Name of Lesson: Cardiovascular System Component - The Heart Grade Level: Adult Learners Subject: Anatomy and Physiology Prepared by: Dianne Johnson-Wojnicki Overview and Purpose: In this lesson, learners will be provided with information about the central component of the human cardiovascular system, the heart. The information will explain each of the hearts subcomponents; atrium, ventricle, value, artery, and vein. The material will specifically convey the cardiac cycle. The purpose of the lesson is to prepare the learner for the Anatomy and Physiology Section V Part 1 portion of the Certification and Registration Examination for Medical Assistants. Educational Standards ● The educational standards met in this lesson are in compliance with the two national

certifying agencies for the medical assisting profession recognized by the U.S. Department of Education: The American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA) and the Registry of Medical Assistants of the American Medical Technologist (RMA/AMT).

Objectives: ● The learner will be able to describe the primary function of the cardiovascular system.

● The learner will be able to list the three components of the cardiovascular system. ● The learner will be able to identify the components of the heart in terms of:

○ Chambers ○ Values ○ Vessels

● The learner will be able to explain the movement of blood through the heart. Information:

1. In preparation for the lesson the Cardiovascular System section of the text pages 87 through 91 should have been read.

2. The facilitator and learners will view the ITunes U, University of Warwick, Aspects of Anatomy; The Heart in order to gain the learners attention.

3. The basic structure and components of the heart will be identified using Figure 6.18 from the text.

4. Using the Heart Pro 3D Cross-section component the facilitator and learners will explore each of basic structures and components of the heart.

5. The cardiac cycle will be defined and described using Figure 6.19 from the text. 6. Using the Heart Pro 3D Blood Flow component the cardiac cycle will be examined and

investigated. Verification:

1. The learners will label the the components of the heart; Chambers, Values, Vessels using figure 6.18 from the text. (Appendix A)

2. The learners will label each step of the cardiac cycle using figure 6.19 from the text. (Appendix B)

Activity: The facilitator and learners will navigate through the heart exploring the various components in accordance with Figure 6.18 from the text using the Cross-section module of the Heart Pro 3D app. Attention will made to the notes regarding each components specific functions. The facilitator and the learners will travel through the heart tracking the actual flow of blood from de-oxygenated to oxygneated in accordance with figure 6.19 from the text using the Blood Flow module of the Heart Pro 3D. Attention will made to the notes regarding each components specific functions during the process of re-oxygenation. The learners may utilize the CardioGame app to reinforce their knowledge of the various components of the heart, specifically Match the Parts; Heart Chambers, Cardiac Valves, and Heart Cross-section. Notes In the event the learners are not equipped with an ipad the Pocket Heart by Pocket Anatomy: The Interactive Human Body, can be substituted using iphone or ipod touch. While this application is not as robust in terms of the graphic physical movement of blood through the heart, it does diagram and explain the movement satisfactorily.
