City of Chicago continue to move at a very slow pace. We are still awaiting key information from the City.

The parties met in the first week of August and continued to make slow progress on non-economic issues. The City and Local 700 have agreed to three more bargaining dates in the next few weeks.

The COUPE met with the City on Thursday, Aug. 10, but the City was not prepared to give an economic proposal. They did give a presentation on health care and the two parties worked through some non-eco-nomic proposals. The COUPE met with the City again on Aug. 16 and also met independently on Aug. 17. Nothing was agreed upon after those meetings.

While the current contract officially expired on Friday, June 30, the City and COUPE entered into another extension agreement. The same terms and conditions will continue for all employees during the extension.

Benevolent Fund T-Shirts

Teamsters Local 700 Political Director Greg Ortiz visited Washington, D.C. in June for the annual Teamsters Political Director’s Conference. Between sessions, Greg and other Teamster leaders had the chance to meet with many elected officials, including Senator Tammy Duckworth, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and Congressmen Raja Krishnamoorthi, Brad Schneider, Bill Foster and Mike Quigley. Greg also met with Senator Dick Durbin’s staff.

Topics that Greg discussed included the affects of Right to Work on public sector employees and how to protect our collective bargaining rights. He also talked about repealing the 40% Cadillac Tax and how we can solve the pension crisis in America. Senator Duckworth also shared a photo from the meeting on her Facebook page and said “Today, I had a good discussion with Illinois Teamsters members about strengthening protections for American workers.”

City Members Show Their Support to Honor Midway MTD’s Late SonTeamsters Local 700, along with Illinois Harley Davidson and Roxi’s Gaming Parlor, hosted a motorcycle run on Sunday, Aug. 6 to benefit the Teamsters Local 700 Benevolent Fund in honor of a member’s late son. Local 700 partnered with Roxi’s to honor the life of Anthony Sanfratello, who tragically lost his life in a car accident last year. Anthony’s father, Tim Sanfratello, is an owner of the gaming parlor and an MTD at Midway. So far, the event has raised more than $1,000 for the fund.

The ride kicked off at Illinois Harley in Countryside, Ill., on Sunday morning and welcomed both new and seasoned riders and their passengers. A special prayer was given by a minister to bless all of the riders before they left on their journey. Starting the ride on historic Route 66, riders made the 48-mile trip to Roxi’s Gaming Parlor in Minooka, Ill. where they enjoyed a barbeque, beverages, music and games.
