Lesson: Geography of Egypt
VA SOLs:
2.4: The student will develop map skills by a) locating Egypt on world maps
2.5: The student will develop map skills by b) locating the Nile River
Learning Objectives
Students will:
Locate Egypt on map on the continent of Africa
Compare map of Ancient Egypt to modern Egypt
Locate the Nile River, Cairo, Giza, the Pyramids, Sahara Desert, Red Sea, Mediterranean Sea
Identify the climate and land of Egypt
Materials and Advanced Preparation
Google Earth using smartboard
Overhead/smartboard map of Ancient Egypt - Egypt poster set, Melissa Matusevich
Handout of ancient Egypt map for students to label and keep in their Egypt folder
Crayons, markers
Teaching and Learning Sequence
Introduction/Anticipatory Set
Tell children that today they are going to learn about where Egypt is located and what the
climate and land is like
-Ask children what climate means
Show children the beginning Google Earth Image using smart-board
-Students are familiar with Google Earth from previous study

-Remind students that Google Earth lets us navigate anywhere around the earth and
shows real pictures that have been taken from space-satellite images.
Lesson Development
Locate North America as a starting point. Show Richmond, VA.
Move from Richmond, VA to modern day Egypt on Google Earth
-Ask students what continent Egypt is in
-Ask students how long they think it would take to get there
- calculate using Google Earth navigation/directions
Zoom in so that students can see Egypt and get a good picture of the shape, show boarders
-Ask students what they see
- Talk about the Nile River, show on Google Earth
-Talk about the colors of the map
- what is the blue
- what do they think the brown represents all, show the Sahara Desert
-what kind of land do they think Egypt is
Next using Google Earth on smart-board:
-locate the Nile River, Sahara Desert, Giza, Cairo, Pyramids, Sphinx, Red Sea,
Mediterranean Sea
Discuss the climate and land
-Ask students what they think the climate is like
-Dene that the weather is hot and dry - Desert
Closure

Pass out the map of ancient Egypt
-Have students label and color the map
-Nile River, Cairo, Giza, the Pyramids, the Sahara, the Mediterranean Sea, and the
Red Sea.
-Students may refer to the projected may of Egypt
Have students write what they learned today on their KWL chart
Instruct students to put the nished map into their folder
Assessment
Formative
Assess students participation in the discussion about the geography of Egypt
- do the contribute to the discussion
Summative
Check each students map to see that they have correctly identied the Nile River, Cairo, Giza,
the Pyramids, the Sahara, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Red Sea.
