His mother says, “My son

Kieron loves painting because

he lives in a flat and he doesn’t

On Saturday the carnival opens with

traditional Caribbean music and dancing.

Sunday is Kids’ Day and children dress up

in different costumes and parade through

the streets. There is a competition and the

children with the best costumes win a prize!

On Monday there is the main parade.

Hundreds of people dress up in brightly

coloured costumes and parade along the

streets of Notting Hill. Red, yellow, blue,

green … there is every colour you can

possibly imagine – and more!

It began in 1966 as a celebration of Caribbean music and culture and it is now the biggest street carnival in Europe. Every August, millions of visitors come to see the Notting Hill Carnival in London, which lasts for three days!

In Britain

Remember, remember the fifth of November … it’s Guy Fawkes’ Night in Britain!

In 1605, thirteen men planned to blow

up the Houses of Parliament in London

because they wanted to kill the King of

England. But the plan failed when Guy

Fawkes, one of the 13 men, was caught

on 5th November that year. The English

people were very happy that their

king was safe and they celebrated by

lighting bonfires (small fires made with

wood and sticks) around London. Now,

every year, on 5th November, British

people celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Night.

Guy Fawkes’ Night

Traditions

Can you learn the rhyme too?

On 5th November, all around the country,

people meet to watch amazing firework

displays and they see the bonfire burn. They

cook potatoes and sausages on the bonfire

and eat a traditional dessert called Parkin cake.

Children also learn the Guy Fawkes’ nursery

rhyme which goes like this:

“Remember, remember the fifth of November

Gunpowder, treason and plot.

I see no reason why gunpowder, treason

Should ever be forgot”
