    Clay VocabularyClay Vocabulary

    States of Clay

    Clay- a moist earth of decomposed rock; used in products such as pottery,bricks, tiles, and sculpture

    Leather hard- unfired clay that isnt quite dry, yet firm enough to carve orburnish

    Greenware/ Bone Dry- unfired clay that is free of water and ready to fire; clayin its most fragile state

    (Apply underglaze at this stage)

    Firing- making clay products permanent through baking at hightemperatures in a kiln

    Bisque- clay that has been fired once

    (Apply overglaze at this stage)

    Ceramic-clay products that have been fired for permanence

    Types of Clay

    Earthenware- low-fire pottery, usually red or tan, that hasbeen fired to below 2,000 degrees F

    Stoneware- (gray/white)- usually high fired above 2000degrees F

    Porcelain- White, high talc content, can be very strongAND very thin

    Wedging- kneading moist clay to eliminate air bubblesand produce a uniform texture

    + Coil- snake- like piece of clay, process for building

    + Slab- clay evenly rolled and formed by draping orjoining

    (pancake-like piece)

    Slip- Very wet clay used as a glue toattach 2 pieces of clay

    Scoring- making marks on the edges of 2pieces before joining with slip

    Weld- successfully joining 2 pieces

    Glazing

    Underglaze- colors that can be painted on

    greenware that will show through a clear glaze

    Overglaze- colors that can be painted onbisqueware which result in a shiny glass-like

    surface after firing
