TIME FOR SRC VOTINGStudents from Years 8-11 have been busy gathering signatures to nominate for the 2019 SRC. Yesterday was the moment when the potential candidates for School Captain spoke in front of staff and their Year 11 cohort. My congratulations to those students who spoke with passion about their school and their leadership qualities. Not only were candidates asked to present one prepared speech, but also the most nerve racking: an impromptu speech. Our successful candidates for School Captain, Vice Captain and Senior Prefects for 2019 were posted on the school Facebook page and are pictured here:

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFASTThanks to the efforts of the P&C, Friday morning was another blockbuster event. I should like to thank the P&C for their hard work, once again, in organising the breakfast after the great success of the Mother’s Day Breakfast.

DEPUTY PRINCIPALS’

REPORT

SUBJECT SELECTIONSubject selections for Year 10 are currently being finalised. We are currently looking at numbers of students selecting each subject to determine which classes will run and which are not viable. An information evening for parents of Year 8 students was held on Monday 27 August in the auditorium. Subject selections for Year 8 into 9 will need to be submitted by clicking on the link emailed to students by Friday 31 August. The class lists for each subject in both of these years will be finalised early in Term 4. Changes may be made during Term 4 only if there is room in the class students wish to enter.

FINAL EXAMS FOR YEARS 7- 10Year 7 yearly exams will be held early in Term 4 - in Week 4 and 5. Exams for Years 8 will be conducted in weeks 6, Year 9 will be conducted in Week 4 and Year 10 yearly exams will be held in Week 5 and 6. All students should have begun to make study notes or revision notes as preparation for the exams. Students should make use of the extra free time they have during the school holidays to help prepare for these exams.

YEAR 11 IN TERMS 3 AND 4 The Year 11 final assessment period will begin in Week 9 of Term 3, from Monday 11 to Friday 22 September. The timetable for the exams is currently being designed and will be distributed to students when it is finalised. These tasks are the final assessments for the preliminary courses for all students in Year 11. The beginning of Term 4 is the start of the HSC courses for these students. Official assessment tasks for the HSC will begin in Term 4. Students need to complete a minimum of 10 units for the HSC. All Year 11 students are to enter their HSC subjects/units by returning the sheet issued to them in rollcall by Friday 7 September to the box in Ms Wilson’s office. This needs to include any units being picked up and any accelerated courses undertaken. Please be mindful of the eligibility policy. Changes to subjects will occur in Term 4, from the beginning of Week 3. Year 11 students who drive to school or are a passenger in a car driven by another student, must see Mrs Wilson in Term 4 to collect the correct permission letter. These forms must be completed, signed by parents and returned as soon as possible.

YEAR 12 HSC PREPARATIONYear 12 are preparing for the countdown to the HSC. Exams begin on Thursday 18 October and conclude on Friday 9 November. Students should take on board the valuable feedback provided from the recent Trial HSC examinations in order to make improvements. Students studying Languages, Visual Arts, Music and, Design and Technology have already completed or are about to complete the practical component of their HSC. Year 12 had a meeting on Monday 27 August about the final days of school, the last day (breakfast, assembly, luncheon), the HSC days, misadventure, signing out and requirements for a safe conclusion to their school life. A letter has also been posted home. Further details about the Graduation luncheon will be provided in a separate note.Diane Wilson Kirk GrinhamDeputy Principal Deputy Principal

WELLBEING REPORT

OUTGOING YEAR 12 ADVISERSAs the Year 12 Class of 2018 completes their final weeks of school at Tech, it is important that we recognise and congratulate their Year Advisers over the past six years (Leah Farr - Years 7-9 and Ellen Campbell - Years 10-12) on their commitment to the academic and personal development of these students, most of whom arrived here way back in 2013. On behalf of the school community – the many students, staff and parents who have been put at ease with the knowledge that their sons have been working to always give their personal best, I would like to thank you, Leah and Ellen, for your hard work and dedication to the wellbeing of these students.

JUNIOR TRANSITION COORDINATOR/YEAR ADVISERSAt the end of this year, Susan Faulder will be stepping down as Junior Transition Coordinator to focus on other professional goals within her faculty area and Ellen Campbell will resume the role as Junior Transitional Coordinator at Tech. Susan Faulder has coordinated programs such as Year 7 Orientation Day, the Year 7 Transition days, Peer Support and High Resolves for the past three years and I would like to personally thank her for her efforts in coordinating these whole school programs. I would like to welcome Andy Cachia to the Wellbeing Team as he takes on the role as Year 7 Adviser in 2019. Andy Cachia’s first official duties as Year Adviser will kick off next term when Year 6 students and their parents arrive for orientation day in Term 4.On behalf of Year 8 parents and students I would also like to acknowledge and thank Pam Stergiou for her role in relieving as Year 8 Adviser whilst Nin Eath was filling in as Head Teacher HSIE for part of Term 3. Pam Stergiou has been a valued member of the Wellbeing Team during this time and contributed some great ideas during our Wellbeing Team meetings.

WELLBEING STUDENT SURVEYIn the first few weeks of Term 3, Year 7-12 students completed a short online Wellbeing Assembly survey where they were asked to evaluate the current Wellbeing Assembly topics they were provided with in Terms 1 and 2 in 2018. In particular, we asked the students to make comments on which topics and presenters they found useful for them personally and topics they would like to see in future assemblies from 2019. As my team now begins to process this data, we are equally interested in the experiences of the teachers who are often asked to present Wellbeing topics to their rollcall classes. A survey will be issued to the staff later this term to help my team of Year Advisers evaluate current Wellbeing practises and begin to consider improvements to what we already do here at Tech in our support of every student.A summative report of the survey’s findings will feature in the next edition of Tech Talk.

WELLBEING ASSEMBLIES TERM 3 Wellbeing Assemblies have continued to play an important part in the development of effective wellbeing and engagement strategies for all of the students at Tech. Year 7: With Peer Support now officially over for Year 7, their new program of wellbeing assemblies has already seen them take part in lessons aimed at improving their organisation and planning. They were also in the audience for Brainstorm Production’s play – Verbal Combat – which addressed issues on cyberbullying caused from misuse of technology on social networks. Year 7’s most recent assembly was all about overcoming adversity teaching the students skills in how to bounce back from setbacks.Year 8 have been working through the ELES online study skills handbook learning time management strategies and developing an understanding about the need for learning and how it can be applied to life after school. Year 8 have also been given important information about the exciting range of electives available in Years 9 and 10 as well as practical tips towards choosing subjects that they want, based primarily on their own interest areas and strengths. The school also welcomed back motivational guest speaker Jonathan Beninca to talk to our Year 8 students about his personal journey of losing multiple limbs after being run over by a train at the age of 19 after taking a short cut across the train tracks. His presentation spoke to the boys about relevant issues such as being able to bounce back from adversity, looking out for your mates and recognising the dangers associated with risk taking behaviour.Year 9 had a wellbeing assembly on conflict resolution and were given guidance around steps they can take to resolve conflict for themselves whilst still being mindful of others. They spent valuable time sharing past experiences and reflecting on strategies that work. Additionally, all boys were issued with the relevant information for their upcoming camp in October and are now finalising their accommodation and activity groups. The students together with Ms Bilton have finalised the activities and can now eagerly anticipate the sheer joy coming their year adviser’s way when she enters ‘Lost Island’ which is a commando challenge full of mud.Year 10 have been looking at specific study skills

that will become a key feature for them as the year progresses and as they enter the senior school too. Time management and note taking are often skills that are either taken for granted or remain ‘foreign objects’ for some students. Exposing them to practical skills, strategies and resources that they can apply or even modify for their own purposes and style has been an important element in a recent session. They were also in the audience for Brainstorm Production’s new play – Flipside – which challenges student’s ethics and behaviour online. Year 11: In less than 12 months from now, the current cohort of Year 11 students will have just completed their Trial HSC exams – a stressful time for all. They have been approaching the topic of stress management from a holistic viewpoint that acknowledges that there are many ways in which stress can be alleviated. Stress is a good thing – crucial for peak performance – but if the balance is wrong, it can be counterproductive. Getting the mix right for our students now is a big step in the right direction come 2019. Year 11 also heard from guest presenter Tom Reynolds, from the Independent Drug Education of Australia, who talked to the students about the risks and laws associated with alcohol and illicit drug usage in Australia. Students also learnt valuable first aid skills as part of the presentation.Year 12: The most recent assembly for Year 12 provided them with important information should they be considering applying for the Educational Access Scheme (EAS). The scheme is operated by UAC and is designed to provide special consideration to university aspirants who can demonstrate that they have experienced long-term educational disadvantage (financial, medical, personal etc) for a period of six months or more. All students considering an application and who seek endorsement from a recognised school staff member must ensure that all the relevant paperwork is finalised and provided to staff no later than Friday 14 September to allow enough time to write and return Educational Impact Statements (EIS) to students so they can scan and upload documentation when making an application online. A copy of the presentation and all accompanying EAS literature can be found at Moodle B - > Wellbeing - > Educational Access Scheme or visit the EAS website. The members of the wellbeing team take great care producing these vital resources and events.

A lot of time and energy goes into these and we appreciate the support shown by other teaching staff and the cooperation and input from the students.

YEARLY EXAMSIt is that time of the Year when students will soon be sitting for their final round of exams. This can also be a stressful and anxious time of the year for some of our students. REACH OUT have just recently uploaded some new resources on developing coping skills for stress, that parents and students can access online. The Schools A-Z run by the Department of Education also offers advice to parents and students on how to deal with the stresses that come from sitting exams and studying. Further resources can also been found on Andrew Fuller’s website outlining useful tips on preparing for tests. CAREERS REPORT

Year 12 students have just finished their trial exams and should be in the process of filling in their UAC applications. The deadline for this is the 28th September. You must fill in your five preferences and to pay the $70 administration fee prior to this deadline. You can ‘Check and Change’ as many times as you like after this date at no extra cost. I am available to help with the UAC process – just pop down to the Careers Cottage at any time.I have met with Year 11 and spoken about the courses that have additional entry requirements. This might be the UMAT, LAT or a portfolio. The importance of adding extracurricular activities to their schedule was stressed, especially if they are considering applying for a cadetship or scholarship next year. Year 11 also completed a Career Survey which will lead to a more targeted approach to receiving information. A compulsory interview with the Careers Adviser will take place in Term 4 for all Year 11 students. I am available before school, recess and lunchtime for any information they require.Year 10 students need to begin the process of finding places for work experience. This is only compulsory for the Band Camp participants but open to other Year 10 students who would like to try something different. We will be flexible with the timing for this placement. Please see me for the work experience paperwork.Year 9 have just completed their first careers lesson for this year. We looked at various websites and identified the information that can be found on them for career navigation. They participated in a simple career quiz that identified various occupations that they might be interested in. The same website gives up to date information about the job prospects of all occupations. Next term we will begin work on a resume that should be kept up to date with achievements, work experience and extracurricular activities, as it will be a good basis for scholarship and cadetship applications in the latter years of high school.Year 7 and 8 careers lessons have been planned and will occur in the near future. These will be based around understanding the world of work, self-awareness and goal setting.

YEAR 12 ADVISERREPORT

Letters have been given to all Year 12 students and also mailed over the past few days. The first letter which was given to the students, provided a schedule for students for their last day, including the Breakfast Barbecue provided by teachers, the Graduation Assembly, and the lunch at Doltone House. Invitations were then mailed to all families inviting all to the Year 12 Graduation Lunch which will be held at Doltone House, Sylvania Waters, on Friday 28 September 2018. The lunch will take place after the Year 12 Graduation Assembly and students will travel by bus to the venue. It is a most beautiful and moving occasion as we all celebrate and eat lunch together at Doltone House, marking the end of school for our fine Year 12 students. There will be a PowerPoint presentation and a video showing the students’ memories of their time at Tech, and there will be tears as students take in the moment of their final day of formal schooling. If you could please pay the cost of the lunch as soon as possible. All students should be attending the lunch and we would love families and friends to join us.Year 12 had a meeting addressed by Ms Wilson on their first day back at school after the Trials. At the meeting Ms Wilson outlined the school’s expectations of their conduct and students are urged to redouble their efforts to study in the remaining time up to their HSC exams. A letter has also been mailed outlining this information. In the meantime, lessons carry on as usual and students are joining in some pleasant activities, including a friendly football competition at lunchtimes. The Careers Adviser is also putting on some lunchtime talks with invited speakers, and students are urged to go to see Jerry Mouzakis (Careers Adviser) to help them with careers advice and university choices. Students who wish to apply for scholarships are asked to do so in plenty of time before the scholarship application deadlines. They should email Mr Mouzakis, Mr Grinham, and their Year Adviser with a copy of their application for proof-reading and fine-tuning, and to allow the school time to provide appropriate support for their scholarship bid. Some students may experience frustration and disappointment as they receive their marks from their Trial exams: this is understandable as students who have worked very hard preparing for their Trials may feel they deserve greater rewards for their efforts. I urge parents to contact the school and avail themselves of the support for their sons. All subject teachers, the Learning and Support Teachers, the School Counsellors, Deputy Principals, Year Adviser, Head Teacher Wellbeing, and the Careers Adviser are on your team and always ready to support your sons with their wellbeing and study needs. LEARNING LABS (YEARS 7-10) 3 and 4 October 2018Learning Labs is an enrichment program for high achieving students presented by the Outreach and Pathways Unit at the University of Wollongong. Due to the popularity of the program with students in Western and South-Western Sydney, we have been working to bring Learning Labs to our Liverpool Campus. Workshops run over one or two days and are a great opportunity for students to explore their area of interest. There will be diverse and innovative workshops presented by academics and teachers with specialist training or a specific interest in gifted education. Each workshop will be pitched at two years above their grade level. For example, workshops for students in Years 7 and 8 during 2018 will be pitched at a flexible Year 9 and 10 level. In the past the workshops have been fully booked so fill out the application form as soon as possible. Please note that only one workshop can be attended over the two days, so students must choose wisely. Please only select workshops that your child is excited to attend.

For more detailed workshop descriptions, how to apply,

workshop fees and the online application form, please go

to:https://www.uow.info/learninglabs

If you do not have access to a computer please contact the Outreach and Pathways office

on (02) 4221 5557 or via email at [email protected] so a hard copy of the program can

be posted to you.

Applications close on 21 August 2018.

All Parents Welcome

It always amazes me how fast a year goes. Spring is already here and¬ the boys at Tech are deep into Term 3.

FATHER’S DAY BREAKFASTAfter the highly successful Mother’s Day Morning Tea earlier this year, the dad’s got their chance to celebrate their day at Sydney Tech with their son(s) at the Father’s Day Breakfast held on Friday 31 August. It was a great turn out and it’s always good to be able to meet and talk to other parents of students at the school to share “war” stories about each other’s kids.

This year was the first year we have held the Mother’s Day Morning Tea and the Father’s Day Breakfast. The P&C main focus for this year was to improve the communication between the School, P&C and its community as well as forming a closer bond with the parents’ group to strengthen the community. I thank all the parents in supporting these two events and I hope both the Mother’s Day and Father’s Day events will continue in future years to come.

One last thing, even with the great turn out for the Father’s Day Breakfast, it was noticeably smaller than the Mother’s Day Morning Tea. I’ll put my battle cry out now for all the Dads to make sure they attend next year’s Father’s Day breakfast to make sure we beat the huge attendance at the Mother’s Day Breakfast.

IMPORTANT HEALTH INFORMATION

A student in our school is currently receiving treatment which results in a lowered immune system. This means that the student is more prone to getting ill from infections. As the student is not contagious but has a chronic illness, it is important that he participates actively in the day to day school program without any major limitations. A major concern is that if this student develops measles, chicken pox, whooping cough or influenza, he could become seriously ill. It is important that we prevent this situation from occuring. If your child has or may have measles or chicken pox, it is important that you:1. Do not send them to school2. Notify the School Principal as soon as possible.3. Take them to your GP or medical centre to confirm

diagnosis if possible.

BUILDING AND LIBRARY FUND

Building FundSydney Technical High School relocated from the city to the current site in Bexley and the school opened in 1953. The building is very solid, but not very flexible and of course aspects of the school require constant upgrades. The financial support of our parent and alumni community is critical in renovating school facilities through support of our Building Fund. Every donation to the fund over $2 is tax deductible. The senior boys toilet upgrade has been completed. In the recent past, the Building fund has renovated areas such as the toilets and showers in the Auditorium which are often used by parents and guests at the school. As well, the school renovated the Common Room, a space used for P&C meetings and our Parent Partnership Program. The Building Fund has also funded our TV message screens around the school.

Can I urge you, on behalf of our school community, to consider contributing generously to this very worthwhile fund, as we all benefit, students, parents and teachers towards ensuring that our students learn in an environment which is fit for our purpose: OPTIMUM LEARNING!Payments can be made:• on line via the school website - Parent Online

Payment (POP)• at the school office with cash, cheque or credit

card• by phone using credit cardOffice hours for payments are 8.15am - 1.45pm

Library FundWant to be ‘rich and famous’? Then make it a rule to read daily. Famous and very rich people like financier Warren Buffet, and Bill Gates read daily. A number of our students are avid readers and the 7-10 English reading program has given many students a great appetite for good books. Our Library Fund gives parents and alumni the opportunity to donate to the Library. Donations over $2 are tax deductible. We are grateful for any contibution. The fund recently enabled us to renovate the whole area to make it modern, user friendly and a place to hang out. Open every day at 8am, the Library Fund lets the school keep interesting, thought provoking and modern books available for our students. The READ program has started. We all read a REAL book four times a week for 20 minutes.

Could I urge all parents to contribute generously to the Library Fund, so that we can keep up to date with the sorts of novels and series that your son enjoys, and put them on the path to becoming lifelong readers.Payments can be made:• on line via the school website - Parent Online

screensThere will be no disruption to the online payment portal. You can make all of your school payments through our website www.sths.nsw.edu.au - there is an 'Online Payment' option in the top right corner. INFORMATION NOTICE

Background

All Education Ministers from Commonwealth, state and territory governments endorsed the implementation of a Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD) in all Australian schools (government, independent and Catholic).

The nationally consistent approach to data collection provides all Australian schools, education authorities and the community with a clear picture of the number of students receiving adjustments because of disability in schools, and the adjustments they are provided to enable them to participate in education on the same basis as other students.

Authority for the national data collection

The Australian Education Regulation 2013 requires the operators of all government and

non-government schools that receive Australian Government funding (approved authorities) to provide information to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training

(the Department) for the purposes of the national data collection.

The Australian Education Regulation 2013 (www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2016C00958) is on the Federal Register of Legislation website.

The information that approved authorities must give to the Department is set out at section 58A of the Australian Education Regulation. This includes, in relation to each student with a disability at a school operated by the approved authority:

• the student’s year of schooling

• the student’s category of disability (physical, cognitive, sensory or social/emotional)

• the student’s level of adjustment (support provided within quality differentiated teaching practice, supplementary, substantial or extensive adjustment).

Other details about the information to be collected, and the format in which the information is to be provided to the Department, are contained in guidelines approved by the Education Council (the committee of the Council of Australian Governments comprising the Commonwealth and state and territory Ministers responsible for education). Guidelines for the national data collection (www.education.gov.au/node/50091) are available on the Department’s website.

The information will not explicitly identify individual students (subsection 58A(3) of the Regulation); no information that could reasonably enable the Department to identify individual students will be provided by approved authorities to the Department .

Collection, use and disclosure of information from the national data collection

The information collected by schools for the purposes of the 2018 national data collection will ultimately be provided to the Department. In some cases, this will involve the school passing the information directly to the Department, and in other cases the school will provide the information to its state or territory government agency (or other relevant body) in the first instance, depending on the school’s particular arrangements. In such circumstances, that state or territory government agency, or other relevant body, will then provide the information to the Department.

The Department, on behalf of the Joint Working Group, will use information from the national data collection for the purposes of preparing reports for and briefing the Australian Education Senior Officials Committee and the Education Council in relation to the national data collection.

When providing these reports or briefing material, the Department will ensure that the information remains de-identified.

In December 2016, the Education Council released the report Improving educational outcomes: Emergent data on students with disability in Australian schools. The report provides high-level data from the 2015 national data collection and was the first public release of data from the national collection.

This report was followed in May 2017 by the release of the report 2016 emergent data on students in Australian schools receiving adjustments for disability, which contains data from the 2016 national data collection.

These reports are published on the Reports and Publications page of the Education Council website (www.educationcouncil.edu.au/EC-Reports-and-Publications.aspx).

Information from the national data collection will also be used for policy development undertaken by the Department, including informing funding considerations relating to students with disability, and other policy development as agreed by the Education Council.

From 2018, the Commonwealth’s student with disability funding loading for schools is based on the national data collection.

The document Fairer funding for students with disability (www.docs.education.gov.au/node/43566), on the Department’s website, provides more information.

Contact

For further information about the collection, use or disclosure of information for the national data collection, please contact: [email protected].

Any questions parents/carers or schools have about the completion of the 2018 national data collection may be directed to:

• the relevant education authority contact listed in the Contacts page of the Guidelines (docs.education.gov.au/node/50091) on the Department’s website or

• the Contacts page of the national professional learning website (www.schooldisabilitydatapl.edu.au/other-pages/contact-us) developed by Education Services Australia.
