much would like to hear all ideas,

concerns and even compliments.

June 8: We will be going to cheer on the team at a Lansing Lugnuts game. We are going earlier in the year this time so hopefully the weather is a little kinder to us. Please

tell you Activity Assistant if you would like to go.

June 9: It’s time - time for our first summer picnic! So come on out for fun, friends, and wonderful grilled picnic food, with all the fixins! We offer half hour meditation times twice a month for everyone. Please come down and try it out! I absolutely believe that meditation is helpful for all of us in

our daily lives which sometimes can be stressful.

June 11: We will be going to a Sunday afternoon matinee of ‘Shrek the Musical’ at the Potter Center. The cast includes one of

our very own CarePartners and another’s daughter in it! We can’t wait to see it, so please see your Activity Assistant if

you would like to go. The seating is very limited.

June 13: This month we will be traveling to see our Oceans in our monthly travel log. So come see, hear and feel the

sand from our oceans.

June 16: It’s time for you to come out and see what David will be making at his cooking show. We will be holding it

outdoors and hopefully, he will grill us something fabulous.

June 18: Happy Father’s Day! In honor of our Fathers we will be hosting a dessert buffet from 1:30 till 3:00 pm. We will have some wonderful desserts so be sure to come on

down bring a friend or family and enjoy.

June 23: We will be going on my favorite all time outing. We will be going out to Spring Valley Trout Farm to do some fishing and some grilling and eating! It is a lot of fun and the Trout Farm is beautiful and peaceful (unless a lot of school kids are out there, but it is wonderful to watch them catch fish and to listen to their laughter). So either way - it is a great place to spend an afternoon. We will be having meditation in the early afternoon and after we are all relaxed we can come down and enjoy some popcorn and ice cream at our Ice

Cream Social. Come on down and join in.

June 26: Come on out and be a part of our water gun contest. This event is so much fun, because the moving

targets are our Activity Staff!

June 29: We will be holding our Ticket

Store in the LIP Room so come on down

with your tickets and see what we have.

Please inform your Activity Assistant if you are interested in attending one of these outings. All events are subject to

spontaneous change.

July 6: Out to Binder Park Zoo

July 11: Fun at FireKeepers Casino

July 21: Fishing trip to

Spring Valley Trout Farm

While we would love to take every Resident on every outing, it is logistically impossible to do so. Please know that the

Activities Team keeps track of everyone that attends an outing and tries to be as fair when assigning the outings. If there is an outing that you would like JCMCF to try out, please tell your Activity Assistant. We are always looking

for new places to go!

The flowers are blooming in the beautiful gardens at JCMCF! From flowering trees to our irises opening, the garden looks amazing. I thought back to the team at JCMCF that made our gardens so beautiful. I was told that each courtyard was decorated with flowers donated by CarePartners and the Jackson Master Gardener’s Club. The garden has matured into a breathtaking spot. Elders and their families and friends use it constantly from star gazing at midnight to cook outs and using the swings, they are much loved by all who live and work here. It is truly amazing what giving generously from the heart can do to make the world a better place.

Thank you to the Carepartners, Volunteers and friends of JCMCF that made our gardens the wonderful and relaxing recreational areas that they are. We are honored to have them and you be an integral part of our home.

At ‘David’s Cooking Show’ last month, he treated us to an incredible blueberry dish! We enjoyed this coffee cake very much and many people have asked for the recipe.

Enjoy!

Preheat oven to 400. Coat a 10” cast-iron skillet with nonstick spray. For the streusel, pulse: 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1/3 cup yellow cornmeal 6 T. unsalted butter, sliced 1/4 tsp. table salt Minced zest of 1 lemon Pulse the flour, brown sugar, cornmeal in a food processor to combine. Add sliced butter, salt, and zest; pulse until mixture comes together in large clumps. Transfer mixture to a bowl and freeze while making cornbread batter. For the cornbread, sift: 1 1/3 cups all-purpose flour 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar 1 cup yellow cornmeal 1 T baking powder 1 tsp. table salt Sift all ingredients. Whisk: 3/4 cup milk 2/3 cup buttermilk 4 eggs, beaten 1 stick unsalted butter, melted 1/4 cup vegetable oil 2 T. fresh lemon juice 1 tsp. vanilla extract Whisk all ingredients in a separate bowl. Stir into flour mixture to combine. Transfer batter to prepared skillet. Bake cornbread 10 minutes; remove from oven. Sprinkle: 1 1/2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries Sour cream or crème fraiche Sprinkle blueberries over batter; top with streusel. Return cornbread to oven and bake until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean, 25—30 minutes more. Let it cool for 15-20 minutes. Slice into wedges and serve warm with sour cream or crème fraiche. Per serving: 456 cal; 21g total fat (10g sat); 110mg chol; 428mg sodium; 65g carb; 2g fiber; 7g protein.
